Man mutilated Rwanda
World Press Photo of the Year: 1994 James Nachtwey, USA, Magnum Photos for Time. Rwanda, June 1994. Hutu man mutilated by the Hutu ‘Interahamwe’ militia, who suspected him of sympathizing with the Tutsi rebels. About the image Nachtwey says his specialty is dealing with ground level realities with a human dimension. He feels that people need photography to help them understand what’s going on in the world, and believes that pictures can have a great influence on shaping public opinion and mobilizing protest.

I just got through reading the post for most of these pictures. Every single one has a pattern - the racist , the person shouting FOUL , the sad , the one person trying to sound reasonable , the one who is just trying to piss someone off. All have missed the point. Most of them do not know how to begin to take a picture , let alone put themselves in harms way to take it. These pictures are history - be it American or Foreign - you should study them and learn from them. Then you should write and tell others what you learned. You don’t have to reply to this because I have looked , learned and wrote and will never look again.

Your pretty darn perceptive, did that like come to you ina flash or was it a slow and gradual process? as for this photo, the photographers explanation merely confirms what many of us have been saying all along, none of these photos are to depict reality, all are meant to shape and effect public opinion, therefore the subjects and other dimensions of the shots are carefully chosen and posed, as well as the choices of the photos that are published! thats not reality, thats an image of a reality they want you to buy into, so they can influence how you think. try reading the caption dingbat!

1) National Geographic admits that it is not a scientific magazine. Please read a real, honest-to-goodness scientific (or even non-fiction) book.

those arent suture marks, they do that with burning twigs. All of that crap being said….. Rwanda only happened because of the German colonization in 1890 and then the later Belgian colonization in Africa. It is only after that that the tribes relations began deteriorating.

This picture shows just what hate and fear can do. People fear the unknown. Everyone who is racist, all those who hate for no reason, are truly just scared. Scared of the unknown or scared that they might not be the dominant race or country. All of this is just fueled from ignorance. I can guarantee more than half of the people who have written on here do not realize what happened in Rwanda. You don’t know what people went through because of the fear of the dominant group in that country. Please read the book “Left to Tell” and maybe you will get some insight.
To those of you that say that black people can mistreat each other just like whites can mistreat blacks-you are right. The important thing to realize about this is that the whole concept of race is not biological-it is purely cultural. There is nothing biologically or mentally different about any humans. We are all the same. I know people wont agree but it is science. Those of you who argue this are just showing your ignorance. Perhaps some of the things written on this sight are just jokes or just things said to get people worked up but you have to realize what you are encouraging when you write things like that. What is that man was your brother, your father, your son? You? Some things cannot be jokes and are not funny. Lets not encourage the suffering of others.

Apparently most of you american guys have a really poor basic knowledge about what happened in Rwanda in 1994. This was the most concentrated act of genocide in modern history, and 800 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus have been killed in 3 months. On average, 11 Rwandans have been killed every two minutes during 3 months. This picture is one example of what Rwandans have been through, and if at that time (sorry I was only 4, I couldn’t do a lot) more pictures like this had been published, the international community (and mostly you Americans, but also France, where I’m from and which I really blame for having been partly responsible for what happened) could have prevented this tragedy. So as a conclusion, learn a bit about history before commenting photos like this one. By the way, Britanny, you’re absolutely right. The 1994 Rwandan genocide was mostly the consequence of hatreds based on political identities constructed under the German, and, to a more important extent, Belgian colonization trhoughout the late 19th and 20th century. That’s really strange: I’m 18 and I know all of that. How can some Americans be so ignorant? As you can see I’m not making any generality about the American people. Just about a few ones who seem so dumb that I don’t dare to adress them directly.

Yes, genocide happened in Rwanda but Hutus are not solely to blame. It was a long wave of violence that targeted Hutu, Tutsi and Twa alike. Todate, the international tribunal mandated on explaining the events in Rwanda has shown very little evidence on how it was planned or executed. What we know for sure is that the infamous presidential “crash” sparked it. So far, the presidential crash that cause the death of two head of states has been treated as crash even by experts on Rwanda such as Dallaire, Samatha Powers and Des Forge. There is something fishy about Rwanda that beats logic. Now a Tutsi henchmans, Laurent Nkunda is threatening the survival of Congolese. He contributes to an ecological, human and animal genocide that has resulted in the death of 5,000,000 people. Worst, he is a born again Pentecostal fighting under the label of “rebel for Christ”. Death and misery are no news to this part of Africa, but a lot of western countries also carry the blame. Given the controversial nature of the Rwandan/Congolese conflict, USA could do better than support one side against the other. Supporting dialogue and peace measure could save these poor african lives.
