americans. you staged the picture, and then clint staged the story behind the picture so that we all could get bored atlest two hours in a cinema. god bless hollywood and america
August 26th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
actually, this photo was recreated after a previous photo of the flag actually being raised. This is a staged picture based on a real one that the photographer took moments before.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Those Marines fought for every inch of that mountain, they raised a flag for their troubles. Everything else is irrelevant.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Jeez, Tor, we get your point. You hate America…you’re not making anyone else share your opinion by being so hateful about every single pro-America photo on here.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
my teacher’s friend was there. he arrived in iwo jima, and when he looked up to the mountains, he saw that flag go up.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Tor, we all know that the fighting on Iwo Jima was mostly tunnel based, and that they basically just ran up the mountain for a photo-op and then went back to clearing out the island. Seriously. This is taught in schools. Schools in America. Shut the **** up you ******* jackass.
@Harrison_Bergeron: How is context irrelevant? The marines may have fought for every inch of the island, but they did it AFTER the flag was raised. In fact, three of the men pictured were killed in the battle.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:46 am
so you got schools in America ?
August 27th, 2008 at 4:51 am
no we HAVE schools in America
August 27th, 2008 at 8:08 am
so you HAVE schools in America ?
August 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
god some of you people or so mean my granddad was there and seen that happend so how can you say its staged? its not watch the movies about Iwo Jima dumb ***
August 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Just because he saw the flag go up doesn’t mean this picture wasn’t staged. It happens a lot. Stage a picture of an event and make it look more interesting or have a better or angle or whatever.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Say, I can’t remember. Has Japan ever said “we’re sorry” to anyone because they started that mess? Don’t think so. What happened on Iwo Jima reinforced the need to drop THE BOMB and force the fanatics to stand down.
And Time Magazine Photoshopped this photo to show the Marines raising a pine tree in the global warming war. Time is garbage.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
5 US Marines and 1 Navy corpsman raised that flag. Please don’t forget the Navy corpsman.
As for claiming it was staged, it was a second raising of the flag but only because the first flag that was ordered to be raised on Suribachi was too small and could not be seen from the beaches. So they found another, larger, flag and raised it a second time and that was the photo that was captured.
This was all actually during the battle. There was no before or after the battle.
August 27th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Well, if you look at it from a broader perspective, Japan wouldn’t be where it’ at now, had Eisenhower not forced them to “restart”.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:14 am
My grandfather was (or “is” as you may leave the core but the core never leaves you) a Marine and he was in the battle for Iwo Jima. He personally knew a few of the men showed in the picture; yes this photo was “staged” (more to the explanation of “kthanxbaiii” (ed- damn internet slang)) but the event was not. The first time when the flag was hoisted they were still taking fire (my grandfather was at the foot of the hill). He and the few that lived and the many that died that day served us proudly. Though in reflection he wishes the decades of wars could’ve been solved diplomatically (though as a marine you learn that the fist or rifle can be a tool of negotiation as well when words fall upon deaf ears for one reason (ie power hungry, stubborn, blindly pridefull, greedy leaders of countries; not excluded our short comings).
Today, although once registered as a (conservative) republican he has strong opinions on how the administration as of late (past 8 yrs.) has handled both civil and international responsibilities that we Americans have let our government squander with out any reproductions to those involved thus far.
As Americans we should be proud of what our country gives us the opportunity to achieve. Though it seems as if it may be an illusion of freedoms it is up to us to turn that illusion into a reality that we can manifest our hopes & dreams into and not merely expect a handout from Uncle Sam. Though our roots as a country are shallower than others (though our bloodlines are as deep as any others) and we took this country in questionable ways we have even more of a responsibility to make this world and its inhabitants by making a better future in comparison to the past ( and present).
God Bless, God Save, & Godspeed the United States of American but above that the world as a whole.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:25 am
I swear, if I am flamed by any forum (or comment in this case) trolls for saying “United States of American” because of the simple type-o of adding the -n- at the end and my intelligence is questioned I will find your IP’s and hunt you down “irl” — Thee Internet being a viable tool of knowledge it also has become a breeding ground of anonymous stupidity. (that not so much in reference to some of the comments in this photo, but also the others.) Those who squander this life and its fruits are truely the excrement of the culture and of the world.

Naz, calm down buddy.
We all make spelling mistakes at times. Happens to the best of us.
Too patriotic though. Have a good one!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Go back to Berkley TOR!! the picture was staged, everybody knows that. However, the United States Marine Corps did take Mount Suribachi. Initially a small flag was raised, but to further cement this tactical victory a larger flag was raised. What the **** have you done in your life?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Actually this picture was not staged. The ORIGINAL flag went up, but the army commander said that the flag wasn’t large enough, that he wanted everyone for miles around to see it. So he sent a runner to the top with a bigger flag. Meanwhile, the photographer Joe Rosenthal who had missed the original flag raising by mere minutes had slipped and fallen. As he stood up, he saw them raising the second flag and decided to snap a shot knowing that he’d missed his moment. He dejectedly sent the film to the developer, the developer sent it to the press, and history was made.
I should know the story… I wrote a 20 page paper on the events, the photographer and all 6 men (yes there are 6) who were involved.
You want to argue the photo? Know the story first.

