The Boston Fire

On July 22, 1975, Stanley J. Forman was working in the newsroom of the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!” Forman rushed to the scene, where multiple fire crews were battling an intense blaze. There was a distress call for a ladder team to the rear of the building to help a stranded woman and child. Forman followed.

Climbing atop the fire truck for a better view, Forman instinctively began covering the events before him. As firemen on the scene focused on their work, Forman’s attention was directed to a young woman, Diana Bryant, and a very young girl, Tiare Jones. Both were seeking help from fireman, Bob O’Neil, located on the roof directly above them. O’Neil moved to the fire escape and motioned for the truck’s ladder to be brought to them. The flames came closer and closer to the fire escape as Forman continued to shoot.

Then, at the very instant the ladder reached the trio, the fire escape gave way. O’Neil clung to the ladder, but Bryant and Jones fell helplessly. Forman snapped a last picture before turning away, knowing the bodies were falling to the ground. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, O’Neil knew he had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both. Forman’s work captured a vivid scene where mere seconds had meant life or death.

Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

What the hell was that idiot doing climbing on a fire truck?!

  2. Ebay hot items Says:

Very interesting site, nice design, greetings

  3. Crouton. Says:

Didn’t you read the text closely? The photographer was trying to get a better view. It wasn’t his fault that the fire escape gave off, he wasn’t there with the trio himself. He was just taking pictures. Because that’s what he’s there for.

  4. Heartless Says:

This looks like Peter Pan stuff!!!!

  5. Norhan Says:

wow , im sorry but making fun of such a sad picture is pretty low.

  6. Janie Says:

    It’s worse than low.
Those idiots wished someone cared about them, so they do their best to try to make someone care by saying thoughtless things they feel will get someone’s attention. That’s pretty sad.
    They can’t hide their misery.

  7. Tor Says:

Its just like the picture of the guy jumping out of the trade center, they’re fake. Dummies pushed out of the building. It’s all a conspiracy orchestrated by the Nazi’s and Democrats.

  8. Carys Says:

I’m sorry, but no dummy can express the fear on that child’s face. Sometimes people do capture these horrific moments, and sometimes they are real. Conspiracy theorists need to realize that, yes, bad stuff does happen. And sometimes, these bad things are captured by the people around.

And those of you mocking this, even if it was a “conspiracy” as Tor says, that is very, very rude and uncalled for. Not to mention unnecessary.

  10. waddup Says:

that top kid is obviously tied to a big rubberband sex aid device, this scene was originally shot for the film, “Hot Brooklyn Nights”, it took seven takes….

  11. jerzy city boyz Says:

the new gymnastics competition for the olympics, pirouetting in space….

  12. koko Says:

its quite difficult to generate any enthusiasm over this photo, it lacks the visceral compellingness of most other material on this site, one looks and ones immediate response is, so what? Kokos not impressed.

  13. God Says:

That fire escape sure did pull a Buckner on them two

  14. mg Says:

I find it fascinating that these pictures are being used for targeted advertizing, for instance this one has a list of fire escapes, presumably more secure ones than that which failed in this photo…

  15. burp hole Says:

This photo began the short lived craze of “extreme breakdancing”

Look at sista bustin da moves…

  16. rocky Says:

These comment threads need to be moderated. This is a little ridiculous.

  17. obywatelGC Says:

    horrible situation, astonishing photo

  18. Jeri Says:

why didnt anyone help these poor children?

  19. Hector Says:

As a retired professional firefighter, I have seen more than my share of human tragedy. I risked my life on a daily basis for all, no matter what race or creed. It was a HUMAN life! Reading some of these posts, I may have thought about the rescue before risking my own life to save thier sorry hateful asses….

  20. Suka Says:

Tor, you are destined to lead a life remembered by no one, who can care for someone who cares so little for others? Heartless, you have chosen an appropriate name, and one day you will be on the receiving end of heartless actions. Waddup, you really need to get your head checked, your little fantasies that you freely display here are sick and twisted.
Hector, I fully agree with you that these posts should be moderated and those who have nothing good to say shall not be allowed to. Its because of people like them that our world is not safe or conflict-free. Its because of people like them that racism continues. Its because of people like them peace cannot be achieved.

  21. Christian Nation Says:

@suka..God will judge these sinners and they will burn in everlasting torments of hellfire and damnation with hot coals shoveled into their anuses. praise God the Almighty, merciful ruler of heavan and earth!! Praise his omnipotence! Beg at his feet you pervos as he kicks you into the bottomless pit of hell! Jesus will come and on that day he will triumphantly cut you into little pieces over and over.

  22. charley Says:

please people please, cant we just all work together in harmony to bring an end to these hopeless times?
Cant we all throw little children from the roof?

  23. Sara Says:

What I can’t figure out is how someone, obviously surviving on welfare, could afford a trampoline?

  24. Lisa Says:

This site has opened my eyes to the horrible people that share this world with me. Do you think you are funny Tor? Do you think you amuse anyone with your cold comments heartless?

