Emmett Before
Emmett Till Lynching
Fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was excited about his trip from his home in Chicago’s south side to the Mississippi, Delta to visit relatives. Prior to his departure, his mother, Mamie Till Bradley, a teacher, had done her best to advise him about how to behave when interacting with Southern white people. Till’s mother understood that in Mississippi race relations were a lot different than in Chicago. In Mississippi, over 500 blacks had been lynched since 1882 and racially motivated murders were not unfamiliar, especially in the Delta where Till was going. Racial tensions were also on the rise; the United States Supreme Court’s 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which ordered the end of segregation in schools, created dismay throughout many Southern white communities. Furthermore, the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacy groups began working to maintain life as they knew it.
With his mother’s warning and wearing the ring that had belonged to his deceased father, on August 20, 1955, Emmett Till setoff with his cousin Curtis Jones on the train to Mississippi. When Till and Jones arrived on August 21, they stayed at the home of Till’s great-uncle Mose Wright, just on the outskirts of Money, Mississippi.
On August 24, the boys drove Wright’s car into the small town of Money and stopped at Bryant’s Grocery store to buy some candy. Prior to entering the store, Till pulled out some pictures of his white friends in Chicago and showed them to some local boys outside of the store. The boys dared Till to talk to Carolyn Bryant, the store clerk. Till went into the store, purchased some candy, and what happened as he was leaving is unclear. Till either said, “Bye, baby” or he whistled at Carolyn Bryant.
Neither Till nor Jones understood the magnitude of Till’s act, so they did not tell Mose Wright what had happened. They continued to think nothing of the event as three days passed without incident. However, on the fourth day early Sunday morning, Roy Bryant, Carolyn’s husband, and J.W. Milam, Roy’s half-brother, knocked on the door of Wright’s home. With a pistol and flashlight in hand, they asked Mose Wright whether three boys from Chicago were staying with him. Wright led them to the room where Till was sleeping, and the men told Till to get dressed. Wright unsuccessfully pleaded with them to just whip Till. As they were leaving, they threatened to kill Wright if he told anyone.
Several hours later, Mamie Till was notified of her son’s kidnapping. A search of the area was conducted, and Mamie Till notified Chicago newspapers of her son’s disappearance. Wright told Money’s sheriff who had taken Till, and he arrested Bryant and Milam for kidnapping.
Three days later, Till’s body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River. It was weighted down by a seventy-five pound cotton gin fan, which was tied around Till’s neck with barbed wire. His face was so mutilated that when Wright identified the body, he could only do so based on the ring that Till was been wearing.
Although Mamie Till experienced difficulty in getting her son’s body sent to Chicago, when it finally arrived she made the decision to have an open casket funeral. Mamie wanted the world to know what had happened to her son. His right eye was missing, his nose was broken, and there was a hole in the side of his head. Fifty-thousand people attended the funeral. Jet magazine ran photos of Till’s body; soon Till’s murder became an international story.
Meanwhile, Milam and Bryant had garnered support. Whites in their community claimed they were innocent and supported their defense financially. The trial began on September 19, 1955 in Sumner, Mississippi. The entire jury was composed of white men from the defendants’ home county. At trial they asserted that the body recovered from the river was not Till’s body. Instead, claimed Milam and Bryant, they had taken Till but had let him go. They alleged that the NAACP and Mamie Till had dug up a body and claimed that it was Till. According to their defense, Till was hiding out in Chicago.
Finding witnesses was difficult for the prosecution. In the South, it was dangerous for blacks to testify against any white person, so those who knew anything were reluctant to come forward. However, white and black reporters and the NAACP were able to find witnesses against the defendants. Willie Reed testified on the stand in barely a whisper that he had seen Bryant, Milam, and another man with Till. Further, he testified that he heard screaming coming from the Milam barn. When Milam came out of the barn with a .45 on his hip, Milam asked Reed if he saw anything, and Reed said no. Mose Wright had decided from the beginning that he was going to testify. When Wright took the stand, he testified that Milam and Bryant had taken Till at gunpoint from his home. After Reed and Wright testified, they were quickly escorted out of Mississippi by the NAACP.
Testimony also came from Mamie Till. She testified that the body she buried was her son, Emmett Till. Neither Milam nor Bryant testified. The trial lasted five days. In the defense’s closing argument, Milam and Bryant’s attorney forewarned the jury about convicting the defendants: “Your ancestors will turn over in their grave, and I’m sure every last Anglo-Saxon one of you has the courage to free these men.” The jury deliberated for only 67 minutes; according to one juror, it lasted that long only because they stopped to drink soda. The jury found Milam and Bryant not guilty. They concluded that the prosecution had failed to prove that the body recovered from the river was Emmett Till.
On January 24, 1956, Look magazine published the confession of Milam and Bryant, who had agreed to tell their story for $4,000. According to their confession, they beat Till with a .45 in Milam’s barn. They proceeded to take him to the Tallahatchie River where they had him undress and then shot him. A gin fan was tied around his neck with wire in order to weigh the body down in the river. They proceeded to burn Till’s clothes and shoes.
Justice Didn’t Prevail
Milam and Bryant were never charged with any other crimes relating to Till’s murder. After the trial, blacks boycotted the Bryants’ store, which forced them out of business. Both Milam and Bryant remained in Mississippi until their deaths; Milam died of cancer in 1980 and Bryant died of cancer in 1994.
The murder of Emmett Till was a shocking example to the world of the danger, inequality, and prejudice that blacks often faced in the South. However, Till’s murder helped spur the civil rights movement. It was only one hundred days after Till’s death that Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of the bus.

