Earthrise

The late adventure photographer Galen Rowell called it “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.” Captured on Christmas Eve, 1968, near the end of one of the most tumultuous years the U.S. had ever known, the Earthrise photograph inspired contemplation of our fragile existence and our place in the cosmos. For years, Frank Borman and Bill Anders of the Apollo 8 mission each thought that he was the one who took the picture. An investigation of two rolls of film seemed to prove Borman had taken an earlier, black-and-white frame, and the iconic color photograph, which later graced a U.S. postage stamp and several book covers, was by Anders.

    How come there’s no stars?

  2. Dan Says:

Because the camera exposure was set for the light levels of the Earth and Moon in this shot, and the stars are comparatively too dim to show up on film. If the camera had been set to expose for the light level of the stars correctly, the Earth would have been over-exposed and would be “blown-out” on film.

  3. Arkz Says:

that and it doesnt help that the earth is much brighter then the moon

  4. Tor Says:

arkz!! sun shining on earth!!!! comprehend????

  5. R.H. Golem Says:

Does the sun ever shine on the moon? What does the sun look like from outer space? (It’s always dark, why?)

  6. heather Says:

@RH Actually, the sun shining on the moon is the reason we can see it at all. The moon emits no light of its own, but the rays of light reflecting off of the moon’s surface is bright enough to be seen. And things are always dark because light only travels so far before they lose energy. The darkness is pretty much empty space between celestial bodies. Thanks for asking intelligent questions. I’ve been browsing through these photos and getting irritated with the comments.
This is one of my favorite space pictures.

  7. bazmor Says:

this photo, to the best of my knowledge, should be shown at 90 degrees; the original (square format, not rectangular) was taken as the orbiting module came around the moon, which should be on the right of the photo. the earth should be a vertical semi-sphere, to the centre of the frame. Apparently NASA released the photo on its side for “aesthetic” reasons!

    Is this true?

  8. bluefox9er Says:

the most iconic photograph ever taken of all time…

  9. LookAgain Says:

    Heather says
“And things are always dark because light only travels so far before they lose energy. The darkness is pretty much empty space between celestial bodies.”
You might find these two statements are not correct.
I agree with you about other comments on other photo’s on this site, we (humans) have a lot of growing up to do before we can take ourselves off this planet and infest the rest of the universe.

  10. bazmor Says:

“photons” may be causing the con-fusion. though ‘the darkness is pretty much empty space thing’ (although it is not!!!) i agree with; unless were getting into gravitons and anti matter etc. in which case apollo 8 is…the moon is…cheese? what do other mice think?

    is this comment relevant?

yes. the image was turned on its side. i am jerry (bazmor)

  11. John Says:

That’s another HandMade Pics from “MoonHoax”.

  12. bazmor Says:

just look at it the way the photo was taken
    just once
with the image on its side, 90 degrees with the moon’s surface to the right
imagine the astronaut rounding the moon, what he saw in a vertical frame

one of the most iconic photos in history…? sure

but also a cliche, a lie

funny thing is - from an aesthete’s pov - it a better photo when viewed sideways

although this may be just because it is now, in a way, fresh

    moonhoax?

    say cheese

    jerry

Omg, only one comment from Tor.

  14. Tor Says:

one more now. :D and not even one of those copycats who infests the commentarys, the real deal speaking…

i think the realness of this picture looks fake thou. i mean it’s rather rad in space

I remember the day this photo changed the world, I was waiting for Santa on the livingroom sofa, it was getting close to midnight when I finally realized he wasnt coming, I had made a nice batch of cookies with the help of my mother too, they were dutch brownie cookies and I put some of those little red sugar sparkles on them to make them look pretty. my dad said he would eat them with his lunch if Santa didnt want them. I also put out a glass of cold milk but it was unseasonaby warm that winter , the pond out in our horse pasture didnt even freeze that year so we could go ice skating but my Mom did let me have my friends Carol and Cherie come over for a sleepover, any way, I remember when Mr Borman took this picture and that was right about the time everything changed for me, at least as far as believing in Santa goes. I was horribly dissapointed, thats why the memory stands out so clearly now even after all these years. I had expected him to bring me a new pair of ice skates but like I said before that year the pond out in the horse pasture didnt even freeze over so later thats why my dad said him and my mom decided that I was getting to be too old for Santa especially since I wouldnt even be able to use them unless they drove me all the way to town to the ice skating rink and anyway we were in a recession that year and they dint have much money since my dad lost his job at the factory and we had to sell the eggs from our chickens down at Mr Webbers market but I wish they had gotten them and driven me to town because that year I had a crush on this boy, Tommy Sullivan he worked at the gas station over by Cooper street and my friend sally said he was usually at the ice skating rink every night but I didnt get to go and then he met that darn Samantha Hargraves I didnt like her because she already wore a brassiere and they started going steady and that pretty much spoiled that whole year for me and it all started with this picture.