    Nobody is laughing.

You are the absolute scum of humanity. I’m glad I believe in Karma. You will all get what is coming to you, you sick perverted low lives.

  25. Heartless Says:

    @Lisa
    I do.
    What’s wrong with that??
The world is such violent and painfull.
Be sad will not change the things….
so let’s be happy even the world been as it is!
We both could laugh of damned together!!!!
    You and I!

  26. Tor Says:

i apologize, i was wrong and my mother has sent me to my room
    signed Tor’s Mommy

  27. Hana Says:

real or not, it still saddens me

  28. Midas Wilder Says:

Such a horrifying and surreal b&w shot. It’s also quite artistic…despite the outcome.

  29. bailey Says:

This picture is so sad. I’ve been looking through a lot of these pictures, many of them very upsetting.

I can’t believe some of the comments I’ve been reading. I think it’s really sad how we still can’t accept each other. Comment #12, Tor, how can you say a human life isn’t worth it because of the color of someones skin? And the people making fun of this picture, how can you be so disrespectful, I bet you wouldn’t think it was all that funny if you saw a picture like that of someone you cared about and someone was so incredibly disrespectful.

& amen comment 32. I agree completely with Lisa.

I also STRONGLY agree with Rocky (comment #23)

  30. rabbit Says:

Let’s call the top girl boo and the bottom girl hoo.

Boo karate chops hoo in the face and roundhouse kicks her stomach. Hoo falls out the window and boo can help but kick hoo in the side of the head one more time not realizing they both have fallen out of the window. Boo gets her foot ready to boot hoo in the back and scare that ***** away

  31. Sica Says:

You all need to watch Penn and Teller’s Bullshit! They do an episode that explains how conspiracy theories are complete and total bullshit. You people who think these horrible things were just serious plots thought out by government officials. Well they’re not! They’re random and horrible events. These are not fake, they are real. All you conspiracy theorists need to take a moment to pull your heads out of your asses and realize that bad things do happen. Whether you like it or not.

  32. Sica Says:

Not that you’ll ever read this but rabbit you are a terrible person, you know that? How can you be so sick? You may think you’re funny but there is no comedy in the sick, twisted reality that you live in. I mean, you make Jack The Ripper seem normal. And that’s a feat for sure.
And to Christian Nation… I would love to see Jesus come back. That would be neat considering I doubt he even existed in the first place. And you can tell me I’m going to hell, but I don’t even believe that place exists. So explain to me how I can go somewhere that doesn’t exist.

  33. Mr Man Says:

First - most of these offensive posts are trolls. They’re just trying to see how much anger they can stir up. Ignore them and they’ll go away.

Second - I saw this on the front page of the Washington Post when I was in kollidge. It was a series of about 7 shots from a rapid film advance camera. They ran them in a diagonal down the entire front page. Absolutely stunning. I’ll never forget how awful I felt. I guess you could say it was one of the first steps toward taking an oath to ignore the mainstream news, which I did in the early 80’s and never went back. I feel so much better now.

  34. brianna Says:

how would you feel if ou were that little girl and u saw this picture ? but she lived for a reason…

  35. barbie Says:

WHAT HAPPENED TO THESE LITTLE CHILDREN, DOES ANYONE KNOW?

  36. Jem Says:

Hey Suka, I agree with you. these pictures cant explain what really happened.

  37. dottie Says:

this is like a little still life, I wonder if you can get it framed?

  38. Heartless Says:

    @ Barbie
Well we don’t need a crystal ball to know what happened,
Even looking like a vulture, they have no wings…
It’s not hard to figure out what’s happen when a child fall from the 08th floor with his head into the ground.
“I wish that I could fly
    Into the sky
    So very high” Lenny Kravtz

  39. Britainy Says:

Fake? FAKE?! Are you serious? Why would they throw dummies out a window and pretend it was people jumping from a fire? It doesn’t even make sense. The pictures of people jumping from the towers aren’t fake either, who the f*uck would take the time, in a burning building about to collapse, to throw dummies out a window? Please, your ignorance hurts my brain. I think I’m losing IQ reading these comments. These girls are real, the fire escape collapsed.

  40. barbie Says:

I HEARD THESE ARE FAKE THEY JUST USED DUMMIES!!

  41. lol Says:

someone call the waaaahmbulance, two smelly colored kids are about to die. we should care why?

  42. Nicole Says:

I saw a great documentary on this picture and what the photographer had to go through in order to take.. its sad the mother ended up dying, but in the end the picture made the city practice better fire safety.

  43. poopoo Says:

    I poopoo!

  44. Poopoo Says:

    will they bounce?

  45. Marlboro Man Says:

reckon they started that there fire by sneaking one a their dads smokes…

  46. Axio Says:

There is something so bizarre and surreal about the photo that it definitely makes it hard to ingest the tragedy of the actual moment captured. Its an amazing image.

  47. Christian Nation Says:

so shall the nations be cast down!