wow. how utterly ignorant. When someone is beaten beyond recognition you CANNOT RECOGNIZE THEM!
… this is a story of the south that gets looked over far to easily, but is just as important as things like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.
Please be more considerate of the dead! Especially those killed simply because they admitted to finding a woman of another race attractive.
What a sad story. His mom had a lot of courage to have an open casket funeral.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
This is a heartbreaking photo and story. I can understand the mother’s motivation for having an open casket funeral - her son would not have died completely in vain. And tothe two people who posted comments before me, you are both disgusting sorry excuses for human beings.
September 18th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
republicans.
yeah, we’re different colors. but we’re not black, white, yellow, we’re human.
September 19th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
At least Milam and Bryant both died of cancer.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
This shouldn’t happen to anyone, no matter their color!! Its inhumane, morally, and ethically wrong. People who think differently are the dumb asses!!
September 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I like the inbred hick who posted the same thing twice. You gotta be smarter than the computer, son. I’d argue with you, but there is no point. Not only could I not convince you that you are wrong, you could not convince me that you will do anything of significance with your life. If I’m ever in your neck of the woods, I’ll pop by so you can pump my gas.
September 19th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Stupid inbred hicks are so stupid, it’s funny.

I have to clear up something here.
Emmett Till was 14 years old. He was turning 15 that year.
The murderers, when they confessed told the reporters that they asked him “Do you still think you’re as good as us?” or something along those lines. He replied yes, and that is why they shot him.
And when Emmett’s mother had the open casket funeral, many white people told her it was not her son, but rather another boy, and she did not have the right to make such a fuss. She said she wanted an open casket funeral so that “people can see what those white ******** did to my son”
When looking at this case, you need to understand the Emmett, from the North, did not know what it was like in the South, and it was his naivity, and the racial intolerance of the South at this time, that lead to his death.
I’m not saying America is a bad place. It was not a nice place for those who were not white until about the 1970s, and I personally believe that there are injustices that happened that should not have happened to anyone. It wasn’t until Birmingham, in which American police set police dogs and fire hoses on young children who were protesting, that they had to take action.
I did American history in high school (I am Australian), along with German, Russian, and Australian. And I have to say that no country is perfect, but when it comes to hate crimes, America is quite up there. I am not personally attacking America, it just angers me some of what isn’t said on this site, and some of what is.
September 21st, 2008 at 5:13 am
holy shit you ignorant *****… you make all white people sad… how can you live your life hating people based on there skin color… and just to let you know i gaurentee the only thing different between you and someone with a different skin color is that your brain has a large amount of brain damage.
life is to short to hate, so love thy neighbor. and regardless of what actually happened the fact that those ***** said they did kill him for 4000 dollars is reason enough to castrate everyone who lives in the south and who has similar ideals
September 21st, 2008 at 7:31 am
Two generations prior to this event, actions such as this were commonplace. Two generations later and the ethical members of humanity are aghast at the incident’s savagery. This is how society matures. It’s never right to destroy a life that isn’t yours.
This is how civilized people treated each other for thousands of years. High time it ******* stops.

The body is so bloated and disfigured because of the river. Bodies that are found in water are often disfigured, depending on exposure time.

Some of the comments on this photo made me sick to my stomach. What the hell is wrong with you Tor?.
This is a sad photo, but i suppose in a cruel way it marks the rights battles of the African American people
September 22nd, 2008 at 3:54 am
THERES A REASON PEOPLE’S SKIN IS DIFFERENT COLORS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thought i would just add this. Turns out there is this thing in your skin called PIGMENT, it acts to protect you from the sun and cancer at the same time as allowing you to absorb vitimin D and other important nutrients.
So if you live in…lets say England were its cold and basically always overcast you have LIGHT skin so you can absorb what you need without fear of getting killed by sun. If you live in Africa were the whole place is basically a desert the body has MORE pigment….so to survive, hense most people from hot sunny places have DARK skin.
Wow, your right. There is a reason. You waste of space
September 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm
so much hate out there. Isn’t there enough already? Does it make you feel big?Important? Like you might actually BE somebody for dragging around such a huge sack of hate? Mi sorry fi you. May JAH Almighty, in HIS wisdom, have mercy on you. Enough is enough.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
As much as the story of Emmett Till makes me sick to my stomach at the ability of people to commit such heinous acts of inhumanity upon their own race, the statements of some…some of you are so underdeveloped in terms of your social assumptions it is just sad. I thought education for all people below the age of 10 was compulsory in the “Western” world. It just goes to show, what separates humans from other animals are our ability to perpetrate premeditated acts of violence based on irrational fear and hatred. This picture and the irrational, racial dialogue that followed, begs a revision of “man” as a rational being!!

