It was over 60 years ago and yes it was atrocious and yes the things that they did then were terrible but it wasn’t exactly the German people’s idea was it? You know, as a german person who was born 25 years after the war was over I was raised with our history. The whole thing was told to me so many times (at school and in private). Some day one really starts to react like “I can’t hear it any more. Why telling me? I didn’t do a damn thing.”
In fact I’m a liberal person, having no problems with people - no matter what they believe or where they are born or what color their skin has. I judge people by their behaviour and nothing else.
But sometimes when I have to read bull**** like those things said in some of those comments above I really have to control my temper.
Why do so many american people think they have the right to judge other people and/or countries?
America tends to bring war into foreign countries all the time. Going to foreign places and intervening there. And they tell everyone that they have to “protect the free world” and stuff.

It is general knowledge that if times are hard, people tend to extreme positions, both left and right. Always has been, and still is that way (US is no exception btw).
There were millions of unemployed people, the German economy was kinda not an economy at all so to say and they had to pay astronomical amounts of money to the victorious countries of WWI. (which in the eyes of most citizens wasn’t even actually lost..)
Furthermore, the government had to eat up all the debts of the previous generation with the all the cesar’s faults and mistakes.
No wonder did the People mistrust their government and when the extremist Hitler came along, offered an alternative, named the jews as the ‘villain’ and offered a way to make everything better it was just a matter of time until they turned to him… (a lot of them anyway)

I read every comment and don’t recall seeing one post that says “I am American and I hate the Germans”.
Most Americans don’t believe they are superior to every other people or country. We just happen to have a leader and government that thinks it should police the world.
It goes without saying that the war was unjust and people suffered. My grandfather went crazy from having to fight in it. But that’s not going to stop me from going to Germany. Beethoven is my favorite composer.

- I know some Germans and they’re people just like me, and you. I can assure that none of them is Adolf Hitler.
- Americans you know, are not really Americans. They’re immigrants from Europe, because real Americans = Indians, who were killed by those immigrants. As an American from New Jersey living in Grafenwohr Germany, I have to completely disagree with everyone on here that has said the germans are exactly the same as they used to be. Every single person I have met is extremely nice and willing to help. The German people will bend over backwards for you; it does help to at least attempt to speak some German.
I love it here. I have to say, I’m tempted to reenlist and stay here.

I’m a Jew, and all of my grandparents, and their family, were in the holocaust. My dad was born in a concentration camp.
And I must say, I don’t hate Germans. I think what the nazis did was just..unforgivable, and awful and tears me apart. However, that’s in the past. You don’t punish people for what’s happened in the past.
And more astoundingly, I have a friend who’s German, and her grandfather was friends with a Jewish man during WWII. The nazis came for the Jewish man, and my friend’s grandfather told him he could live in his summer home and hide away. The nazis figured it out, and came for my friend’s grandfather. The burned down his house, and he fled to his summer home with his Jewish friend. They hid there through the holocaust and all came out alive.
Would any of you have the guts to do anything like that? Put your life on the line for someone if they came to you and said help me?
