Face Off: Oka Crisis
The Oka Crisis was one of the well-publicized violent conflicts the Canadian government faced against the First nations that began on July 11, 1990 and lasted until September 26, 1990. The immediate cause of the conflict was due to a land dispute between the Mohawk nation and the town of Oka, Quebec, which resulted to one direct and two indirect casualties.
How important is the land you stand on? For some, a piece of land means a highly profitable investment, but for the Mohawk Nation, their land is not just a piece of soil, but a legacy passed to them by their ancestors. And this was something they had to fight for even it had to cost their lives. During the conflict, Mohawk Warriors set up barricades around the town of Oka, and a series of confrontations between the Mohawk Nation and the Sûretè de Quebec that often led to violent face offs.
The Oka Crisis ended on September 26, 1990, almost a month after the Mohawk Warriors negotiated an end to their protest. The proposed expansion of the golf course was eventually cancelled.

year, 1990
date, most likely july 11 or close to.
great to see some photos have dates of when they were taken long ago, while a great stand against the government is unnoticed… cant destroy a white mans grave to put a parking lot, but you can sure do it to natives…its a shame
August 25th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Oh please. What a load of bull. White men’s graves are moved everyday for buildings and parking lots. Believe it or not, white men are discriminated against daily too. Give me a break…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
By the way, I am Shawnee. Stop being a victim.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Troy–yeah I bet your are 1/16th Shawnee and Cherokee too, just like every other white person out there.
Give me a break. Poor poor white men so discriminated against.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:51 am
Your both acting as victims. You talked earlier about them moving the graves of the whites, but in the case of many natives they only know a general location and that entire area is sacred. How would you feel if someone tore down, say your local church, or mosque or whatever? Wouldn’t you want to protect it?
August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 am
you should be ashamed. who honestly cares if your white or native american or what, your still a ******* person, we’re all discriminated against one way or another, and we cant help what our governments do. so shut the **** up and get along you immature whiney little pussies.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Whites mens graves are moved, what about our homes, our children taken away from us to go to schools where they were molested and beaten by us, i hardly think our graves being moved should justify the actions we took against them. First we come to their land, their homes, they teach us how to survivor, how to live in such conditions. Than we force our religion on them, and what once was a land of 7 peaceful nations is now in war. And than we try to kill them off, by killing their source of food and respect for the land, So **** our graves being moved for parking lots, and **** the people who can think that justifies 200 years of evil from the white men.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
We CAN help what our governments do Steve. Atrocities by governments are only allowed by apathetic constituencies.
We should hold ourselves accountable for everything that our governments do.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I dunno, its certainly not simple, many native groups in ontario and quebec are displaced american tribes who received the land from the canadian/british gov. after siding against the yankee’s in the war of 1812, not many native groups have long (undisputed by other tribes) claims on land, do to the constant waring between tribes that caused endless shifting of tribal boundaries. Natives certainly weren’t peaceful or harmless, they were just as violent and cruel as any other human being, they just weren’t as well organized, unfortunately for them I suppose. well, food for thought…

August 26th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
“…even it had to cost their lives.”
As far as I remember, only one man lost his life during that conflict. He was a cop that accidentally shot himself.
Max, again
August 27th, 2008 at 1:02 am
Later than July 11…the army weren’t called in until August 14. That’s not Lasagna in the photo, it is Brad “Freddy Krueger” Larocque and Pte. Patrick Cloutier of the Van Doos.
The cop who died was a Coporal Lemay and I think there was never conclusive proof as to what happened to him, although I remember at the time of the inquest that there was testimony to the fact that calibre of the bullet that killed him was inconsistent with any of the weapons the Mohawks had. Plus he was shot from behind while taking a position against the Mohawks.

August 27th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I was on the site a week during the conflict and I never fear to be shot. It looks like an army conflict when you look at the pictures but it wasn’t. The army was there because the canadian police has no power on that kind of situation. The mohawks was more armed than the police so, just for security, the army came…

