This is the picture of the “mushroom cloud” showing the enormous quantity of energy. The first atomic bomb was released on August 6 in Hiroshima (Japan) and killed about 80,000 people. On August 9 another bomb was released above Nagasaki. The effects of the second bomb were even more devastating - 150,000 people were killed or injured. But the powerful wind, the extremely high temperature and radiation caused enormous long term damage.

If you do the research, Matt, you’ll find out that Japan had been trying to surrender through formal channels even before the costly invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. This was MONTHS before we dropped the bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. This information was kept from the American public, but in any case, the argument that dropping the bomb was necessary to avoid an invasion of the Japanese mainland is wrong.
Nagasaki and Hiroshima (not to mention the more destructive firebombing of Japan) were war crimes that parallel the worst of Japan’s WWII offenses, but you don’t prosecute the winners.
The “us or them” mentality is a lie fabricated by governments to soothe people into committing horrible atrocities. We want to believe that when we commit atrocities they are “necessary” so our leaders invent an enemy who is merciless, ruthless, and without compassion.
Read
http://www.infowars.com/articles/world/pilot_who_dropped_abomb_didnt_know_japan_wanted_to_surrender.htm for more details about the abominable mass destruction that we unleashed on Japan. It didn’t need to happen.

Because the US media controls what we see like China or Al-Jahzeera. C’mon, we’re not that bad. And who says we have to believe our own media?
August 27th, 2008 at 7:38 am
To be fair, History Channel (which does check its sources) did suggest that the Japanese went to the Russian ambassador and offered surrender.
I can’t remember if the Russians ever told the Americans, though.
This was a few days before they dropped the first bomb, and the surrender had conditions that kept the emperor in power.
August 27th, 2008 at 8:07 am
that happened on the 2nd world war,
just imagine what damage the future wars would cause.
i can’t even want to think about it.

Haha, so I’m not the only person that has noticed this guy, he’s pissing me off and I’m not even American…
on topic though, if it wasn’t for the bombs, the war would have lasted so much longer and caused more deaths.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Luca. I love you folks and your revisionist history. You are full of $hit. If those bomb had not been dropped more Americans and Japanese would have died. There was no way the militarists running Japan were about to surrender until force to do so by the Emperor and public opinion.
August 27th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Actually, modern history books suggest that the bombs may not have needed to be dropped at all. The Japanese were being overwhelmed, you’d know that if you studied any of the battles that took place. Also, even if they hadn’t surrendered, they’re forces would’ve been completely wiped out in a matter of weeks. Check your history. And just as another thing to note: It’s the winner that writes history. The loser’s voice is never heard, partly due to the fact that they’re dead.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:44 am
@Anon
Please explain to me why, even after the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima they still didn’t surrender?
Look at the casualty rates for the invasion of Okinawa, both Japanese and American.
Then extrapolate those rates for the invasion of mainland Japan.
Those bombs saved several million Japanese and many thousand American lives, including my father.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Wayne,
Before you tell me that I’m a “revisionist” and “full of shit” you might kindly refute the evidence that myself and others here have provided.
The Japanese made surrender overtures before the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The only condition of their surrender was that the position of the emperor be preserved. The US rejected these overtures.
Here is an article by William Blum on the subject.
http://mediafilter.org/CAQ/caq53.hiroshima.html
August 28th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
If you don’t believe Blum, try THIS article. The central thrust is the same and this one is probably more credible.

I agree with what some of you have said here, this was totally unnecessary. 110%. To say that more people would have died is stupid. Look at the rates of deaths and illness from these two disgusting things today. The legacy of these bombs will be etched into the people in the areas for the rest of time. If this was a way to stop more deaths, well done America. You did good.
In case you didn’t get that, I was being sarcastic.

We dropped leafletes, days prior to the bomb, warning of a weapon with power unlike anything ever witnessed by mankind… Yet the Japanese stayed to fight for their deified Emperor. Down to the last survivor. To surrender, was to disgrace yourself, your family, your country, and most importantly, your God. It’s good to know that you would have been ok sending our Sons and Daughters of the time into the lions den to fight a relentless and desperate enemy… And that President Truman, was not.

If the aliens were, in fact, from Planet Tor… All I’d need to do is move to Canada. Since Torians believe Americans are the most evil beings on earth, everything would be cool. All joking aside though… I would most certainly stay and fight for my country. They may have weapons we cannot even comprehend, but I wouldn’t turn and run simply due to the posibility of defeat. The Japanese did the same thing, and we came at them with bigger bombs. We won, they surrendered, and then we helped them rebuild their world into what it is today. We warned them of the ***-kicking to come, and we delivered. You can’t blame them for sticking around and defending what they believed in… We just did it better.

Luca -
Am I to understand that the Japanese wanted to surrender, but tried to set their own terms which we rejected resulting in a continuation of the war and eventual bombings of Hiro and Naga and that is somehow OUR fault? When you lose a war, the terms of surrender are dictated to you - you don’t get to come up with a plan that suits your needs. Your conquerers get to do that. The Japanese rathered to fight than surrender their beloved Emporer who committed some of the worst atrocities in history (check your Korean history since you don’t seem to mind what they did to Americans). Are you forgetting THEY ATTACKED US unprovoked? Or does your conspiracy theorist website refute Pearl Harbor, too?
I actually gave you a chance - I looked at the link you provided. When I saw the source, you lost all credibility. You could provide documents written by Christ himself and I wouldn’t believe a word you say now.
To some, the USA will always be the bad guy regardless of the good we have done throughout the world. More people have been liberated under the stars and stripes than under any other flag. Once done, we give them their country back and always better than we found it. Well, I am proud to be your bad guy. I have fought for the USA and would again in a heartbeat. And anytime you gutless peace freaks need someone to defend your nation, you will call the bad guys and pray we get there before your afternoon tea.

