Starving boy and a missionary
World Press Photo of the Year: 1980 Mike Wells, United Kingdom. Karamoja district, Uganda, April 1980. Starving boy and a missionary. About the image Wells felt indignant that the same publication that sat on his picture for five months without publishing it, while people were dying, entered it into a competition. He was embarrassed to win as he never entered the competition himself, and was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death.

CHANGED as in it makes people see what is happening in the WORLD, they changed the world because everybody knows now, and can maybe do something about it. WORLD as in planet earth. So all the people have to see this pictures and take actions. If you are too stupid to see how bad the world is changing, go away from this site yourself, cause you’re the one who doesn’t do a thing. if you add comments like this, the name of this website is totally useless. The pictures then didn’t change a bit, they just made people more arrogant! Look at us, whe know how to do it, and they don’t.

The maker did want to publish it, to let the world see what was happining in Uganda. But when the publisher entered it to the world press photo competition, he wasn’t thrilled to win, cause he didn’t want to win over somebodies dead body. I think that is the spirit this website is about! Not about making funny comments that the arm looks like a monkey, or the parrents didn’t liked the the kid enough to feed it. It is to show what is happening in the world through beautifull pictures.

This image is incredibly sad and was meant to bring light to the conditions of CHILDREN earth wide.

Yes, this website is totally useless, other than to bait you. Although you don’t seem to realize it, the developer of the site and the photographers have already baited you far beyond my humble abilities.
Yes. I believe America is better than Europe. This is of course opinion, just as your expressions are simply your opinion.
We don’t need socialized health care, we already are required by law in our hospitals to treat anyone who comes in the door, regardless of financial status, this is a fact. We treat thousands of illegal aliens every day which financial burden is assumed by the taxpayer.I was recently treated with a $30,000 chemotherapy for free, donated by the company, who also donates millions more every year, much of which is sent to the disadvantaged nations pictured here. America donates more and contributes more in these areas than any other country on earth. Every major pharmaceutical company in the united sates has a program to provide medications to needy people for a reduced price, or no charge at all.
When cancer and aids are cured I have little doubt that it will be American ingenuity and discoveries which will enable that. In the meantime, regarding aids, we send people all over the continent of Africa to encourage use of condoms, increase awareness of precautions, and build hospitals to treat the victims. We do more of that also than any other nation on earth, not only with dollars, but with man hours donated by doctors and other volunteers. Meanwhile, African governments actually manipulate their own citizens callously with such rumors ( and more than rumors, actual press releases and speeches by cabinet ministers) that condoms are infected with aids and not to use them…. Hows that for caring? What has your country of origin done about these problems? Probably nothing.
We donate food to almost every third world nation extant. Generations of people in these countries have lived on our largesse from the milk they drank as babies to the bread they eat as adults, while the rest of the world seems content to let them starve. We also inoculate them against diseases.
So, making a change? We probably shouldn’t, as a change would mean CEASING to do these things, and no other country on earth, nor coalition of countries, will pick up the slack. That’s a fact honey.
As for the verbiage on this site, both mine consisting of sarcasm and crass humor, and yours of caring and indignation, neither will make a change my dear, neither will accomplish any damn thing but amusing ourselves. The difference being of course that I provide the greater service, by providing a visible target for you to attack and feel better about yourself thereby. Don’t thank me, my work is its own reward.
As for sentence structure or length, a sentence can go on for as long as desired, the only requirement I expect of it is that it can be understood, and the judgment of one who’s grasp of English doesn’t include spelling or proper punctuation certainly wont impress me.
As for adding a REAL comment about these pictures, each of my comments has been real, and far more real than your phony and ill considered admiration of them. Beautiful you call them, no my dear they are ugly and disgusting and horrible and have no beauty whatsoever, nor are they intended to.
In summary, continue to comment as you like, I will do the same, and if you reconsider the **** sucking, let me know, I have a sixth sense that tells me you’re a practiced and competent little ***** in that area at least.

@ two tone: the things you list are great. That are good things to do, and I think a lot of that thinks did really help. But did you annything about it? Or is it just your governement? Did you went over there and helped the kids? They you brought them your condensed milk? And, America did a lot of things wich aren’t really good. Yes you have a whole lot of good stuff over there, but a whole lot of crappie people aswell.
And another thing, America is the land with the most loans. If al the other countries in the world want there money back, America is broke. And that is not because all there help to other countries, but because of oil, guns an other investments. So if you look at the loans, America is a third world country.
I called the picture beautifull because it shows what is going on. It shows the missionary who is there to help, it shows the kid who is too weak to be saved but still the missionary tries to help, it has a good composition, you can also see the legs of an other kid, the shadows on the ground, and a little part of the orange sleeve of the kid, wich is really a point that caches the eye. And it is beautifull because of the story.
As for my spelling or proper punctuation, English is not my mother language. At least I know more than one language, maybe not tottaly fluence, but i bet it is better than your French, German, Check, Dutch or what so ever.

