Burial of an unknown child. This unknown child has become the icon of the world’s worst industrial disaster, caused by the US multinational chemical company, Union Carbide.

The struggle still continues.

Soooo SAD…once again, thinking of lost dreams and desires…this poor baby will never have a future in this body. I pray for his parents. What a tragedy…innocent lives extinguished. :(

  2. Denise Says:

    This is sad

  3. Roman Says:

The Bhopal gas disaster was the worst industrial incident ever happened. The day this image was taken several thousand people have been killed the night before by the gas leaked from the Union Carbide plant. More than 100.000 people have been effected by the gas. Many of them still suffer from the results of the exposure.

But that night 1984 was really just the beginning. Union Carbide, which is now part of DOW chemical, successfully refused to cleanup Bhopal since nearly 25 years. Remaining pesticides in the Union Carbide plant now poison the water in Bhopal. Hundrets of damaged children every year are the result. Neither Dow Chemical nor the Indian government see any reason to clean up Bhopal.

This image is the most famous one in a series of image Raghu Rai shot over the years. It became the symbol of the Bhopal disaster and didn´t lose any of it´s emotional power over the years.

Find more about Bhopal on http://www.bhopal.org and http://www.bhopal.net

“caused by the US multinational chemical company, Union Carbide.”

say no more, say no more

  6. yashar یاشار Says:

someone tell me why ? وحشتناکه

  7. Roman Says:

yashar: its all about money. The plant in Bhopal was not productive any longer, so they’ve cut the budget. Less money, means less security. The result is well known. For a multinational concern like Union Carbide aka DOW chemical, the life of the Bhopalies suffering from the disaster and its legacy (water poisoning, chronic illness, damaged children, etc) is worth less than hard Dollars.

Unfortunately the image didn’t change the world much after all. Union Carbide and DOW Chemical are still unpunished for their crimes and not even the Indian government seems to interested in cleaning up Bhopal.

  19. Maria Says:

Union Carbide and Dow Chemical have never been held fully accountable for what happened that night. Between lawyers and the twisting of facts they wormed their way out of truly being called to task over the horrors that they allowed to happen in Bhopal. The pittance they were made to give the Indian government never found its way to the community that suffered the catastrophe of that night. To this day, almost 25 years later they remain uncompensated. Not only do the survivors of that chemical soup still suffer interminable hell, but the ensuing generations have been born with horrific birth defects and excruciating cancerous growths. The water and soil has never been decontaminated. We cannot allow industry to get away with treating humanity like this. If we do not inform ourselves and speak with our pockets on matters such as this, then we too are doomed to suffer the same treatment as the people of Bhopal It is only a matter of time.
Web search “Bhopal disaster” and you will find a wealth of information on this problem.

  20. ignorantamerican Says:

ah…well, here we go again. Lets say you are a little late to work, you still decide to stop at “dumping-doughnuts” for a coffee. You get back on the road and do 37mph instead of 35mph to make up time and then….you hit a pothole spilling the coffee in your lap. This causes you to careen into a van full of youth on a field trip, smashing them into the median and horrifically killing them all. Do you have to go back and clean up the bodies? Do you clean up the spilled motorfluids? No, because that’s different right?(yeah, right, be blind to it) The problem here is that accidents happen, companies (get this) want to make a profit, and sometimes the methods or people using them are unproven. I don’t support union carbide out-right, but there are too many things that I depend on being made by evil corporations to blame any single company. I guess if I were REALLY that self righteous, I would quit my job, homestead a piece of land and raise the local edible flora and fauna to survive. Call me a hypocrite….

  27. Raj Says:

Union Carbide was later acquired by Dow chemical.
Someone mentioned they would think about this when they see UC products, think about it when you see DOW products instead.

  28. two tone Says:

think about it when you see products from India, they allowed this tragedy, in fact they invited it! barbaric people, even now they are burning good Christian Churches.

  29. bloatboy Says:

Union Carbide hired an engineering firm to determine what went wrong. They assert that the cause was deliberate sabotage by an employee which overloaded all safety systems.

In any event, Union Carbide put about $12 million toward the victims right away, and established a hospital and medical trust based upon the sale of it’s stake in the plant (It owned 51%, the Indian Government the other 49%). As of 1991, that trust
was worth $100 million toward the treatment of problems. Union Carbide settled with the victims for a subsequent $470 million. Much of that money was tied up by the Indian Government until c.2005.

