If ever there was a conflict that left me feeling little to no sympathy for either side, its the conflict surrounding Isreal. They make the Hatfield and McCoy fued look rational and sane.
But the position of the Settlers was just always untenable and undefensable. They just shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

The Jews were displaced from their homeland 2000 years ago by us. We put them back 2000 years later after we did our final act of wickedness against them. The Palestinians came in AFTER the Jews left, and they got the land by WAR in the first place, thus for Israel to reclaim it that way is no different from the Arabs and thus leaves them hypocrites when they complain.

If you forget for a moment the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict and just see the situation as captured by the photo. Somebody made a home and when the very authority you expect to protect your security tells you to get the hell out you’re scared and desperate. That’s what the defiance is in aid of. Not out of simple bloody-minded ignorance but because their world was crumbling around them.

The jews that moved into palestine are clearly europeans. You can just look at them and see the dilution. After 1500 years, you cant really go back home. Hell, even the africans in america cant all go back to Africa right now. That wouldnt be cool either, some settling force in America to plow a way for former slaves. But all Israel had to do was hang in there for a couple generations so that the Israeli population truly feels as if its their home, where they grew up and everything. I guess if you take the photo out of context, or really just take part of the context. However, its a situation that was wholly caused by their own choices. They chose to go and build in an area that they shouldn’t have.
And I don’t think its hyporcititical to say that the violent means of war to take land. None of the people alive today are the people who sent the Jews away from their homeland.
I personally find the mode of war to be a distasteful way of aquiring land, and I don’t see it as wrong to criticize those who engage in it.
It is simply juvenile and I feel that we should vote with our dollars as it were, our dollars and occasionally our own muscle. The advice my father gave me when it came to the schoolyard still applies. You never want to start a fight, only to end them.
I definitely think we should consider ourselves free to consider anyone who acts contrary to that maxim as belligerant, and nobody that we wish to associate with.
Then again, it would be quite nice if my own government would act by it and stop being a beligerant bully.

Lets be realistic here. You cant go back to a homeland your family owned fifteen hundred years ago and expect people to just hand you the keys to their house.
During the Zionist movement of the early 20th century, a number of myths were propagated about Israel. The first was that the land was almost entirely uninhabitable. The problem with that is when the first settlers came to Israel they met all these native people they didn’t expect. At first the native people were accommodating, it was only when the Israelis started stealing land and forcing Palestinians into smaller and smaller reservations that the violence began, and began it did.
Some might say, ‘but really, Europeans did the same thing to the Native Americans when they settled their country’. That might be true, if the Palestinians weren’t part of a culture that once eclipsed Western Europe in sophistication, and didn’t have access to the same modern weaponry that the Israelis had (though in smaller quantities) The so-called terrorist bombings in Israel are no ploy or religious warfare, they were motivated by a pure desperation distilled from years of scenes like the one above happening over and over again.
The second myth was that the Zionists always wanted Israel in the middle east, near jerusalem. That, of course, is untrue, Hertzl said many times that he would take any place that would not involve the dislocation of the native peoples. He even discussed a part of Argentina (which is ironic, considering) to act as the new jewish homeland. It was only later that religious zeal caused certain individuals in the movement to suggest Israel, which the full well knew was occupied.
The fact of the matter is Israel has acted as a destablizing force in the Middle East for the past 50 years. Any independant nationalist government that dares question how its fellow Muslims are being treated in Israel is quickly subdued under its USA supported and superior military force. The Zionists, ironically, have become the very people they sought to escape when they left western europe: butchers and bullies.

As an Israeli, this image has a strong emotional pull as an emblem of defiance against Israeli government policy. And when it comes down to it, the settlers are being displaced and humiliated (in that photo) and are coming to realization that they are mere pawns in a land grab program. In the end, everybody suffers from political Zionism, Jews and Palestinians alike.
Also, the “who was there first” argument is specious. The semitic tribes are a single people, and there’s strong genetic research to back this up. Both Jews and Palestinians share the same genetic and ethnic ancestors that settled Knaan and historical Palestine.

The country of Israel is a perfect example. Compare what has been done to develop Israel into a country that contributes to the world in education and scientific achievments. The Palestinians, even though they are supposedly supported by Arab countries contribute homicide bombings. I am pretty sure there is a lot more money controlled by and in Arab hands today than in all the Jews in the world. So why arent they doing something constructive with it for their supposed oppressed cousins?
Having said that, dont the Jews and the Muslims , and Christians all pray to the same (imaginary?) God? So, why are we fighting?

