The Baby Hand
Some of us may be familiar with a picture called “The Baby Hand,” taken on Aug. 19, 1999, by photojournalist Michael Clancy for USA Today, which first published the picture. Clancy was assigned to document a spina bifida operation performed in utero on a 21-week unborn baby named Samuel Armas by Dr. Joseph Bruner, a surgeon at Nashville’s Vanderbuilt University Medical Center.
The picture and its story have been circulated on the internet so often that some question whether they are authentic. They are.
Clancy describes the famous picture this way: “Samuel thrusts his tiny hand out of the surgical opening of his mother’s uterus. As the doctor lifts his hand, Samuel reacts to the touch and squeezes the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shakes the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. At that moment, I took this ‘Fetal Hand Grasp’ photo.”
In a story he wrote about the incident, Clancy added,
“As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one’s hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, ‘What happened?’ ‘The child reached out,’ I said. ‘Oh. They do that all the time,’ she responded.”
Clancy said the experience changed him from pro-choice to pro-life.
Not only did USA Today run the photo, but so did a number of other media sources in the United States, Canada, Ireland, England, France, Norway, Singapore, and South America.
The photo generated controversy at Fox News, where then-talk show host Matt Drudge was prevented by the network from broadcasting the image on his show. That was in the early years of Fox, before the cable giant rose to the top by appealing to conservatives. Drudge–who is strongly pro-life–quit over the dispute in the fall of 1999. Not long afterward, Fox ran the picture, anyway, as part of a story on spina bifida.
Samuel was born on Dec. 2, 1999, weighing 5 pounds 11 ounces–four weeks premature. By all indications, he appeared healthy. Today, he’s a “chattering, brown-eyed 3½-year-old.”

If I was there at that moment I would have converted to pro-life as well!

The picture is real but the description is far off. A surgery like this would never be performed without anesthesia, thus rendering the mother and baby unconscious; not only will any doctor tell you that, but so would the surgeon who performed the surgery! try to be less gullible..

Maybe some more clarifying comments should be put in the entry for this photo? As Ella Trujillo said, the description is way off.
As Dr Bruner (the doctor whose hand is visible in the photo) states:
“The baby did not reach out, the baby was anaesthetized. The baby was not aware of what was going on.”
In another interview he has said, “Depending on your political point of view, this is either Samuel Armas reaching out of the uterus and touching the finger of a fellow human, or it’s me pulling his hand out of the uterus… which is what I did.”

i think children are disgusting, and everyon should get abortions.
September 7th, 2008 at 12:59 am
ashly,
just so you know… you spend likely close to 9 months in a uterus, and more years as a child. It’s funny how everyone who is in favor of abortions have BEEN BORN.
By your own definition, you’re disgusting
September 7th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Being a human is indeed a disgusting thing to do. We need, feed, bleed, and excrete. Libraries of medical data to explain the fragility of the human frame. Why? To propagate our suffering and complaining into endless generations? If I had my choice in the matter, I’d have put a stop to the whole thing. God can’t exist; he would have died from puking all over himself by now.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
There’s one tiny little thing that makes throws this entire story off and I’m amazed by how many people don’t notice it.
If you’re going to cut someone open, you’re going to give them anesthetic
if a pregnant mother is anesthetised, by way of basic biological processes, so is the baby
If you engage your brain for a moment, you too will realise this
this story is what a polite person would call impossible, i call it bullshit
If you still disagree with me, I have a friend in nigeria who would like your help

All i can say is, the arm of the baby in the first picture doesn’t seem to be an arm of a baby at all. Nothice that it looks like an arm of a teenager. No offense, but I’m a photo sceptic and I really look into tiny details of an unusual photo. ü
September 20th, 2008 at 11:02 am
If the mother was not under general anaesthesia but just had an epidural, the fetus would most certainly be “awake”…..don’t know if that’s the case here, just a thought….
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 am
iğrenç ötesi…
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
To ella trujillo, VMOS, and others:
Check your facts. Google ‘fetal blood brain barrier’. Assuming the mother was given GA, the anesthesia team would not use drugs that render the baby unconscious. Sedated maybe, but certainly not unconscious. The grasp reflex would remain intact as the photo clearly indicates.
As for people who think this was faked or photo-shopped, try not to be so small minded. Yes, it’s controversial, and it upsets the lefties, but it is well documented and it is not fake.
September 25th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
was this photoshopped?
September 25th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
shake hands pardner.
September 30th, 2008 at 2:50 am
I am very pro life but completely for pro choice. If it were illegal, it would be done for the desperate anyhow. Though I am puzzled how it could be the doctor grabbing the hand….that the baby was not grasping. You can cleary see his little fingers holding tight to the doctors. I was not aware that could happen when under anaesthesia. And as GB pointed out, almost all surgeries on pregnant women are with an epideral. How do you think a woman has a c section? They are rarely unconscious.

