First pic on the internet
Back in 1992, after their show at the CERN Hardronic Festival, my colleague Tim Berners-Lee asked me for a few scanned photos of “the CERN girls” to publish them on some sort of information system he had just invented, called the “World Wide Web”. I had only a vague idea of what that was, but I scanned some photos on my Mac and FTPed them to Tim’s now famous “info.cern.ch”. How was I to know that I was passing an historical milestone, as the one above was the first picture ever to be clicked on in a web browser!”

you would think the first picture on the internet would be something more symbolic, or at least more interesting.
this picture is so boring and ugly. it seems a waste.

Could you please change the title of this picture to “First pic on the World Wide Web”? I guarantee you, this is NOT the first “pic on the internet” There were plenty of images on nntp and ftp servers long before info.cern.ch:80 was running.

I was viewing pictures on the Internet a LONG time before the World Wide Web started.
“First pic on the WWW” should be the title of this.

The comments on this site are pathetic. We’ll have to filter WWW users, quickly. no respect, no subtlety, no intelligence, no culture, no curiosity. Only gross vulgarity.

Just because you clicked it in a web browser does not mean you were clicking it on the internet. This picture and entry is fail.

Actually, Sylvano, this wasn’t the first picture on the web. All 1991 I was giving talks which pictures — remember the NeXT machine could handle sounds and movies and images including postscript very smoothly so they were all on the web from the word go (December 1990). The web architecture diagram for example was a early one. With all due respect to Les Horribles Cernettes - which I am sure the first in many other domains
. The comment about the Internet is spot on too — must have been millions of pics on FTP servers, and in fact these all were all grandfathered onto the web because they instantly got FTP URIs the moment URIs were invented. So early things like the Vatican renaissance museum used photos on existing FTP servers. — Tim

I agree with some of the other sensible comments here - the internet is not the same thing as the www, the internet was running some time in the 1970’s. Don’t tell me they didn’t have digital images even back then. Heck, I was creating digital (scanned) images back in the 1980’s at school, when I started university in 1993 the internet and www were already quite populated with images and websites (mostly nerdy stuff like Star Trek, hurrah!)
Pictures had been up on BBS’s for years before the 1990’s.
