Little Rock Desegregation

In the effort to desegregate the American people on the basis of skin color, the U.S. Supreme Court finally declared that segregated schools are unconstitutional, and that all schools must be segregated from then on. The decision was agreed upon by the school boards and councils across the United States, but the white residents and students were not welcome to the new rule.

On September 4, 1957, nine black students were about to enter Little Rock Central School in Little Rock Arkansas when their entrance was blocked by the white segregationists supported by the Arkansas National Guard. The deployment of the guards was ordered by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus as a support to his white constituents. The blockade however caused a national issue, which led the President Dwight Eisenhower to intervene and summoned the governor to meet him. Faubus was then reminded not to interfere with the court’s decision.

The first nine black students in Little Rock Central School spent their first few weeks guarded by the police since they were still being blocked by the segregationists to enter the school. They also suffered physical and emotional abuse from their schoolmates. The Little Rock School Board meanwhile was pressured by its citizens to reverse the desegregation, which resulted to its closing in the following school year. It did reopen later on, in fall of 1959.

The thing is… she is not the subject of the photograph. Will Counts, the photographer shot Hazel Massery, the white girl shouting in front of the man. 40 years later she apologized to Elisabeth.

  1. Tor Says:

some proud americans here who wan’t to comment about their proud history?

  2. ma65p Says:

I thought Fed troops were sent to Little Rock to take over?

  3. Kathe Says:

All schools must be DE-segregated. Not segregated.

  4. EEB Says:

ma65p, Gov. Faubus first sent in Arkansas National Guard troops to keep the students out. Later, Ike sent in U.S. Army Paratroopers in to make sure that the students got in. My great-grandfather was one of the men called in to Little Rock. They came and called him out of his front yard and he wasn’t allowed to tell my great-grandmother of grandmother anything of what was going on, all they could know was that he was being “activated”.

  5. Jeremy Says:

Tor, care to comment about how this was a previous generation that is nearly died off? Not to mention the large numbers of white Americans calling for racial equality at the time.

  6. heather Says:

The white girl’s face always catches me when i see this picture. So full of hatred, and yet I bet she was an average teenage girl. It’s sad to see what racism does to people on both sides of the fence. Thank God it’s not that bad anymore.

  7. good-ness Says:

Hazel Massery was angry, and she was filled with hate, and she was a product of her raising. A teenage child is only just becoming aware enough of the world to decide for herself what is right and what is wrong. She was wrong, and it took the better part of her life for her to recognize and acknowledge that wrong. Let such an image and such a life remind us all to teach tolerance and kindness, ignorant of difference.

  8. Tor Says:

    I’d hit that!

  9. ramza Says:

    this girl has courage .

  10. Chris Says:

This has to be my absolute favorite historic photo of all time. I think what does it for me is the contrast in raw emotion between Hazel and Elisabeth—Hazel’s raw hate and Elisabeth’s raw apprehension and courage as she took those cautious, measured steps into history.

  11. Hemail Says:

    Respect!

  12. waddup Says:

    everyone loved Elizabeths new sunglasses…

  14. katie Says:

This is so upsetting and powerful.
Elizabeth must’ve been such a strong and courageous girl.
and sarcastic comments like some of those ^ are what send people to hell.

  15. waddup Says:

the journey to hell is paved with good intentions….

  16. waddup Says:

get yourself a pair of cheap sun-glasses, introducing the new billboard campaign for zz top…

  17. gabby Says:

hey, this chick is too cool, wonder if shes real old now…

  18. waddup Says:

ah Elisabeth, if only you could take my arm and stroll with me a while…..and a while… and a while yet more…. before you go back to mopping the floor.
All that education, wasted profligately….like so much water under the bridge, never realizing it would all one day come to an end and you would clean and mop for these white ******* and bear their husbands’ skinny half black ******* whelps to play in the dust in front of your wretched shanty…oh the pointlessness of it all.

  19. waddup Says:

Elisabeth, your class haunts me……..I return again and again to stare in perplexed admiration, in awe. You are truly a shiny Nubian Queen, my Sheba, the cool surcease of these hot days to lie between your thighs, to hear your endless sighs, make you utter little cries, and break through that cool and haughty veneer, make you moan my dear…its clear that you were meant for me.

  20. Fitz Says:

Many times I see a movie, or the news, and there is something about the people of the USA, and how proud they are to their democracy, and freedom, I think about this picture and those times, and peoples. After more than 10 years of the WW2, and the Holocaust, they were still on this level.
    It’s a shame.

  21. Tor Says:

    shame indeed it is.

  22. Chuck Snow Says:

Tor, you sound like a 9 year old dimwit.

  23. Tor Says:

    i’m supposed to, american.

  24. koko Says:

    koko 9 years old!!