Unfortunately the situation in Israel is complex and complicated. It is beyond pointing fingers and saying I was here first. Additionally, you may all find this of interest. The land that was taken, was left with an entire whole and working infrastucture. Schools, houses, greenhouses. The only buildings destroyed were the synogogues in fear of desecration. This was a wonderful oppurtunity for the arabs living in that area to start up a working community. However, if we were to go to those places today we would find no agriculture and no schools and no community. I don’t blame the average Palestinian for this; but their leadership whom are open and proud murderers and terrorists who show complete lack of caring for their own people.

You can quite clearly see the top of someone else’s head at her left shoulder and some other figure between her waist and the shield, the policemen are at the very least standing 6 wide at the front (possibly 7 or
enough room for 4 0r 5 people to be hid behind her due to the angle of the shot. I think they have just been pushed down the shallow incline and the rest ran off and the photographer got a lucky shot!

I have had this mind boggling image in my personal collection of astonishing images since i first came accross it at the time of the Rueters news report.
What i have often wondered is what the wider persective showed and was this just a tiny instant he caught or a struggle?
I have a feeling there were others close by just from the curious aspect ratio of the image he has created by the crop - which does work well, drawing the eye along from the corner of the womans sandal through the Police forces to the embankment of onlookers - Yes, incredible, emotional, and utterly worthy of all the praise it has ben given.

In the end the whole fight over this piece of land is evil and wrong on both sides. Wars change maps. That is an unavoidable fact. The world leaders of the time designated that land as belonging to Israel. Unfair? Maybe…probably…most likely. But so is capitalism. The “Arabs” (a term I find slightly offensive. It always sounds like people use that term as an insult) were displaced. Sad but true. If they choose to remain then they are on their own. The Israeli government COULD just allow them to become citizens and live in peace. I try not to think about this part of our world (it upsets me. All inhumane acts do) so I don’t know if they have ever made that offer. If the government does or has made the offer and the Palestinians refused it then they are CERTAINLY in the wrong. If they have not made the offer then they are in the wrong (even if they are within their “globaly legal” right.

When in September 28th 2001, some Nigerians from the east gathered at the law campus of the Howard University in Van Ness (just a few blocks from the new multi million dollar building which will soon be the official embassy of Nigeria) to organise a symposium for Biafra, many took little notice.

These events here in same Washington D.C. which the Nigerian president has visited three times this year, sure got our attention. African correspondents at the Foreign Press center and those at the National press became curious. They asked question and this prompted some more inquiries which resulted in startling discoveries one of which led us to actually get the short wave band for “Voice Of Biafra”.
The truth is that, in a slow but somewhat steady way, the ill-fated Biafra idea, which we generally believed had died after three years of civil war in Nigeria is coming back to life. Apart from the official yet to be recognised embassy which they claim the suite is; apart from the “National” anthem, the flag and clandestine radio programming in Igbo and English, the movement, if it may be called that also has a detailed, active and properly hosted web-site.

First, I think the authors writing skills needs more improvement. Moreover it is obvious he has a bias opinion…which is probably okay because this seems to be some editorial stuff. Although I wouldn’t mind Biafra being, I mean, I’m Igbo and know we are smart enough to build a country, but did anyone who of you who is asking why the govt. is afraid of seperation, actually asked themselves that question? One big reason I see is economic. Both for the then new Nigeria and Biafra. Its like here in Canada where the french have ALWAYS wanted to seperate since Canada was established…for really valid reasons, not the govt. won’t let it fly. However, since we black people are too selfish we cannot set things out and prosper like Canada where French and English are both official languages, and the French are usually satisfied with their # of reps in govt. and etc..all the while I’d say the percentage of French in Canada is a lot less compared to that of Igbo’s in Nigeria. Just fix things internally….Africa is already fragmented enough. Check your maps and compare with the rest of the world!

Why should it matter what religion people are, its the picture we are looking at, a woman fighting for what she believes in against all those men. Who cares if shes an Arab, a jew, or a Christian the statement should be the same no matter what religion or race.

It’s pretty obvious that the woman has run up and thrown herself at the shield in an attempt to break through or something…her back foot is even off the ground and you can see the small dust cloud where her hand and shoulder made contact. If you look at jumpsuit guy on the other side of the shield, you can see that he has brought his knee up to help disperse the impact.
Kinda surprised that nobody else has noticed this.

This picture isn’t about politics or anything else other than the emotive response it draws and its symbolism. It says something about human nature that can’t easily be described, of our ability to stand up regardless of the situation. We need examples like this to balance the times when our species fail to act. It shows our flaws just as much as it reveals our potential, something that is demonstrated at every level, from the awards the image attracts to the comments on this page. It’s just a shame she’s such a hound. Far better if the woman had been Kate Beckinsale in a bikini.