When I see pictures like this I feel heart broken because there are children and people ALL OVER THE WORLD. including in the USA have any of ever walked the streets of a city in the US and saw the homeless people. I’ve never assumed or generalized, i just reacted on all the comments cause the most of the people here are so proud of america, so it is easy to see the most people here are from america, and the most people here are making the cruel comments, so ad A to B. I’ve never said annything about history, or historical leaders. So if you are so eager to know, I’m dutch. Yes from the country that allowes weed and prostitues, wich houses the european court, and more bikes than people. If you go more than 100 years back, yes the Netherlands did a whole lot of cruel stuff, as in Indonesia. Wow. I can not believe that humanity spends so much time in useless debate and idle bickering. Perhaps we can use this energy to see the reality behind the picture and change the world by changing our thoughts. Then perhaps we can eventually change our actions and create a better world. The focus is the picture and how we can create change for a better world. Excuse me, but this argument against Americans and Europeans is pointless. I long for a day when we will all accept each other. I think people should really reflect on this picture and try to make the world a nicer place. This picture shouldn’t cause people to argue, that’s really not what it’s about. It’s about how humans can empathize with others. Even though we aren’t starving, emotions are stirred up within us that we can’t control. This is not about fighting about nations, it’s fighting for a change in this world to stop poverty. I don’t know about soon, but there has to be a day where we can see sense and accept each other. If that means that economies break down and governments fly out the window then so be it. I will embrace that day, and until then I will try and be a better person. Please don’t argue, because it’s a waste of time, space and effort. we are all human, it doesn’t matter if we’re English, Spanish, American, Chinese whatever, we are on this planet together. I don’t know what makes me sadder. This picture, these heartless people leaving hateful comments, or these people leaving ignorant prejudice comments.
First, relating to the picture I am glad that I found this site and this picture. I don’t know about other nations, but i think that sometimes here in America, we forget about some of the rest of the world. We understand that there are those less fortunate than us, but we don’t think about the extent. This picture can really pop peoples bubble of “world equality.”
To the negative speakers I have nothing to say to you, intelligent speaking would be a waste.
I was not surprised by the nay-Sayers, there are people with no lives everywhere, but i was surprised by the prejudice showed in some of the comments. You seem intelligent, but your stereotypes on youths, “red-necks”, and Americans in general are hot tempered.
I live in America so I should know there are some idiots. But aren’t there idiots everywhere.
I’m am also an adolescent, but i don’t think i am that bothersome. I have actual been commended on my intelligence and I am respected by my older peers.
Lastly, I have a good friend who is a “red-neck”so I cannot let that go by. The true meaning behind the words is someone who works in the sun (Usually farming) and their neck gets sun-burned from working all day.
Now I’ll ask. Is there anything wrong with making a living with a hard day work?

I have never seen greatest ignorance. Its not my intention to generalize, but I cant help thinking most american people is ignorant. I dont mean to offend anyone either, but all these comments.. I cant even imagine them being published in my country, and I’m not exactly proud to say that I’m Brazilian. Yes, this country in which education has extremely low quality, anyone would be ashamed to say any of this insensitive things.
Although our reach to knowledge and ways of living may be tougher, I believe the reason my people would never say such things is because we see atrocities like that almost every day. I wonder how easy must it be to be sitting in a privileged chair, tipping in a great computer, in an unbelievably beautiful city, having all the opportunities someone could possibly imagine, and comment about this choking picture with such coldness.
No children or any kind of human being should be in this situation. Its madness to think that anyone is free of this responsibility, it doesn’t matter where you’ve been born. All we need is a conscious and united generation, that get this world together so images like this one in Wells picture can never be seen again.
I have no hate for americans or any other people. Understanding is the beginning to a better world.

Whether or not this photo is legit really makes no difference. The point is that there ARE straving millions all across the globe. Photos like this cannot neccessarily change things but they certainly do draw attention to them. We live in our cozy cocoons and wear rose-tinted glasses. Pictures like these shock and frighten us into facing the reality of the world. We are all a part of it whether we like it or not.

It’s funny how we come back to countries and glories and reputations. The whole point is that irrespective of which country this kid is from, or whether it was the Americans, the Jews or the martians that provide free medical aid to third-world countries, i think it’s really difficult for us to agree that we’re just not doing enough. And ‘two tone’ is just having a good laugh just watching people overreact and then return back to their normal, unimportant lives. Come on guys, no one is denying the fact that this photo is amazing to say the least. myrna, I am really sorry you feel that way (about the comment on Americans a while back). Not all of us are like that. Some people are ignorant and immature and I apologize for that.
To those of you who have made ignorant and heartless comments, I truly feel sorry for you. These photos are here to change your points of view and open your eyes to a world beyond your own. People are this thin and they live every day like this. The comments about monkey arms and beef jerky are incredibly offensive and I don’t think you would appreciate them if you were the one in the picture. You should be thankful for what you have and you should pray or hope or sympathize for and with those who do not have much.
Also, about the comment about anorexia - that was uncalled for - anorexia is a disease, and is barely even a choice of lifestyle. My best friend was anorexic and it is really hurtful to read what you have written, because my friend is nothing like that. Anorexic people would never come on a website like this for your so-called “thinspiration”. Anorexia is a disease and your comments and harsh words only worsen the situation for those who are suffering from it.
This picture is incredibly heart-wrenching. It is really shocking - it physically hurts to look at it. I am so grateful for how much I have and will make a sincere effort to help those who are less fortunate.