I think comments on this page really need to be moderated. Either people or trolling… or…well lets just assume they are trolling because the thought that people actually believe the sick crap they are willing to type anonymously on a computer makes my stomach turn.
This isn’t intelligent discussion or debate. And it detracts from the images and story. I say toss it for the sake of sanity and faith in humanity.
September 25th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
@WTF….screw you you dirty pinko commie ****** *****! You must be some kinda friggin foreigner.
September 26th, 2008 at 3:38 am
I thought it was widely considered that the common ancestor to everybody was an australopitecus from Africa (Lucy) and that we all have evolved from them, so we white have lost skin color, etc.
I don’t have any problem with that, although some creacionist whites might: all religions in the world are a people invention that have inflicted terrible damage to other people through history. KKK were extremist christians, bin Laden is a radical muslim, the medieval Pope was a… All religions should be banned.
September 26th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
That’s a bit extremist atheist, don’t you think? Yes, religion has caused more than its fair share of problems, but many perfectly innocent people in the world depend on it. Not to mention that banning a /belief/ would be a very, very hard thing to implement. Not all Christians are at the level of the KKK (which causes more problems by being a white supremacist group, rather than a radically religious group), and bin Laden is /one/ Muslim. What about the hundreds of thousands of other Muslims who have done nothing wrong? And yes, many of the Popes and monasteries were often corrupt, but so much of our modern world was shaped by religion. Rooting from the basis of religion came so much that we now have, that perhaps would have never come without it. Think a little bit. Religion’s not all bad.
Racism /is/ all bad. There aren’t many moments in history when racism was ever a good thing- I suppose it could be argued that America would have been drastically different without the slave trade, but probably for the better- it’s the remnants of the slave trade and other such customs that cause the fear, hatred, and discrimination associated with racism. Reading articles like this always dampens my outlook, and seeing the foolish, ungrounded comments that some people make is even worse. Once upon a time, this was standard fare. That’s horrible, but I can deal with it and am willing to move on. The fact that people /still/ say things like that, /still/ blatantly insult, flame, hurt others that differ so /trivially/ is just… terrible. Is it because you’re afraid of what you don’t know? Is dark skin so grotesque to you that you feel the need to hurt other people to lighten your heart?
Oh, and what-is-your-name who uses ‘foreigner’ and ‘******’ as insults- that’s just as bad. I suppose a dark skinned, homosexual Frenchman would be like, the epitome of horror to you? I’d really like to see what the world would be like if the tables were turned, and all of those suppressed minorities out there were at the top. How would you feel?
I don’t suppose you can imagine it. Pity- it might horrify you so much that it would knock that prejudice right out of your little spongiform mind.
-Yes, I do understand that religion ties in with other prejudices quite a lot, and hatred between religions is quite common. I’m rather afraid that my hopes are a bit stronger than my capability of dealing with reality. I don’t mind religion, as in ‘I worship so-and-so,’ or ‘I believe this or that.’ I just wish the hatred would stop.
Damn it, world peace just won’t work, will it?

September 26th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
As I read through this thread I was utterly shocked by the statements made by some. it is a marvel that in this day and age there are still white people who are racist to the core. This is 2008 people! Let it be remembered that on August 28, 1955 near Money, Mississippi a murder occurred–a murder of a human being. He was not only a human being, but a mere boy. His race is irrelevant. There are reports that his penis was cut off and stuffed in his mouth. I try to imagine in my mind the unspeakable tortures that this boy endured on that day. The brutality of this crime is almost inconceivable. Racial hatred is satanic. For those of you on this thread who are decent human beings and who are outraged by the taunts of those who are dead to the claims of natural affection, regard them not. let them have their carnival for it will only be for a season I assure you. But one day, all these injustices and cruelties will have their end, leaving God who will one day be sole judge and executioner. He has not forgotten. He remembers everything with terrible exactness, and very soon, he will emerge from his place of hiding to punish the inhabitants of the earth for the multitude of their brutalities. God is going to make America pay for its long centuries of crime against the black race. And on that terrible day, the whole world will view the dark records of man’s cruelty against his fellow man, and will finally see for the first time what horrible crimes occurred in that barn on that infamous day–August 28, 1955. Oh that you all only knew what is soon to come upon this world–global tyranny and enslavement of ALL! Fools, fools! and when it comes its going to come with such BLINDING force! This war between black and white have been a diversion to keep the populace distracted until that terrible hour. It is hard to conceive the horrors that is soon to come upon the inhabitants of this world. No pen can conceive it, but If you want to have an idea, then you need to know go back in history–in Jerusalem in AD 70. That terrible outbreak was but a faint shadow of what is to come upon the whole world. Get Ready! Get ready! Get ready!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
First I want to say that the death of Emmitt Till is such a scar on the United States and should not be forgotten. I am surprised at the hateful and racists comments I have read here but, I am thankful that the picture is posted and that we will not forget how inhumane and how mean we can be to each other. For those who leave hateful comments, I feel very sorry for you.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I just wanted to add that this picture is testament to hatred in all its forms all over the world.
The Holocaust, Srebenica, Guantanamo, Sudan, the Israel-Palestinian conflict, all have produced photos that should have changed the world but haven’t. Look at the world today, still amassed with irrational fear and hatred, legitimised by interpretations of the Bible, the Koran or by outdated theories such as Creationism, Social evolution, and extremism.
But I am sure not one of these thoughts crossed this young mans mind as he was tortured and then murdered. His story makes me sad to my soul.
September 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
To all of you have so nicely composed your words of disdain for your fellow man: You have conveniently forgotten that what lies beneath the skin is the same. We have the same organs. We bleed the same color. We’re a bunch of M&Ms, and the next time you thoughtless idiots want to compare the supremacy of skin color, just remember what lies beneath.
September 27th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
those pathetic excuses for human beings who write these hateful things in the comments will burn in everlasting hellfire and be punished eternally by a vengeful and wrathful God who will torment them forever and cut off their penises and stuff them in their Godless mouths. Praise God for his infinite mercy!
September 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am
its awful, i cant beleive that sb could do such a these ths.
i regret and i think it should be considered more.
September 28th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
To all the people who are saying this story is not true.
******* RACIST.
WHY TRY TO MAKE THE STORY LOOK DIFFERENT IF THIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY TRUTH. BLABLABLA.
THEY JUST BEAT THEM UP FOR NOTHING AND THAT’S THE TRUTH. IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH THEN HANG YOURSELF UP INSTEAD OF MAKING YOUR OWN CONSPIRACY’S.
-The Truth is the truth and nothing else then the truth is true.
September 30th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