September 2nd, 2008 at 8:06 pm

September 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 am
Yup, gotta love them “Canadans” and “Mexcans”…
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:48 am
Four marine died later that day.
Their problem.
Why do you attack people and then complain that they shoot back?!
September 3rd, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Okay, to those of you who insist the photo was recreated for the photographer, (TOR) be prepared to realize what morons you are:
“Out of the corner of my eye, I had seen the men start the flag up. I swung my camera and shot the scene. That is how the picture was taken, and when you take a picture like that, you don’t come away saying you got a great shot. You don’t know.” -Joe Rosenthal
Bill Genaust, who was standing almost shoulder-to-shoulder with Rosenthal about thirty yards from the flag raising, was shooting motion-picture film during the flag-raising. His film captures the flag raising at an almost-identical angle to Rosenthal’s famous shot.

The war-driven economic expansion increased demand for credit: earnings from rediscounts in the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank alone rose from $141,774 in 1916 to $1,758,000 in 1918, for example.
The Atlanta Fed saw its government securities portfolio burgeon from nothing in 1915 to $19.5 million by 1918. Earnings, fed by the securities, were strong enough in 1917 for the Bank to pay all dividends due and still have $80,000 left, of which $40,000 was used to start a surplus account and $40,000 paid to the Treasury as a “franchise tax”, the Bank’s first transfer of earnings to the federal Treasury. From 1919 earnings the Bank was able to put $3 million in its surplus.
By instigating WWII, the Banksters were able to destroy eight monarchies throughout Europe while at the same time making extraordinary profits from their armaments companies. U.S. bombing runs on Germany were often specifically targeted at factories of competitors to the Banksters while carefully not bombing factories owned by the Banksters.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
yes, we Americans are nothing if not shrewd at advancing our agenda! its really amazing all you idiots allow us to prevail so easily. For instance, although you carefully point out here the economic underpinning of conflict, nothing will change as your people are too poor and uneducated to react to your information with disciplined action that would be effective at more than a minimal level. too bad, your losers!

the russian raise of their flag on the reichstag is ten times better. one guy dangling dangerously against 4 skinny marines busting their asses to raise a pole.
sheesh, talking about courage captured in a photo, US navy/marines are far behind the red army.
otherwise, no war effort is complete without PR effort, basic politics, chapter 1

September 9th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
This photo was not staged. The campaign caused 30,000 deaths and was more or less strategically unimportant (as was Pelelieu). The island that needed to be taken was Tinian and after that it was all ruthless firebombing of civilian population that convinced the Japanese that we would kill them all. Iwo and Okinawa just showed the Marines that it would be necessary.

I will simply add to this thread. My father (now deceased) fought for American and world freedom in World War II. He was wounded in battles in Eurpoe and Africa, twice awarded a purple heart. A much decorated veteran helped defend freedom so that all others could/can debate things such as Iwo Jima. Others of you that live outside the US can thank the heroes of your respective countries for the freedoms that you seem to take for granted.Respect the sacrafices that they all made in the hope for world peace. And for race- aren’t we all simply the human race? Let’s all try to get along. Life is way too short~
September 27th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
@hector….where the hell is eurpoe? i never heard of that place let alone a war there. As for your pappy, 3 purple hearts? sounds like he wasnt much of a fighter, got his butt kicked and spent all his time in the hospitals pretending he was still too hurt to go back to the front. Anyways, what kinda name is hector, mexican?
October 4th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Ben, you ignorant piece of sh**, almost the whole WW2 was fought in Europe and North Africa, excluding one or two navy battles, the Pacific theater was important for nobody. 20 million russians died to stop Hitler and what have you been doing that time - wasting time in deciding in wich beach you’ll set your landings. Thank God, that most of the people in the world are not Americans!
October 8th, 2008 at 12:21 am
It’s amazing at the ammount of hatred and anger that can be caused over a petty dispute over whether or not a flag was raised once or just staged. It’s even more amazing that so many people here feel as if they are experts on a battle that happened years before (I’m guessing) all of us were born and are willing to defend their case to the bitter end. Maybe the problem that we as Americans still feel justified in dropping bombs that killed thousands of innocent people and feel it’s our right as Americans to be proud of these wars. No one should be proud after the travesty that happened in that war. How many families did we tear apart? How many innocents killed? I’m here to tell you it wasn’t anything to be pround of. It’s one of the greatest wastes of human life that I have ever heard about. The fact that we Americans defend ourselves for killing innocents is not only barbaric, but disgusting. Maybe we deserve the stereotype that the world has labeled us with. Maybe we are just a giant group of pig-headed arrogant slobs who refuse to see the error of our ways.

Yeah, but most of them want to be Americans. Check out the immigration numbers. Europe gets refugees though…but usually they don’t have the means to make the choice between the two.

It’s not a staged photo. There was a flag raised first and it was decided a larger one was needed so it could be seen from the ground. Cameraman Joe Rosenthal took it as it happened. It’s still an authentic icon of the struggle that went on there. My father was there. Absolutely nothing was staged. — Tom B
December 23rd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
My Uncle fought at Iwo Jima, he was in the original picture before this one was taken. They called for a re shoot after the first flag was already raised and original was already taken, Finally giving us the picture we see today.
December 25th, 2008 at 4:28 am
Actually Jesse, an Tor, you are both wrong. Joe Rosenthal took that picture by freak accident. The flag raising was of a 2nd unimportant one, so Rosenthal just decided to take the picture. He quickly snapped it, then didn’t think of it at all. He was then asked if it was staged, thinking it was a “Gung-ho” shot of where all the men were by the flag after it was raised, so he said “Yes”
Tor, you are plain ignorant. This is the most reproduced picture in history, kinda sad it’s down nearly at the bottom. Ignorance can be bliss Tor, but not for you sadly.