Just so you know the Japanese we’re going to be entrenched in Japan they were going to allow the Americans to get close to Japan then open up fire and blow up much of the US fleet, and it would’ve been a fight to the last man, woman, or child as defeat was a disgrace in the eye’s of the Japanese.

After looking at both sides of the argument America did not NEED to bomb japan but the negotiations were nothing short of a cease-fire, rather then surrender they wanted to take all their freedoms back after killing innocent Americans at pearl harbor. Not only did Americans find that unfair but it was considered a threat. To prove that they would not let their loved ones die for a cease-fire they decided to finish it with over-kill to show they were the dominant force in the world, maybe excessive but looking back it was almost out of fear.

September 20th, 2008 at 2:40 am
The USA HAD to drop the bomb, not because they wanted to defeat the Japanese, but rather, because they wanted to send a message, a veiled threat to the communists in Russia (who were becoming a serious threat to the US). Thus a demonstration of their great power to keep the commies at bay.
Also, The USA didn’t invent the bomb independently (good thing they obtained Einstein). That aside, they WERE the only ones to decide to use it the first…. and, technically only, time (yes, other nukes have been set off, but tests do not count, unless they’ve started testing the bombs on people now).

america does need another planet to live into.
why? because of their uncanny corruption to the earth, the rest of the countries would go down with it.
but sad to say, we all have to share the same planet as the do.

I don`t condone War or the use of the A Bombs but they probably didn`t need to be dropped, as fire bombings were a much more effective tool. But then you can`t deny the power and symboism of the A Bombs and the grand message that they should never be used again
Japans original intentions for the war was to develop an asian superpower with them at the lead, but they were a century too late to really follow through with their plans. Again I don`t agree with Japans intentions here but I guess they though is Britian could do it then so can we
When attacking the US japan intended to cripple the american fleet and then negotiate a truce, but they failed rather misserably and thus signed there own defeat. How could a tiny island nation compete with the industrial power of the US.
Also Japan did a lot of fucked up things to all who opposed them and to their own people. But so did the victors
But as they say history repeats itself and countless nations have committed attrocities in past and will probably continue to do so in the future.
Overall it is a powerful photo and we shouldn`t forget the sheer power and destruction one big **** off bomb can do

Being a Veteran of the of the first Gulf war and having a grandfather who survived WWII, I feel compelled to comment. I can’t help but feel compasion for the innocent civilians that lost their lives, and the innocent people and families that endured years of pain afterwards. Having children of my own, the youngest bieng 5, I couldn’t imagine the pain of losing one of them. On the other hand I have a sense that if the war had lasted any longer, my grandfather would not have survived and I or my children would not be here today. War is truly ugly and not perfect. I can atest to that first hand.

How about you guys take some ******* history lessons. First off, if you know your history the Japanese were just as bad as the viet cong. They sent children out as suicide bombers, and %95 of the populous was part of the war effort. If we had taken a land invasion on Japan the US casualties ALONE would have totaled around one million. Not to mention the Japanese casualties. At the time every man woman and child would not hesitate to blow themselves up to kill an American soldier. The atomic bombs saved tons and tons of lives. The Japanese refused to surrender after the first bomb. So we sent another, end of story. War over, we saved tons and tons of lives.

You Fools! America dropped the bomb on Japan to send a message to Russia. By that point in the war Japan wasn’t even a problem, we had destroyed their naval and air forces utterly. All we were saying was “Hey, Commies look, we can really blow you the **** up”
December 13th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
this bomba made by me hero in america, dr. schopenheaur, the great jewish scientist!

We all are now stupider for reading your stupid oppinions.
December 22nd, 2008 at 12:18 am
oh yeah when sand gets hot it turns into glass so lets drop the bomb on the middle east and angle drill fom great britan and everybody will have cheap gas this is some of the stupid ideas or oppinions that i hear all the time in other country’s all over the world when i travel so to say it’s the U.S.A who’s ignorant maybe we should all realize that until the shoes on the other foot we might not have dealt with the situation the way we might have thought. so until these attacks happen to your citzens on your homeland without premeditation and warning and attacked first. Shut the **** up!! And to the rest of you there’s ignorance all over the world so atleast have the common sense to know that it’s not the people of a country you should hate it’s there goverment who makes these decisions.
December 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 am
It’s long since done and over with.
Whether people agree with it or not, in my eyes, is irrelevant.
Hating the US governement, the Japanese, people who post replies on this photo, or anyone else for that matter is never going to solve a thing.
Instead…one might look at this photo, and try to cherish life a little more. Out of respect for those whose lives were taken or affected by what happened in this photo….out of respect for the beautiful world in which we live, where so many terrible things can happen at any given moment.
Love a little stronger.
Life is short.
…just a thought.

I don’t care about all the people arguing that Japan was supposedly trying to surrender in January of 1945. The Japanese wanted a war with the US and they they got 4 years of it. They get everything they deserved.
December 23rd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
One more thing if the US had done this to all of our enemies over the last 60 years we wouldn’t have as many problems as we do now. Japan hasn’t even thought of starting a war with anyone since then.
December 24th, 2008 at 4:18 am
I can’t say because I wasn’t in Japan during WWII, but I really don’t think they had any intentions in surrendering. The hint for me would have to have been the Japanese soldiers, with their wives and children choosing to jump off cliffs to their death instead of surrendering.
December 24th, 2008 at 8:21 am
If you dont think Japan deserved this because of Pearl Harbor then read about the Rape of Naking. They deserved more.
