This is a famous picture, taken in 1930, showing the young black men accused of raping a Caucasian woman and killing her boyfriend, hanged by a mob of 10,000 white men. The mob took them by force from the county jail house. Another black man was left behind and ended up being saved from lynching. Even if lynching photos were designed to boost white supremacy, the tortured bodies and grotesquely happy crowds ended up revolting many.

April: Actually, Billie Holiday wrote strange fruit after stopping to go to the bathroom in an orchard (on a road trip, far away from a restroom) and finding a black man hanging from one of the trees.
Ronald: Are you serious? Those men are clearly black. Parts of their skin appears to be white because of the light.
I must say, I’ve been looking through the images and I am truly shocked as to what is being said here. These are amazing, horrifying, and inspiring photographs. I’m seeing hatred here that only proves the message that photos like these carry. There are many things I’d like to say to some of you, but I feel that I would be wasting time that could be used for something much more productive.

and when I say colorblind I don’t actually mean you’re colorblind (like your eye can’t differentiate between different pigments), because even then you could see black and white, and this is a black and white photo, so the contrast is quite obvious. No, what I meant (as I feel it should be spelled out) was a rather flat attempt at humor, referencing the excuse many people like to use when confronted with horrific truths…. oh well that also happened to blah blah blah…. that’s not what this picture is about.

I enjoy reading these comments as they are always varied, if some of them are plain stupid, and I don’t really like getting involved, but Ronald, open your eyes and you will see the two ‘black’ guys swinging. I think your confusion may rest in the black and white photography as I have Billie Holiday record with her image on the sleeve and due to the lighting of the shot her skin tone is over exposed and thus looks white and reflective - needless to say however, this was a mistake I made when I was eight and only found out in a game of trivial pursuit the extent of my ignorance. Please, people state an opinion, but don’t be stupid - it costs nothing to stop and ponder an image.

Sarah, those comments still exist because the problem still exists. Not as bad or as openly as before, but yes, the problem still exists. I have ancestors that once owned slaves. I have a scar in my leg where I was attacked and nearly crippled because I am white. I am married to a black woman. I worship in a congregation where mine is the only white face.
The ‘races’ CAN kiss & make up … if they are willing and if they can find a way around all the rhetoric the self-serving demagogues put out.
I am Irish and can only recommend that you read up a little on their history vs. the British and the Norse. There really IS no answer because this world is ruled by Satan and those are his results.
These young men did not deserve lynching. They deserved a trial and, if convicted, they should have faced whatever punishment meted out by the court … possibly even execution by hanging for the murder of the boyfriend.
But they never got their day in court.

The third man was convicted of the murder, He only served four years and later became part of the civil right movement. this picture was taken in my hometown… the men were most definitely African-Americans, and they were lynched because a huge mob of the entire town, at the time, thought that these two men raped and murdered someone… it is not a good thing what they did, but its not entirely a racism thing… if you got a huge crowd of 10,000+ people right now and they all thought two people raped and murdered a girl they would more than likely do the same thing or worse.

I’m in an adult praise dance ministry at my church, and a few years ago we did a dance to “Stange Fruit” for a black history production. When I first heard this song, I didn’t know it was about lynching until our dance instructor told us the background of how this song came about. Do you know if Nina Simone had a version of this song too? I think I remember my instructor telling us that Nina Simone sang the version we danced too. Maybe she was mistaken.

I won’t even begin to try to start a rational argument regarding most of the criticisms against races other than that of a European descent (specifically those against blacks and hispanics) but,
@qwerty, The conflict in Rwanda did not revolve around gangs, it revolved around two different tribes, the hutus and the tutsis. Members of these opposing tribes are actually different races in terms of descent and background. Just thought that I would clarify that it is a conflict among races although from Africa. There are a multitude of races on the continent, quite like you find in Europe (although most would be considered ‘white’).

Not even just blacks. The “Untouchables” in India, for example, are hated and ignored just for what caste they are born into. Also, WORLD WAR II. End of story! It’s not hate, ceejazz. It was fear. Slavery has happened everywhere since the beginning of time. And if suddenly all of their slaves were given the same rights as them, they would be afraid that they would take the power from them. I mean, back then, they saw african american people as lower than them. the thought of them taking positions of power, or having the same rights as them, was preposterous. I’m not making excuses, it’s totally wrong. But between light and dark skinned people there has been also just the fear of the color of skin. Dark tends to be associated with evil and light with purity. Again, wrong. But white people were slaves, too, you know. People of all races have been enslaved and treated as such. Racism is still a problem, yes, but it’s fading fast. Look at the US….. The first black president to ever be elected. It’s amazing. I got chills watching the election. In my generation, people hardly notice skin color (of course I am from the north and the west and I know that racism is still prominent in the deep south, but people there tend to be much more uneducated as well….). I have no hatred toward blacks, no one in my family is racist, none of the people i know are racist. It’s wonderful, actually. And as the statistics show, african-american males actually have a greater annual income than white females. White males are at the top, followed by african american males, followed by white females, followed by african american females. Not to mention the african american president, the most important job in the country. That more than half of the US voted for. Including me and my entire family and almost everyone I’ve ever known! Except a few (who I don’t like anyway!)

i do not condone this type of behavior and i am caucasian. If we look at the history of man we will see that human evolution has created the need for survival. Scientists have concluded that the Neanderthal Man lost out because he was not much of a thinker.
The Thinking Man is who we evolved from. I believe we must rise from the racial hatred and violence in order to become a better nation. The real problem I believe is that the system is too lenient and the Judicial System needs to be stricter on violent offenders. Judges in my opinion are trying to further their own careers by making unsound and unfair decisions against victims of crimes. My belief is that the courts do too much to incite hatred and not enough for victims of crimes. The bureaucracy is the true enemy. We need to get together and march to Washington to tell Congress that the homeowner associations are corrupt and unfair this being the problem creating much the adversity in this country today. Lets all try to live together and fight the greedy and corrupt system. The bailouts are not fair and those who have lost their homes should be bailed out first

I just want to remind you all that it isn’t the racism that people should be attracted to; it’s the justice done: these two men were accused of raping a woman and killing the husband: was there a deliberation or was the racism so high that these two or three men were scapegoated to conceal the true villains? To be honest I can understand the anger of the white people in this photo as the two men did rape a woman and murder her boyfriend but the lynching they did was obviously racially motivated but the same could be the said for the men that raped the white woman.
I feel saddened by the actions the white people in the photo took but I could see the justification behind the action, perhaps not to such a harsh extent.