On a lighter note….
My sign language teacher once told me this and it made me smile. Reading this article reminded me of it.
“We all are different shades on the outside but take a knife 5 inches down and we’re all the same.”
My hearts breaks a little because it’s such a pretty thought, I just wish the whole world thought so as well.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
what would the world look like if there was only one kind of flower? What would the world look like if there was only one kind of tree, What would Fall look like if all the leaves turn to just one color? and speaking of color, there are so many!: blue, green, red, yellow, purple, orange, pink, and the subtle gradations in between. Suppose there was only one kind of vegetable to eat? How would you feel if the only vegetable that was available is the broccoli? Nature is beautiful because of the endless variety of flowers, plants, and trees, and their various colors, and the various fruits, vegetables, and nuts to eat. Look at the animal kingdom–the variety is almost innumerable. And what about the various body of waters–rivers, lakes, oceans, seas, ponds, wetlands, streams, canals, and straits. And what about the forces of nature, storms in particular? there are varieties–cyclones, blizzards, hailstorms, sandstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and the tsunami. And the heavenly bodies?–stars, quasars, galaxies, planets, moons, constellations, and it does not end here, because there is so much that we finite beings will never know about the rest of the universe. We are an atom compare to this vast universe. And the different seasons, have we forgotten them?: Fall, winter, Spring, and summer, each are different and possess a certain atmosphere that appeals to our various sensibilities. We love Spring because it means renewal, we love Summer for its warmth, we love winter because it is cleansing and pure, and we love Fall because it promises that all that is old will be made new again. And the process continues again and again , year after year, decade after decade, and centuries after century. God, in His wisdom knows us because He made us. He knows that we have needs, and He makes sure that He didn’t make this earth a boring place. God is a great God, an infinite God, a loving God, and a God who loves variety. So it is with the human race. First and foremost–male and female. Even among a particular race there are differences; Germans look a little different from the English; the French look a little different from the Russians; the Swedish look a little different from Americans; The Italians look a little different from the Spaniards; black Americans look a little different from the Africans; West Indians look a little different from black Americans; Jamaicans look a little different from the Haitians; and among the Africans, the Ugandans look a little different from the Senegalese, the Ethiopians look a little different from the Somalians, and on and on and on; and what about the the various languages of the world?–all a testament to the beauty of variety. God loves variety, and He does not make mistakes, and anyone who hates another group of people because of their race and color that person is lacking in wisdom. Love is the governing principle of God’s kingdom, without which there would be no peace and harmony. This is why this world is the way it is. There is no peace because hate is a discordant cord in the universe. Hate is a principle that is completely at variance with the original principle–love. If you have hate your fellow man, then you are not on God’s side; your god is the original murderer–the devil. The original principle will prevail. And all who are at variance with it will cease to exist on the day of final accounts.