  25. Lii Says:

Tor, how is your prejudice any different than that of the people who lived in that era? It’s ignorant, naive, downright STUPID, to lump everyone into one group like that. There are bad people within every nation, every race, every gender, age, and religion. And there are good people too.

What’s sad is you probably won’t even appreciate your own hypocrisy no matter how many times people point it out to you.

  26. mg Says:

that woman behind her should be ashamed of her huge mouth, its enormous!

  27. dmx Says:

this black girl is really quite elegant in those cool shades.

  28. Tor Says:

dmx: she outshines everybody else in the picture!!! strong lady

and that is positively speaking. not the menacing version of tor/me.

  29. dmx Says:

yes, its no wonder they are outraged!

  30. Doris Says:

she is very brave…there, I said it.

  31. Nigel Cliff Says:

On Sunday morning I watched a former race advisor to Ken Livingstone former Mayor of London say that the only way to empower young black children in the UK was to have Blacks only schools. He should look at this picture and hang his head in shame because racial segregation in whjatever form is evil and this picture prov es it

  32. cassie Says:

this was in london england? how could the mayor allow this to happen?

  33. T Says:

Tor you fool, there is more discrimination outside the United States then there is inside it… travel the world a little and learn something before you make foolish comments..
Children should be seen not heard…

  34. I.has.a.Tor Says:

    @ Whaddap

Your prose is so liltingly elegant. Well thought, well composed, well trolled.

    I applaud you sir.

  35. waddup Says:

aw shucks, he says as he scuffs his toe in the dirt, anybody could a done it….

  36. Liz Says:

We had such a good thing going with segregation. Hazel Massery didn’t need to apologize.

  37. Grace Says:

uhh that woman in the back deserves a slap !! Shame that ppl havent gotten further … still so much racism =/

  38. David Says:

Jeremy says this was a “previous generation that is nearly died off.” Let’s do the math. This is high school in 1957, so let’s assume the angry ladies are 16-17 years old. Now fast forward to 2008 by adding 51 years. That would put these ladies at 66-68, right at retirement age and the demographic mostly likely to vote. They haven’t quite died off and they vote heavily. I wonder if her feelings will influence who she votes for in November? ….hmmmmm

  39. Moses Says:

Jeremy: Nearly died off? Really, my mother was in high school in Jim Crow South Carolina in 1957, my dad was out of school. I’m in my mid 30s. These things aren’t ancient history. I see them everytime I see my parents, aunts, uncles, etc. That does not mention that fact that the legacy of these issues (on both sides) didn’t die when a few laws were changed.

  40. jeri Says:

oh come on, this was ages ago and simply by reading the comments one can see we’ve evolved past this type of behavior as a society…

  41. Chief Says:

The ******* yanks need a black president!

  42. Tyger Says:

Liz: WTF is wrong with you?!?! Explain to myself and the masses exactly how segregation is a good thing?! You can’t keep segregating over every little thing, otherwise you’ll find youself with a trait that warrants speraration from your peers. (’We don’t approve of the name Liz. It’s based on Elizabeth, like the queen; and we don’t want anything relating to royalty in this country.’ EXILED, *****!) Then tell my how good of a thing segregation is. Wake up and smell reality!

  43. chmurkenson Says:

    American- you are still rasist.

  44. Jeri Says:

why didnt anyone help this poor black girl?

  45. ANDROLOMA Says:

Yeah, why didn’t anybody help her? Feed her a vulture or something.

  46. thinkdj Says:

ERRATA at Para 1, line 2
” schools must be segregated ” should be ” schools must be desegregated”

  47. fvckwhitey Says:

Yeah the white ***** screaming at her looks angry…but Elizabeth should have been more concerned about the other white ho about to scratch her eyes out on her left…she looks really pissed. Did those white ho’s die of ovarian cancer from too much inbreeding, too (I hope)?

  48. Geroge Says:

    USA FREE……..jajaaaaa…..

  49. Adrian Says:

Maybe because, um, it isn’t true. And even it it were, it’s not their fault that they are here. How stupid do you have to be to force import a peoples that you don’t like and not be able to get rid of. Lol. You seem to have a really low regard for whites.
Also if you would like to back up your statement with some proof, that would be awesome. Remember, there’s less than 10% blacks, so your proof must show that the USA is NOT MORE “fucked up” by the 90% of whites.
Also, that however much the remaining 10% has “fucked” it up, you must subtract how much they also HELPED and use that result in your reasoning.

    Good luck!!!

  50. Cizzy Says:

Oh my…This pic is so powerful..and what the hell is with all u racist ppl..for god sake get over urselves! Why comment if ur just gona say bullshit…on that not WADDUP…I want ur babies… :)

  51. A V Says:

damn, I bet there ain’t no Black folks in Arkansas anyway. That State sounds white. and I’m not black nor am I white.

