Burning Monk
As a protest to the Diệm slow and unreliable reforms in Vietnam, the Buddhist monks have resorted to immolation, such as this Mahayana Buddhist monk, Thỉch Quảng Đức. Đức burned himself alive across the outskirts of Saigon, mainly because of the harshness done by the South Vietnam government to his fellow Buddhist monks.
Đức was re-cremated after he burned himself; his heart meanwhile remained in one piece, and because of this he was regarded as a Bodhisattva by the other Buddhist monks and followers. His act of self-immolation increased the pressure on the Diệm administration to implement their reform laws in South Vietnam.
More monks followed Đức’s footsteps as well, and later on in November 1963, Diệm was killed by an army coup.

It takes an amazing will to withstand the searing pain and impending death without so much as a yelp.

Many of my American history students have asked, “Why didn’t anyone save him?” If you look in the background, a line of other monks is there to keep people from interfering with the immolation. As Fleur says, the burning man’s will is an awesome thing, but so also are the wills of the monks who are watching a brother burn alive as they keep anyone from extinguishing the fire.

A very inspiring and heart wrenching photograph. I do hope that this sort of protest will never again be required to make people stop and think, even for a moment. I respect and to a degree envy his conviction, spirit and strength.
It’s strikes me as somewhat sad that any student would first ask “Why didn’t anyone save him?” and not “Why did such a thing need to happen?” or “Who was he and how did he effect the world?” Those would be questions a student should ask. Though there is that old saying “There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.” Unfortunately there are however stupid comments, and more than plenty around here. I felt I should at least post my thoughts once, and this picture jumped out at me.

This man, this monk is a very strong person. It takes real concentration and determination not to utter a single gasp or scream of pain when put on fire. I admire the monks with all my heart. These men are so strong minded, and they have honor. If I wasn’t a girl, I would become a monk asap. I don’t blame him for burning himself. It’s a highly profound photograph, but it details a complete act of stupidity. Now what does he have to say? He’s dead.
If the monk wanted to make a stand, then being alive would have been a good start. The authorities would laugh at this kind of action and say ‘Well, that’s one more done, and we didn’t have to waste ammo’.
This is not an act of humanity. It’s quite the reverse.
It shows that a human is prepared to give up a fight, whilst thinking that the fight has just begun. It’s a similar (but not the same) mentality that terrorists have.
Words are far more powerful than the extreme actions this photo depicts.
If you are whole-heartedly behind a cause, then fight for it with the help of others that are also of the same way of thinking. Don’t set yourself on fire.

I first saw this picture when I was six in 1963. It effected me then and it effects me now. I knew then that life was unfair. After reading some of these so Self-referential and Self-centered Christian rantings, I am overjoyed that i am now a practicing Buddhist. Christians that say what you have here are living IN their own created *****. I have so little pity for you that are this way. You have lost the Path. He was seating in full lotus position, which meant He was deeply in his meditation state. Everything around him was not important any more. Most monk are like that before they die, even though they’re not sacrificed them self like this case. They’re perfectly in control of their soul “a diamond soul”, the soul had no pain no suffer what’s so ever therefore the physical state was not the factor here. Enlighten monk which know exactly what have to be done before he left this life and continued for the journey next life to help people or be come one within the universe. That is Buddhisms believes.

In 1967 I was graduating high school and had been preparing for service in Viet Nam in the special services. Somehow I came across this picture. It got my attention. I began to ask myself why was America supporting a country whose own holy people felt it so imperative to burn themselves? This man altered my perspective. He changed my thinking of what realty was. I began to differentiate between patriotism and personal liberty. I was forced to make a choice. I came down hard on the side of liberty. It cost me. It was suicide. There was no other choice. This incident, this monk, this man’s actions posed questions that I could not ignore. I didn’t know it then but I had begun to think for myself. I began to hear the voice of my own conscience - pro libertate.

anyways. i just want to point out that this man is a buddist he believes in buddhism.. he is not goin to burn in hell ,Buddhism rejects concepts of a permanent self or an unchanging eternal soul. he believed after this life he could come back as a tree, a flower, etc. they do not believe in an afterlife. And in the case that he was high??? for a monk of his stature i couldn’t see it, the 5th precept states Buddhists should refrain from intoxicants which cause a loss of mindfulness. christian nation should respect this mans loyalty to his religion. who am i kidding he’ll probably just tell me im gonna burn in hell with this monk..ololol