If you really feel the need to comment, you should immerse yourself in the historical facts behind the story of the late Emmet Till. The paragraphs trailing the picture above are there for a reason; to allow its audience to understand what those who were involved had to endure. Place yourselves in the role of his mother, his cousin, his uncle, and then see if you can repeat your comments without a trace of guilt. It may not come now, when you write it, or days later, but one day all you bloaks will receive an enormous wake up call when you lose someone you love.
October 6th, 2008 at 2:13 am
And you wonder why the US is tearing itself apart. When this amount of hatred is mixed with this amount of ignorance, any wonder you’re losing the mantle of most powerful nation on earth…
October 6th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
And you wonder why other countries hate us? Look at what you people are saying? Who the hell decided white people are more important then everybody else? The sheer stupidity of these comments astound me. I am white, but I know a ton of people of other races that are better than I am at a lot of things. I love being an American, but some of the people that live here need to stop and think about what they say.
October 6th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I agree that comments on this page should most definitely be moderated. In addition, some very intelligent persons hail from Mississippi of all colors. I happen to be white and not a “hick” nor am I an “imbred”. Contrary to the belief of those in the Northern and Western United States, we have become quite civilized here in Mississippi. Yes, we do talk with a drawl just as much as y’all talk with a crisp yankee accent. Please take consideration in what you say to others. We are all humans regardless of our race, religions, or where we call home.
October 6th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
dear christian nation,
please post the location of your congregation so I can join your services and bring you a few “presents” your white church folks will enjoy…might bring a few palestinian sinners with me to help me do the deed…err…to have you teach them the gospel…

TRY OPENING YOUR MINDS A LITTLE, U MIGHT FIND LIFE MORE ENJOYABLE! BLACKS, WHITES, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE….YOUR MINDS ARE THE ONLY THING THAT SETS U APART….. Try travelling the world a bit and see how happy everyone else lives!

blacks will soon be gone, as aids takes its deadly toll on their black asses. If it doesnt do the job we will engineer something better, make no mistake.

If you could distill all of the comments contained on this site, you could probably melt down both Polar icecaps. Behind the safety of the Internet, we savagely demean and degrade our fellow human. I’m not surprised. I’m just aware of my own desire to move toward better relations rather than worse ones. Dewy-eyed? Sappy? Dangerously out of touch? If I had the stomach to wade through the dross and outright cankerous comments to find the pearls of human kindness and empathetic connection, well, I guess I would leave want to thank those humans for fighting the trend. As Walt Kelley once wrote through his cartoon creation Pogo, “we have met the enemy, and he is us.”

I can’t believe there is still a KKK around here.
We’re still surrounded by racist idiots.

Variety is vital for a society to function soundly and effectively: economically, it protects against monopolies while upholding the tenets of free-trade; politically, it often ensures a democratic state and staves off dictatorship; socially, it provides disparities in consumers which brings the pen full circle for variety in consumerism means the demand for variety in produce which equates to a need for variety in economy. I say all of this under the hopeful pretense that you, my fellow commenters, understand and acknowledge the faults in monopolies, dictatorships, and an oppressed society. With all of this said, and in light of the rise in blended persons and families, I think variety in all forms needs to be accepted; for those who do not will, simply put, be caught behind the times and become unrelevant — socially and otherwise. And if one thing is necessary for an activist, whether motives evil or pure, it is to be relevant.
And underscoring the scientific credits to why different skin colors exist (thank you Rahima, an enlightened mind amongst many fallen), we have to acknowledge why there are differences for said skin colors in society. Just as Africans adapted to their sunlight exposure, Asians to the frequent sandstorms, and Anglos to mild climates, skin colors have adapted socially in accordance with laws (on both the governmental and street levels.) To the individual noting that blacks “commit 85 percent of the crime and only make up 15 percent of the population” (a figure that is wildly skewed because of your probable exclusion of mixed-race persons), you, like much of our national population and sadly, governement, are not harping on the problem itself but rather the symptom of. Crime is often committed, white, black, or purple, because of poverty, oppression, and a sense of inequality. I ask you, have you ever found yourself impoverished? oppressed? or left with a genuine and overbearing sense of inequality? Without a tangible link to any one of those existences, you simply CANNOT understand the crossroads they bring. I myself am an urban white female with mostly minority friends who live below the means that I am accustomed to. I grew up having sleepovers at friends’ project housing, helping feed their newborn babies at 16, contributing extra cash for bills, but at the end of the day, I went back to my two-parent middle-class home. No matter how much I saw, I never lived it. And I think we can all attest to the differences between actor and audience.
Finally, I would just like to say to everyone that although this and many other forums draw the ignorant, the uneducated, and the stubborn (though I would argue that much of our nation is comprised of this population), it and the voices it generates of every kind should NEVER be moderated. For, it is not the evil forces in this world that will foster our demise. Rather, it is the complacency, those who take no stand, who flounder in shallow water, and sway in soft wind that will breed the biggest of blunders. Admirable is anyone with enough devotion to a cause, no matter how disdainful I may perceive it to be, to put their person, their voice behind it.
So to those who haven’t yet, have a voice. Be a voice. And be heard. The world is too malleable to not. And afterall, variety is the spice of life.

There are a lot of people posting hateful words. Makes me wonder what happened to them to make them that way… Babies aren’t born hateful. It’s what happens to them afterward that changes their outlook. Make peace with your past. Follow Jesus’ words and love they neighbor as thyself.

