Kim Phúc was a resident in the village of Trang Bang, South Vietnam. On June 8, 1972, South Vietnamese planes, in coordination with the American military, dropped a napalm bomb on Trang Bang, which was under attack from and occupied by North Vietnamese forces. She joined a group of civilians and South Vietnamese soldiers fleeing from the Cao Dai Temple, located in the village along the road, to safe South Vietnamese positions. A South Vietnamese pilot mistook the group as a threat and diverted to attack it. Along with other villagers, two of Kim Phúc’s cousins were killed. Associated Press photographer Nick Út earned a Pulitzer Prize for the photograph. It was also the World Press Photo of the Year 1972. The image of her running naked amidst the chaotic background became one of the most remembered images of the Vietnam War. In an interview many years later, she remembers yelling “Nong qua, nong qua” (”too hot, too hot”) in the picture.
After taking the photograph, Út promptly took Kim Phúc and the other children to a hospital in Saigon where it was determined that her burns were so severe that she would not survive. However, after a 14-month hospital stay and 17 surgical procedures, she returned home. Út continued to visit until he was evacuated during the fall of Saigon, three years after the picture was taken.[1]
Audio tapes of then-president Richard Nixon in conversation with his chief of staff, H. R. Haldeman, show that Nixon doubted the veracity of the photograph, musing whether it may have been “fixed.”[2] Following the release of this tape, Út commented:
“Even though it has become one of the most memorable images of the twentieth century, President Nixon once doubted the authenticity of my photograph when he saw it in the papers on 12 June 1972…. The picture for me and unquestionably for many others could not have been more real. The photo was as authentic as the Vietnam war itself. The horror of the Vietnam war recorded by me did not have to be fixed. That terrified little girl is still alive today and has become an eloquent testimony to the authenticity of that photo. That moment thirty years ago will be one Kim Phúc and I will never forget. It has ultimately changed both our lives”.[3]

Tor did say that the US were trying to cover up their ‘gruesome actions’ - not the war itself. I imagine he was referring to the widespread use of napalm, agent orange, and the targeting of civilians.

Andy, he always does this. Tor thinks that hating America is gonna do something for humanity. Guess what? A lot of people hate America. Even some Americans hate America. It’s nothing new to talk like this about the US, and it hasn’t changed anything throughout the course of history.
I don’t hate it, even though I admit it needs to be fixed in some areas. Yes, I’m not afraid to admit that America doesn’t rule like we, the Americans, say. However, if I were to act like Tor, I’d be another ignorant, ironically calling others ignorant.

I’ve been looking at ALL of these outstanding, haunting, disturbing photographs. Why is it some freak always has to comment “I’d hit that” in each one??? IT’S WAR! before the vietnam war there was very little coverage of war. Despite what some may think, we are still very naive to the reality of war. It sucks, that’s why we send our troops out with GUNS, not FLOWERS! Wether you agree or disagree with war as a solution to international problems, the fact is that there are situations in which the adversary wont be persuaded with talk. Unfortunately many of our adversaries don’t follow international laws either. If we claim to be an ally of a less militarized nation, and they ask for our help to defend against oppressors, then we are always between rock and a hard place. Do we let the baby slaughtering, woman torturing oppressors have their way or send in our troops where we have proven that some of them will hit wrong targets, some will commit atrocious acts, and others will just do what is needed?
We all act as if Uday, Qusay, and Saddam didn’t do anything wrong and Bush forced our hand. I hate Bush, but it’s the representatives of each state that voted to go in. Lying conservatives and self-righteous liberals alike. YOU supported them, THEY supported the war, and the non-voters supported the Husseins. Looks like we’re all guilty here, even the ones that buried their heads in the sand while innocents died.(pre-invasion and post invasion)

It appears many people don’t study history! So much crap is published here, I cant believe it. (sorry to the few sensible contributors) The Vietnam war ended because of a free press willing to publish photos (such as the one of Kim **** and another of a man with hands tied being shot in the head) and report on the atrocities of the war. Also Nixon did not get the US out of Vietnam, regardless of peace talks, the North Vietnamese beat them out.
What you all should be concerned about is why similar reporting did not occur for the Iraq invasion

Some people should do some research before commenting, and not be lazy. I had the… well we will go with fortune to study and talk about this photograph in my college class. Roxy her clothes are gone because the napalm burned it off, which is why she was screaming that it was too hot. And Jeri, if you read the article, someone did help her. It was, in fact, the very photographer that took this picture. After he took it, he ran over to Kim, picked her up and carried her to the hospital.
