In terms of of a changing the world this photo is minor league but It just had to be included because its a very famous and renowned photograph.
The shot is more commonly known as “Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park”
The photo shows a boy, with the left strap of his jumper awkwardly hanging off his shoulder, tensely holding his long, thin arms by his side. Clenched in his right hand is a toy grenade, and his left hand is held in a claw-like gesture; his facial expression is maniacal. Arbus captured this photograph by having the boy stand while moving around him, claiming she was trying to find the right angle. The boy became impatient and told her to “Take the picture already!” His expression conveys his exasperation and impatience with the whole endeavor, as the contact sheet for the shoot reveals. In other pictures, he is seen as a happy child.
The boy in the photograph is Colin Wood, son of tennis player Sidney Wood. An interview with Colin, with his recollections about Arbus taking this photograph, is presented in the BBC documentary “The Genius of Photography”.
An original print of the photograph sold for $408,000 April 2005, New York at Christie’s.
Sadly the Photographer Diane Arbus committed suicide in July 1971, at the age of 48 by ingesting a large quantity of barbiturates and then slashing her wrists. The reasons are unknown.

if you look at the contact print, clearly you could notice that he was a perfectly fine boy who just got frustrated about Arbus continuing to circle him and snap pictures.

Barbie, are you sick in the head? It’s a toy, for cryin’ out loud! Boys play with toy grenades, guns, knives, etc. since I can’t remember when. Back in 1986, when I was 6 y/o I had an exact replica of an AK47. I too have a picture of me, holding the AK47 and the family doxie, pretending to be a policeman.
It’s people like you who put a woman in my country against court for photographing her 1 y/o boy in the bathtub and then sharing the picture with her friends through her blog. Politics and porn can be seen anywhere, as long you think of politics and porn.

oh my god you mean a woman distributed sexaul pictures of her own baby? thats just sick, way worse than this picture. Must be in Sweden. Also, arent children sometimes accidentally shot by policemans because they have the fake gun that seems real? Thats really dangerous to give kids guns. You can easy see this little boy is afraid of that grenade, his body is tense and almost convulsive.

anyone can see the fear on this little boys face! actually Dottie the photographer who took this picture was well known for taking pictures of carnies and other deformed people, its believed she received some sort of psycho-sexual gratification from shocking fotos of sub-humans.

Has anyone actually looked at the contact print? Come on, people. Use your brain. The kid was fine, just annoyed, as any kid would be if you stopped from playing for a bit. Arbus treated humans as humans and celebrated their originality. This picture is suppose to trigger emotions, but clearly people are too naive to understand exactly the deeper meaning of this photograph and the message Arbus was trying to say.