Thank you Christian Nation for supplying these people with the real aspect of Christianity:acceptance. The earlier post by the other Christian nation is a disgrace to your religion and understandably angers those who don’t believe into making assumptions about Christians. I deeply appreciate that you stepped up to defend the religion and stand for what it really means.
I will not comment on the users who believe their ignorant thoughts, because their minds are full of intolerance and there is no changing that but someday regardless if it’s in this life or the next there actions and words of hate will catch up to them. There is no need for me to speak to someone with a closed mind.
October 12th, 2008 at 2:14 am
If i were black i would hate white people too with some of the disgusting comments that come out of their mouths
NO ONE is doing their race or religion a favour here

I am from Croatia (that’s in Europe) meaning I’m as white as I can be. And I’m sure that color of our skin is different for reason. I just don’t know why are there still individuals who think that white skin is better than the others? And for all of you who quit school, the biggest crime was killing native Americans (done by white people). Do you think that they should kill all you white people there?
Come on, get a life.

Very well put about those awful comments. Unfortunately there are people out there thinking we want to hear what they have to say but when it comes to those types of comments they are not needed ! They are very uneducated and small little people. Thankfully a lot of people out there have kind hearts and do not have hateful words.

My friends and I were looking at Emmetts pictures and we just think that this is plain HORRIBLE and DISGUSTING for this to happen and plus we are of the age of 14 and we could just imagine one of our male friends/family being attacked like that and its sad. Emmetts family if you’re reading this although it was a long time ago (1955) we feel for you and we just want to say SORRY and thank you for the picture of him and now it might help so no one will do such a thing like this.

@love, #49
Hon, I’m on your side of the anti-racism issue, but please get some of your facts straight.
There is no German or English “race.” They are all European, separated only by political and linguistic lines. Similarly with the Swedes. Not really sure what you mean by comparing them with Americans, as the latter are really just so many Europeans and Asians and Africans, unless you mean Native Americans?
Similarly with the Ethiopians, Senegalese, and Ugandans. They’re all Africans.
So while I appreciate your attempt at celebrating diversity, let’s do it right, okay?

That’s horrible man,, I don’t understand how anyone could do such a thing to a person.
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 am
Ok. I just sat here after reading the most horrific story, one I had never known about. I sat in horror and cried tears for that poor young boy. Then expecting to read comments similar to my reaction, you know supporting words for those of us who have hearts and open minds.. but instead running into more of hate and just pure ignorance. I know racism is existent in the world, but that does not make it acceptable. I am typing this with much control, and I feel so sick from readin those comments that just tore into different races, and stole the point of the story away and buried it alive. To those of you on here who chose to spread hate to this boy, and his ancestors, or any of us.. of any racial background, please do us all a favor and research your own background.. you’ll find that it may have a little something to do with many countries, and even a continent other than North America.. oh wait I’m sorry “Spics” were hated on here as well..hmm. America is connected to other countries incase you forgot. Africa is part of all of our backgrounds. I find you all offensive, even when those of you tried to defend love, and equality and had harsh words for the people who were racist.. you guys were too. calling them names just spread the hate, and had nothing to do with love. I can’t believe that such a tragic story that I thought would evoke a good connection between people who have evolved from all different races.. but instead it has brought upon religious and purification issues. I ask God, or whoever you believe in when the hell will people stop.