I worked with a MFM doc (high risk pregnancy doctor) when I was in med school and we assisted on a case where we monitored the mother and baby while a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon did open-heart surgery on the fetus (near term). Needless to say, it was an amazing case to see and any doubters of these pictures don’t know what they are talking about. A lot of amazing things like this go down everyday out of the view of the world.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
The mother and baby were definitely anaesthetised. Just check out the Snopes entry: http://www.snopes.com/photos/medical/thehand.asp

It’s like everyone is ignoring why the mother was opened up. This isn’t an abortion picture. Abortions are generally intended for younger, much less developed babies.
This baby was under operation, in utero, for a spine malformation. In this case they were probably both fully anesthetized, unless the doctor is a psychopath.
Typical example of Pro-Life propaganda at it’s worse.
October 28th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
No matter what–you can see that it is a baby–not just a blob of fetal tissue. And so if the baby is anesthetized, that means that the baby would feel pain–so to all those people that think you can have an abortion and you don’t think anyone suffers any pain–think again. I don’t think these ladies are put completely under–than that baby has pain–and there is that silent scream. Like the philosopher questioned–if a tree falls in a forrest, and nobody is around–does it really make a sound?1
October 30th, 2008 at 12:19 am
“you can see that it is a baby–not just a blob of fetal tissue. And so if the baby is anesthetized, that means that the baby would feel pain”
Of course it’s not a blob of fetal tissue, it’s past the five month mark! People do not have abortions at this point unless there is a health issue. Back up three months to when people actually choose to abort a pregnancy and you probably wouldn’t be able to recognize the fetus as human and it doesn’t even have a nervous system formed.

amazingly enough tor didnt blame america
November 2nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm
The first picture looks like something you’d see on the cover of a Twilight book.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
It is has also been noted, many times, that there are those who do not react to anesthesia the way they are supposed to. There are some, like myself, who have woken up mid-surgery and even moved a limb or finger at some point.
Don’t immediately brush off the picture as nonsense.
November 4th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Also, partial birth abortions are, regrettably, legal. They allow the body of the child to emerge, then they insert a tool inside to crush the back of the child’s head, killing him/her instantly. They use the excuse that the baby “has not been born” and therefore, not a human being. Abortions are legal anytime up to the partial birth abortion.
November 5th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
they should abort all these little *****

Last thing we need is more serious pro-censorship , nasty, mean, STUPID humans running around anyways.
This world is overpopulated with nasty excuses for life. Abortion = population control, which this planet needs greatly. If you haven’t noticed by now, our original mother, the mother earth, is not doing so well, and why do you think that is? Because humans are a virus slowly destroying it. The less the better. I don’t give a shit if you throw fully grown humans into ditches and shoot them in the ******* head. Start with pro-lifers and residents of places like Alabama and Mississippi though, making sure to get all fundamentalists of all religions.
November 11th, 2008 at 2:57 am
the “pro -life” thing is not in place since when a woman wants an abortion she will not wait until the baby is this developed, and will have the abbortion in the beginning of the pregnancy, when the baby is only a few cells and nothing more.
so its a low way to infouence people - in saying that if you have an abortion you kill a living person.
November 12th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
this is in the alley behind our local abortion shop, I love to wander there sometimes to see what the cats are getting into.
November 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Ok people, please LEARN TO READ! this photo has NOTHING TO DO WITH ABORTION! The baby is receiving an in-utero surgery to repair a birth defect called Spina Bifida; so the child is being saved from a lifetime in a wheelchair if not worse! I HAVE Spina Bifida, i assure you, its hard even if you have a “light” version like i have, i’ve met people MUCH worse off than i am.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

November 14th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