  52. waddup Says:

    @cizzy,
oh my, to die, and live again!

  53. Arm Says:

this was the beginning of the end for America!

  54. Angela Says:

i have always wondered since I first saw that picture in probably 6th grade how ashamed that girl was today, with her mouth wide open, screaming and verbally torturing that young girl.

i’m glad to hear she has apologized.

  55. Ucho Says:

Viva la humanidad!!!… Vergonsoso simplemente vergonsoso

  56. KSong Says:

so she would apologize 40 years later… when racial drama gets out of style? despicable.

  57. mstarr Says:

  58. sir Says:

Sucks for the kid that got stuck with the racist TX family. The south is still kind of tough. I would still have to agree with comment #6, it’s not that bad anymore. There just happen to still be ignorant creeps out there. The states have beat the world in having the first partially black president. States=1, rest of the world=0. He’s an intelligent man and that’s all that matters.

  59. Sam Says:

    damn white people! n_n

  60. dottie Says:

I bet her buttocks are clenched!

  61. waddup Says:

little did they suspect that her notebook contained a portfolio of degenerate sexual acts…when those hit Chicago she would be in the money and ditch this two bit town.

  62. Martyn Says:

she look like litle whoar to me

  63. lol Says:

she is a *****. all nigra ******* are whores, all they do is get pregnant and leech off the system.

  64. wow Says:

wow the united states really makes me sick, just look at their faces, filled with hatred. she would have not survived if she was not being protected by police.

  65. arm Says:

she made out just fine…….thank God she was here in the US where she could be protected. You filthy foreigners would have rioted and killed her no doubt.

  66. marjorie Says:

    go obama! make her proud!!!!!

  67. martyn Says:

obama will have her arse if she dont look out!

  68. two tone Says:

    she wants it.

  69. Jay Says:

    White people…not surprised!

  70. ihatewankers Says:

    black people, not surprised!

  71. bill Says:

why do they force themselves in where they arent wanted?

  72. ZombieSlapper Says:

Hey Tor, I’m a proud American and I’d love to comment on our proud history. America isn’t some homogenized, flea-infested third world crap hole. We’re a very diverse nation and the fact that a people who have started out as slaves have come as far as holding the office of president is quite a bit for me to be proud of. No nation is without its ugliness and I’m glad to say we’ve lead the world in the breaking down of racial barriers. Got anymore smart *** comments?

  73. ZombieSlapper Says:

Bill, they “force” themselves so they can have equal rights and access to a good education. Something every human should have. Get a freaking clue, redneck.

  74. Proud Says:

    Tor and others,

What makes America a great nation is our ability to move forward. Like every nation, we have made mistakes, but we have corrected them ourselves. We are not perfect, but we have a commitment to striving towards perfection.

Today, the two women in this picture, both Elizabeth Eckford and her attacker, tour the country together talking about the importance of racial equality.

    That’s America.

  75. luky Says:

“declared that segregated schools are unconstitutional, and that all schools must be segregated from then on”

DID THE WRITER EVEN READ WHAT HE HAS WRITTEN?

  76. funfools Says:

    this chick is too cool!

  77. foolsfun Says:

    this thick is coo tool!

  78. white chicks Says:

Since White Fang clawed his way to fame as the serial killer mutt. Folks ’round this way say a dog that kills will continue on that track; Because White Fang displayed these traits I know that it’s a fact. We had a coop with chicken wire

  79. GDoC63 Says:

Well at least the poster of comment 79 got it right….one time.
Niger is a river and a country.
******” is a term used by uneducated Crackers to refer to someone better educated than them.
It is also a term used by uneducated folks in general to refer to themselves.

P.S. That little key labled works to make you look less like an inbred idiot, though it doesn’t remove all doubt.

  80. GDoC63 Says:

    Wow, brackets are excluded.
the key is the CAPS LOCK

  81. waddup Says:

ah, her cool countenance still provides sorely needed surcease from an often hostile world, if she can look like that, I can too…..if only, if only she didnt belong to yesterday, and could be with me tomorrow.

  82. waddup Says:

the two of us, in dark shades, caring for nothng but our idle pleasures….

  83. marlboro man Says:

bet she has a nice smoke after this, to settle her nerves.

  84. Pigmentally Challenged of Uganda Says:

    HAWT. Looks like condie.

  85. Twisted0liver Says:

This is a very powerful picture. I am Caucasion and as is my Girlfriend she has two children from a past relationship and they are African American. I live in Canada and to those who say that racism isn’t as bad today i agree but its different, its more hidden. Just by the way i see the girls treated in public by others. mostly by the older community. It makes me angry. And whats worse is that i know more about the girls history then they do. is it better to forgot these horrible moments for the coming generations? or does knowing perpetuate the anger?>?