October 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Wow! What a world we live in if we can’t even see what is right in front of us. Bad mouthing, and cussing, trying to get an ignorant, brainless, worthless individuals out here to be able to respond to the subject at hand! Use your words, get your point across without having to paint a mental picture of how dumb some of you people out there really are! What ever your home life was or is, grow up! This is a sad story. What happened if this happened to you white, black, brown, yellow, if people said these horrible things about you! Soon judgement day will come, I am glad I am not you people who are making horrible comments!
October 23rd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I am not of christian faith but I do find a part of their scripture intriguing. The event where the children of God sought to reach the Heavens and be closer to God and built the Tower of Babble. (sp?) In his deterrence of this attempt he confused the languages and the tower construction came to a halt. People could not understand one another and frustration sent the people across the earth.Though there are no doubt discrepancies in my recount; it is the gist of the story. Of all things, myths, stories, scriptures and theories…I find this Biblical story to be the most profound. With different languages come different accounts of how things must be, how the perspective of faith must be upheld. As stated before I am not of any Christian faith, but I do find that The Tower of Babble would have a very valuable teaching. One sight and one mind makes for a devastating future. To be consciously different is to be human. We became too similar to thrive and progress. Thus the change and evolution of society. That is the truth of humanity. Be strong in your ideals, whatever your beliefs. As a conscientious being we have been given the thought capability to think, believe, worship and live differently if not completely differently than out fellows of the human kind on this planet.
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Simply disgusting. I am almost ashamed to be white after seeing things such as this. I hope Till takes his revenge in the after life if there is such a thing. Forgivness for something like this is just not an option.
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Hey all of the smart people here, you know who you are, why are you still replying to comments from people like Tor, Arm, Waddup and Christian nation? I’ve been looking at the pictures and at times reading the comments (honestly, most times I just rolled my eyes and went back to HOME, I’m just tired of pointless hatred) and in every picture it’s the same thing over and over.
So their comments haven’t been erased yet…. can we pretend they’ve been? It would save everyone a lot of grief. I understand the indignation, I was pretty upset at first, too, but what is the point in listening to them? It’s not like they’re going to change their minds or opinions because we get mad at them. Let’s just give them a sympathetic tap on the top of their heads and carry on with intelligent discussion please.
Though, hey Barbados Guy I’m white and I’m on your side =’( what’s with the lynching comment? I’m not mad at you for it ’cause I know where you’re coming from, but it did sadden me because now for some reason I am to blame for what other whites did. Darn, I’m Mexican! What do I have to do with anything? (Yes, a white Mexican, born and living in Mexico… red haired and green eyed, actually, for those who believe in stereotypes).
And for the record, get it into your heads that America is a CONTINENT, not a country. Stop calling people from the US ‘Americans’, please. I doubt Europeans would like it if only the British were referred to as Europeans, for instance.
October 23rd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
@ Taryn
I couldn’t agree more. from North America to the Great Horn Spoon in South America…EVERYONE in between are ‘Americans’. The U.S. has so many self righteous people in it that the world has decided the United States is America as a whole. It always gets me when I hear…american this american that…I mean what American are you referring to? BE SPECIFIC PEOPLE.
October 24th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Uhhh I so feel the love here ppl. It’s so obvious why the world won’t come to an end. -.-
But hey…I’m an optimist…the world will be a better place….when humans are extinct. Let’s go for it! We are doing well so far!
October 24th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Omg… this is pretty extreme, why are humans so fucked up…
October 25th, 2008 at 12:48 am
This page calls into doubt the entire idea of giving people space to post comments anonymously. How can we have a true argument when clearly positions and ideas are being put forth that would never be defended face to face.
I’m glad that the kind of historical information has found a place online, but clear the comment section hasn’t contributed anything to towards a greater understanding of the event itself.
October 25th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Welcome to the America! (2008…)
October 27th, 2008 at 2:02 am
Wow, and Americans say, that the biggest american values are freedom, equality, human rights et cetera… so this is it! the american dream? hm…. i’m shocked…
October 27th, 2008 at 2:55 am
Oh wow - what to say.
Absolutely gobsmacked…
What a different world it would be if all of us had consideration for others - instead of worrying about what Im entitled to…
October 27th, 2008 at 3:39 am
well all jump on me, I can not believe just how racist the world still is, Im german and got called nazi in the 70’s. funny considering that I were born in 1970… but then looking at some of the comments posted here, well there are those of you who would consider that a compliment… and those of you are sick…. im sure that you agreed with the vietnam/gulf wars…. just cos your govt. pres. are war mongering idiots, along with a few% country hicks, im so shocked, especailly when most of your roots come from europe, england and ireland especially, thank christ I have no regard nor respect for the usa, been there twice, hope to goodness I never have to go again, love the country, hate the handfull of biggoted, inadequate, extream right wing fascists, who made my 12 month stay there unpleasant.
ultimately, it is a shame that such a picture and story have incited so many god awful statements, but then those of you with that attitude are quite simply dumb unhappy creatures who have led a very sad life, the sooner god takes your sorry asses to his judgment the better…. oh and just another, jesus, born middle east, you know by the side of africa…. he was more a black man than white…. just take that thought to bed with you, and if jesus was black, what do you think god is,…. sorry but that thought just made me grin…..
October 27th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Sometimes I am embarrassed to be from the South. The story of Emmett Till in its entirety marks one of those times. The comments from people like “tor” and the others just add fuel to the fire. Let it be known that we are not all the same down here; there are some of us who have morals. I would like nothing more than to be seen for who I am individually than for where I am from.
October 27th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I am a 42 year old white man.. And in 8 days I will be voting for the country’s 1st African American, I.E. BLACK President.
Put that in your cap and smoke it.

October 27th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
As a white man I would have loved to sat on that jury and conviceted the S.O.B.’S responsible for Emmit’s murder. By the way the persons posting unkind and hateful statements are the same persons who join neo-nazi groups or the defunct KKK. Most if not all have very low IQ’S as well as low self esteem. They are idicatitive of a small segment of people from all over the world who want to step on someone when they are on the bottom rung morally and/or intellectually. Get a life, love someone and drop that ton of hate you’re dragging around.
October 27th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
JACKSON, Miss. - A sign marking the site where Emmett Till’s battered body was pulled from a river in 1955 has been ripped down by vandals, authorities said.
The sign posted on a road near the Tallahatchie River was among eight that were erected after the county adopted a resolution last year apologizing to Till’s family because an all-white jury acquitted two white men of murdering Till for whistling at a white woman.
October 27th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
people, if this happ to someone you know, and love, then what? i’m from jersey, and ive been around the us, the south is still so racist. i see racism up here too. we should be careful cause our youth is heavily “influenced” by pop culture even the south, just look at the music trends. hispanics are growing at a high rate as well soon whites may not be majority. i’m spanish myself, and minorities need to stop abusing the state ran services and be there for their kids, teach, discipline, and just love them, cause i see more white families doing it right than any others. i will be very disgusted with this great country if mccain wins based on racism ,obama will help people who make less than 250k. im voting obama, i hate republicans who are middle class like me i don’t get it. why the *** do you want rich people getting a better deal than you, you’re so stupid.