It’s always sad to see natural habitats cleared away to let “civilisation” grow and progress. The natives claimed that the proposed golf course would require ancient trees to be cut down on their ancestral land, and they didn’t approve.
If I remember correctly, about one or two years later, those ancient sacred trees were actually cut down… BY THE NATIVES THEMSELVES… to make room for a casino or some other piece of crap like it.
And all of that cost a lot of my tax money to buy their peace, all of that for nothing, since they cut the trees anyhoo.
August 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
The battle b/w Natives and “non-natives” in Canada is an ongoing thing. What pisses me off is how throughout the world, colonization/imperialism has been an action throughout history. The fact that Europeans colonized North America is just part of life.
I would love to see Natives educate the country more about their lifestyles but it just doesn’t work that way. For the most part, however NOT ALL, Natives get their gov’t benefits, cash in cheques that the gov’t sends them to keep them happy, and head to the closest liquor stores and they spend it all. Their education is free, they get so many benefits, and yet, most Natives that I have met are not educated or hard working.
I understand that “this was their land first” but almost everyone has some unfair treatment in their ancestral history - it’s just a matter on if you dwell on it or not.
August 27th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Ya, the “whites” took away there culture, threw them in residential schools, suppressed their language and religion. I’m “white”. What that really means to me (not that anybody cares what the original nationality of a white person is, we just have to check off “caucasion”), is that I’m Irish, Scottish, Danish, Polish, Ukranian, and a little farther back, German, Jewish, Austrian, French. My ancestor’s came to Canada because they were facing the same kind of discrimination and brutality that the Natives in North America had to deal with long before my family did.
Some of my people came over because of the Irish potatoe famine, in Poland they were persecuted by the Catholic Church. And some started out in America, where they sought freedom to practice their own religion and for self determination.
In the generation before me, my Dad even, tells stories about how he was discriminated against, denied jobs, beaten up in school, because of his Polish name.
Nowadays, I don’t have to worry about that. Except that I’m a woman, and I deal with the reactions to that every day.
So I guess I just don’t like it when anyone says, the whites persecute them. As if that word is all encompassing. As if it means that something that some group of people did to them a long time ago, directly points to me, and my ancestors. That is a very virulent form of racism in our country today, and it doesn’t contribute to peace and understanding.
Forgive, understand, and be on guard, because there will always be people to hurt you.

Byzantium, i never said that it was immigrants fault, you act as if you’ve been violated, I’am white too left Germany because my family was Jewish in WW2 I’am saying we should give them respect for their land claims because after all, the English and the French really fucked them over, why would i care about a polish immigrant that came over, if i did id be mad at every white person in this country, but iam not, i just think its terrible how we treat them (we, as in our government)
August 28th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

a note to “robert the american”, you are in no position to lecture us here in canada about racism, our economy was not founded on slavery, we don’t execute mentally ill juveniles and my kids have never been near a drive by shooting, one last item, we never put a bounty on our natives and yes we do have a history of ill treatment toward our first residents, but we did not kill them off for sport like you did….americans have a bad habit of commenting about things they know nothing about, like freedom and democracy

(And don’t say I’m exaggerating I lost my home and land so a highway could be made straighter) They lose their homes so a city can give the land to wall-mart If I had the choice between giving up the grave yard or my home ******* sorry grandma and grandpa but this is my home!

People teaching in the residential schools were the only people who actually cared for the Indians, living everything and going to live in the middle of nowhere, often as volunteers. They were teaching the Indians how to adopt to the civilized world, to read and write, to learn some useful trade. And this is not true, that the children were taken away from the families, as a general policy. The schools were formed on voluntary bases on most part, and only children of disfunctional Indian families, where alcoholism and abuse took place, were taken by force.
To accuse those dedicated good people who taught in residential schools as monsters doing outrageous things to their students is injustice crying to high heaven.
The whole victim and survival attitude among Indians is blown up way out of proportions by greedy lawyers, who smelled the leftist wind of political correctness, which hijacked this once great country of Canada, and used it as a great way to make easy money. It is not a secret, that law firms sent their agents to reserves, to hunt for anyone who attended residential school, and to convince him or her, that they were abused, and now are entitled to sue the government and churches.
Your accusation Byzantium, are result of unjust stereotypes being spread by leftist propaganda and greedy lawyers.

Some of my people came over because of the Irish potatoe famine, in Poland they were persecuted by the Catholic Church.
=======
That’s another full of crap myth spread this time by some circles of Jews against Poles. It greatly puzzles me why so many of you Jews are so hateful toward us Poles, to the extend, that you blame us for the Holocaust, sometime more even then Germans.
Catholic Church in Poland never prosecuted Jewish people. In fact Poland through centuries was a safe shelterer for millions of Jews fleeing prosecution in other parts of Europe. Of course, because of natural exclusives of Jewish nation and lack of blending with the rest of the community, there where some kind of tensions among the both peoples, but never resulted in any kind of violence. The oppression on Jews in Poland brought Germans with the beginning of World War II. It is true that some Polish low lives, who are present in all nations, cheated Jews, taking from them money as a payment for hiding and denouncing them to Gestapo instead. However there were also many Jews, who welcomed invading Poland communist Russians, at the same time from the East, and denouncing hiding Poles to them. Many of Jews were members of NKWD and tortured and killed Poles during and long after war. So, you are not blameless either.
And also it is true, that during late 60ties, Polish Communist Party, in which were many Jews, had some kind of internal fight among its fractions, and as a result adopted antisemitic policy, extended not only to party members, but to ordinary citizens. At that time many Jews were expelled from Poland, but this had nothing to do with the Catholic Church.
The claim that Church persecuted Jews is either ignorance or deliberate lie, who knows for what hateful reason being spread.

