Dying Soldier Hangs to Priest
Puerto Cabello naval base, Venezuela, 4 June 1962. A soldier who has been mortally wounded by a sniper clings onto navy chaplain Luis Padillo. About the image Braving the streets amid sniper fire, to offer last rites to the dying, the priest encountered a wounded soldier, who pulled himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture.

I understand this psychological manifestation, allow me to explain it in terms you laymen can understand. These pictures force a confrontation with the horrors and precariousness of the human condition. Those humans who are actually the most sensitive, the most capable of empathizing with the victims of the often macabre and generally horrible pictures here, are those therefore the most likely to be damaged psychically by the pictures, and the humor and sarcasm they display is thus seen to be a self protective measure they adopt to insulate themselves somewhat from the raw exposure to pain and overwhelming sorrow. This means you see, that waddup, gabby, doris, Tor…all of these are truly the most human amongst us, and it is we who only believe we are responding genuinely, and condemn these “jokers”, who are actually the least evolved. Do not however envy these poor individuals, they pay dearly for their deep connection to and understanding of humanity, it is incredibly difficult for them to even come here and look at these pictures, let aone be such an example to us in showing us how we too should react if we wish to develop our humanity properly, so please, display some of the understanding that you pretend to be so important to you, and try to emulate them.

To me, this picture is a representation of a truly selfless man. The priest is risking his life to ensure the soldier’s delivery into the afterlife. I am not of any denomination of a religion which worships Jesus Christ, but I respect the man for his nobility in the face of near certain death.