you see, maybe white people are better then blacks, probabally not - but generally some scientists say we have smarted brains. However, racism is a sign of insecurity, and if whites were ‘better’ then blacks, why would they be so insecure about blacks. That makes me angry that white people, like that cracker above, completely degrade the white nation by being scared and insecure of blacks - Its pretty pathetic. I mean, I may state the obvious, but that doesn’t mean I hate blacks, or anything like that - I think this crime was extremely foul and evil and makes me cringe, but whyh are white people so insecure.
October 28th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Taryn, woah, woah, woah - there is only one America, and your statist governments down in Southern America do not have American exceptionalism, and don’t say you do. There is, and will only be, one America. If you don’t like the colonies, you can giiiiiiiiiit out.

This is probably the most unintelligent thread I have ever seen on the web. How 50% of you even know how to use the computer is beyond me.
October 29th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
i’m of the newest generation and i’m shocked that my grandpa, from NC, won’t vote because he’s a democrat but won’t vote for a black man. it’s insane. i only read the first few comments, and the hatred therein is frightening. as a non-white american who considers herself a southerner, i’m ashamed and more than a little scared
October 30th, 2008 at 6:26 am
@ Northern Bull
Maybe you need to look at a map of the AMERICA(S) We are NORTH America…there is also South AMERICA and Central AMERICA. Simple and to the point we need to refer ourselves as such, North Americans (NOT to be confused with Native Americans, they are indigenous from Alaska to the southern tip of Chile). You self centered self righteous worm.
October 30th, 2008 at 9:51 am
First and foremost this is one of the more horrendous events to have occurred in the civil rights era. There is no, and never will be an excuse, reason or justification for the torture, murder and mutilation of a 14 year old.
Now, addressing the issues in this thread that I can’t resist commenting on.
1. The racially motivated responses.
Its annoying to most, hell, infuriating to most. That said, why dignify it with a response? To respond is to fuel the fire. You are not going to change anyones mind who feels that strongly. To say such a person is ignorant is to understate dramatically. Ignorance, basically is not knowing any better. Ignorance can be remedied with knowledge. You are dealing with someone who has made up there mind completely and utterly. No amount of teaching, preaching or urging will change these peoples minds. Many of the comments I have read have the suggestion “I thought America had changed.” America has changed. 2008 is nothing like 1958. And, while racist messages will never change, the amount of people listening and has. Let them hate. Who cares? Let them try and spread their message, it isn’t going to save them at this point. To claim that racism isn’t strong isoolish but I think to claim that it is weaker then it has ever been in this country is accurate. Everyday that goes by there are less and less people listening to this dreck, it is only going to get better. How many people do you really think are sitting around reading this bullshit and suddenly start thinking “Yeah, there right!” Frankly, I think there are a great deal more who are just disgusted and pissed off by it.
2. Suddenly ashamed.
I am a white man. I am a southern white man. I am not religious. I am not ashamed of any of these things. You should not be ashamed to be white because of the actions of your ancestors. What control do you have over that? You should not be ashamed you were born South of Maryland because there were slaves there 150 years ago. How did it have anything to do with you as an individual? My grandmother was a horrible racist and an all around terrible person. Am I ashamed of her, sure, but just becuase she was a bigot doesn’t mean I need feel shame. You shouldn’t be ashamed of what you are no matter what you look like or where you are from. If you are a muderer or a rapist or a thief, then yeah, shame on you. If you are an honest person who does your best, treats everyone fairly then why should you be ashamed? You didn’t kill Emmit Till. You aren’t being a racist. You need not be sorry for that.
3. Sweeping generalizations
The shame I spoke of above is most often caused by generalizations. Not all white people from the South live in trailers, **** their sisters, eat mayonaise sandwichs and hate black people. Just as not all black people are criminals, lazy, better at sports, and hate white people. Not all Americans are overweight, out of shape war-mongers. For **** sakes, STOP it with the generalizations.
Things HAVE changed. This is not the country it was. America is a great place. I do not have the effrontery to claim it is the greatest place on Earth or that even this is the greatest it has ever been, it is nevertheless an amazing place to live and be.
October 30th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Every last one of you ignorant intolerant ******** are going straight to hell. For the record you idiot…it’s a black and whitel photo. Apparently you didn’t stay in school long enough to learn your colors you inbred piece of shit.
October 30th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
All of you ignorant racists need to get a life. People are people, they are different colors because that is how they were BORN! They cannot change that, so shut the hell up and I hope your racist asses get ******* lynched in the near future. You ******* deserve it.
Peace out *******.
and for the record IM WHITE. so dont give me and shit. Africans are people, Asians are people, Europeans are people. COLOR DOESNT ******* MATTER.

It is interesting that ‘Christian Nation’ presumes that the mark of Cain was one of Blackness when we know today that human life originated in Africa. Given that caucasians are the only non-pigmented people on the planet and that Caananites are portrayed as almost albino white, it kind of makes one wonder who was the murderer and who was marked. Sti