Black Men : We’re sorry our ancestors needed some help, lazy ********, and found your race to serve them. We are sorry, please don’t hold it against us.
Indians : We’re sorry our ancestors needed a place to stay and couldn’t ‘buck it up’ in Canada. Seriously, it’s a nice piece of land, but we shouldn’t have been so overly aggressive. We are sorry, please don’t hold it against us.
All Other Races: White men and women have pissed off various races over the years, but can you seriously hold all whites accountable for what was done years ago? No. You can and should beat the shit out anyone who shows that kind of negativity now a days.
My 2 cents anyways….
October 31st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
get over your history and actually start changing how you act towards other races.
November 4th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Although there is not a lot of blatant racism towards First Nations (at least in the media and popular culture), ignoring the birth rights of an entire people and the wrongs done to them in the past, is just as bad. Sweeping issues under the rug with the excuse that it happened long ago, and that we are not the same people that perpetrated this home invasion, is unacceptable.
I hope more young Canadians in the future will see the benefit of educating themselves about the issues of our country concerning First Nations, because that’s how the issues should be seen. Not as the business of First Nations people alone, but as a national issue that should concern everyone in the country.

You actually might want to do some real work and learn the real facts before you start spouting off the “facts” you saw on some YouTube video.
Have you actually ever heard the stories?
I remember stories my grandparents telling about getting punished for having his hair too long or speaking our language. My family was not abusive or alcoholics, that was the standard indian schools that were available, not the orphanges where they abducted kids.
Oh and just for the record, I do not get everything handed to me, I get no royalties from casino money, there are only a handful of tribes that make enough to give money out to the nation. Most the others try to use the money to help run the under-funded tribal orphages, scholarships, schools, etc. I barely got $1000 a semester for college and only got $600 a few semesters. Barely covers the price of engineering books.

To robert saint amour: If you want to compare the United States and Canada you should get your history right first. Canada most certainly did place bounties on Native Americans and killed them for sport, read up on how the Beothuk were completely wiped out in Newfoundland. The first use of the Gatling Gun was to wipe out Metis settlements out West. Oppression is awful everywhere so I suggest you don’t proclaim your own innocence if you don’t know your history.

I’m half native and half english. I don’t hate all “white” people just because a priest beat my mother. I hate the individual. I’m reading a shit load of comments on here, and I’m kind of disappointed. You’ve seen this one photo, and you make racist and hateful remarks.
Move to a northern reserve and see what it’s like. The infrastructure is weak. Housing is limited because the power stations and water pumping stations can’t support it. Three to four families in one house. Now that’s living the life! Canada is third world up there. But all you can complain about is that we have tax benefits. We have to be approved by the government to have our education funded. I wasn’t approved so I’ve paid for my tuition on my own (twice).
Natives are stuck between tradition (living on the reserve) and melting away into society (living off the reserve). If you’re a religious person, would you give up your faith to live a better life? You’re not making the situation any better. I just hope that you are a minority in this country.

The best thing I saw on T.V.
was that S.Q. (Securite` d`Quebec) cop catching a bullet with his teeth.
Condolences, Madame Canadiana,
but your husband was a f*****g stuck pig.
This song’s not about some romantic account of history.
It’s not about martyrs or mythos, no heroes in burnings of effigy.
It’s about a native girl flippling her lid just to try to keep some self respect in tact.
It’s about an Oka the size of a fist held in resistance and her will to fight back.
And the girls at work, they still deny their racism.
They claim tolerance for all, but it seems the degree of racial slurs is their gauge,
and it defines tolerance as hate.
27 million “girls-at-work” here.
Imagine fighting that for 500 years.
And golly-gee! how valient!
how the white oppressor makes allowance for calculated gestures of insurgence
(all tightly tethered to their purses).
Oka had that orchestration aborted.
Oka f****d their rules to choose a future self-determined and i, for one, support it…
The smartest thing i think i ever said:
“if a Kevin Kostner Kavalry is your means to their end, then the struggle is dead.”
Why do we pretend that our approval is upon what they depend?

Why the hell they didn’t just shoot all those indians and shut the whole thing down?

We can all agree that we gotta thank the natives for teaching us to make popcorn.

I have never understood why people insist on saying things like “we oppressed the native americans” . Our forefathers may have committed all kinds of atrocities, but its all in the past now. It’s like saying, ” we discovered electricity” or “we invented the radio”. It isn’t right to assign credit to an entire race for actions committed by someone of that race in the past. That would be like if your grandfather murdered someone and you got convicted of the crime.

Why do they want their land back they are NOT using it. Alot of indians don’t work (but complain theyon’t have money even dough they don’t pay taxes nor electricity) they don’t go fishing or hunting as much as they use to. I don’t mind that they want to protect nature it a good thing but they turn around and distroy it themselves!