  21. Arm Says:

God! I cant believe you go on and on about your pathetic life…

  22. Kat Says:

Doris. That’s a psychological condition. Attaching negative instances in your life to something not alive, unable to defend itself, or give logic. Instead of just accepting that your life, at that period in time, SUCKED and that’s all there was to it. It didn’t START with that picture. And God didn’t do it to you either. You probably ask “WHY GOD” all the time when something goes wrong. Don’t you? God has nothing to do with the shit that happens in life. He didn’t spend his time setting out a path for you either. Bad things happen.

  23. Doris Says:

@kat, thank goodness you came along I was about to sink into apathy but now I have a friend to talk to and get reassurance from and spend time with together, this is so cool, not like that time that stupid Betty Donavon gave my husband a blowjob in the downstairs guestroom (which I wouldnt do because I find the idea disgusting and later he said he only let her do it because I wouldnt do it but we know that cant be true because I was a good wife and gave him sex at least once a week unless I was on my period but did he ever give me thanks for all that consideration, no, I even suspected that a couple of other times he had affairs or flings or such but I could never catch him at it except of course when he was with that filthy ***** Betty with his penis in her mouth and when I opened the door she didnt even stop and he had to push her away and I never understood how she could stab me in the back like that cuz I used to be her friend and would listen to her tell over and over that stupid story about when her little brother drowned down at the lake when he fell off the inner tube and she thought it was her fault for years because he was scared to go out there so far in the lake cuz he couldnt swim but she dared him to go anyway and said he was a chicken and then he drowned and when they finally dragged up his body two days later it was all pale and pasty and funny looking like when you stay in the bathtub too long and your skin gets wrinkly and i thought it was so gross when they had an open casket funeral and anyway that was in the 6th grade)
so now I have a friend like you Kat that makes all this waiting worth while I knew that someday I would meet a friend again who would be true to me and not give my husband a blowjob.

  24. Lionel Hunter Says:

The astronauts were not the moon, all the photos were taken of the moon walk in desert. There is evidence that NASA tries to hide. They are deceive the people to collect more taxes on behalf of development space. Do not let fool!

  25. Greg Says:

    Photo incroyable. Fabuleux.

  26. Big Paddy Says:

how isit fake, my god the amount of tosh some people have spoken about these photos is unbelieveable. Its not fake the bit u can see is where the sun is shining the other bit is in darkness as it is night time on the other half of the earth u dont need a ****** science degree to work this out. Theres about 30% of ppls posts on here with some credibility and respect for a decent photo the rest are complete bullshit i suggest the ones who consider these photos fake to go fornicate urself with a rusty iron pole

  27. Arm Says:

this foto is so obviously faked, come on people use your brains!

  28. Scott Says:

this picture was taken on a NASA mission that is not well known… it was taken on an orbit around the moon, as a pre-mission to test and see if getting to the moon was feasible. An astronaut inside the orbiter took this picture out the window, so the picture was not actually taken on the surface of the moon itself. As for no stars… that is all in the film.

  29. bazmor Says:

scott: correct, apollo eight was a pre-moon landing test. Dolly and Kat, cut it out. Anyroad, i am sure the original exposure is at ninety degrees to the way NASA released it. BBC documentary about iconic pix, five/six years ago. The astronaut in question states that he took the photo in the vertical frame. That NASA released it on its side. So…As to ANYONE who believes it was all a set up, shot in a studio in a desert? You are entitled to your opinions but you are wrong. Capricorn One was a movie…

  36. Jordan Says:

Just because i feel i should….i would like to correct heather in comment 6 in saying that light does NOT lose energy as it travels. thats why we can see stars 4,075 light years away. thanks.

  37. arm Says:

only America could have made it possible to take a picture like that. eat your hearts out you foreign pieces of shit.

“LA FOTO DE NATURALEZA MÁS IMPACTANTE HECHA JAMÁS: (…) La fotografía más memorable y rompedora de esquemas de todos los tiempos (…) La tremenda respuesta que despertó esta fotografía está inextricablemente asociada a la creencia de que representa en verdad un hecho “real” del que fué testigo otro ser humano.