To my knowledge, no independent investigation was done to either corroborate or refute the sabotage allegation. If the plant was truly sabotaged by an employee with some sort of grudge, then Union Carbide is|was not the humanity hating entity everyone makes it out to be.

  30. two tone Says:

makes you wonder why everyone blames UC and no one blames the indian gov…..guess the us is an easy fall guy, people actually begrudge it when you help them out, they end up resenting you when they should grovel at your feet

  31. Brendan Says:

  34. Understanding... Says:

    twotone…
you don’t know the ground realities in India. Those churches were burned for a reason. Though I don’t agree with arson, rioting and violence what the missionaries are doing in India is also wrong.

    “The other day a missionary
descended on a famine area with money in his pocket, distributed
it among the famine-stricken, converted them to his fold, took charge of their
temple and demolished it. This is outrageous. This friend goes and gets it
demolished at the hands of the very men who only a little while ago believed
    that God was there.”——–Mahatma Gandhi.

  35. two tone Says:

@Understanding….yes, I see it now, your absolutely right, their churches should be burnt, women raped and men killed. Thanx for straightening me out on that, geez, sometimes my own ignorance is just amazing! Course they arent killing the missionaries, they are killing their fellow Indians who convert…that makes it ok in my book!

  39. Hector Says:

Very disturbing comments. waddup/koko/BooBoo and the like should really total up the collective IQ and real thought process of the group of them. My casino bet is that the total is less than a 10 year old’s shoe size. I say that, since that if you read thier blatherings, it is obvious that this is a childish rant of a young mind that does not know what is going on, or has gone on in this world. If this group consists adults, or at the very least individuals that are capable of procreation, I hope that they are sterile. That thought process is not needed in the human gene pool.

“this child will burn in hell for being unbaptised and Godless! Please people, baptise your children in the name of Jesus so they wont burn in hell”.

i dont really understand the reason behind baptism but why would a little baby who doesn’t know anything be burnt in Hell, why is your Lord so unkind to babies ;S they cannot even defend themselves becoz they do not know any better. it doesnt matter if a baby is batised or not, its just a tradition.
the Muslim tradition is called “Al kekah” the reason behind it being just a celebration of thanks to God for the blessings and the truth is everyone is born a Muslim, they were created by the One God and to Him they shall all be returned to be judged (and God is most fair and merciful).
the matter however, is that people are born into a family of another religion (other then Islam) and so are brought up by what their parents believe (religion).

  42. kp Says:

what the **** is wrong w you people how would you feel if that had been your child decieced and ppl were sayin that shit about this pic?

  61. Martyn Says:

ya’ll are red neck arses, where as i am a red azz neck.

  62. Britainy Says:

Barbie, I hope you die a painful death for that comment. It’s not a freaking doll you ******. You can tell from a picture what something is made of? WOW that’s quite a power. It’s called DECOMPOSITION. You know, when a body begins to ROT. Jesus. Abortion is COMPLETELY different than a child killed by an accidental gas leakage. Abortion is BEFORE THE CHILD IS FORMED, not 4 years old with memories and emotions. Abortion is also generally when the people can’t take care of it, or when they’re raped, I mean some people do it for stupid reasons and unqualified reasons btu that doesn’t make it okay. A lot of people are NOT okay with that, so why would you think that just because people have abortions that automatically that must mean everyone thinks it’s okay so therefore seeing a child that was killed by toxic gas buried in the ground just a regular every day photograph?

    SERIOUSLY?!?!
People like you make me lose all hope for humanity!

  63. SiV Says:

There is no hope for humanity. Only outside humanity.

This just proves humanities evilness. Abortion, famine, murder, war - it all is death to the undeserving.

  64. barbie Says:

oh get off your high horse, you sound to me like you had an abortion yourself, and hate yourself for it. Still feel guilty dont ya? try condoms instead of abortion as your chief form of birth control and you wont have to murder any more of your babies. get over it and stick to what you know. Anyone can look at this foto and see its a hoax, look at those eyes, a real baby would blink.

  65. lol Says:

yup, its obviously a fake. if anyone puts their hand that close to my eyes, i’m swatting it away. i say we nuke that site, just to be safe.

  68. Dick. Says:

On the contrary “barbie” a doll would blink when it was laid down like that, a dead baby will not. It’s the way they make ‘em, to be lifelike. You are not funny. Your attitudes, whether real or manufactured for the sake of creating some kind of controversy pollute the intertubes.

Or am I being unjust and your pollution was merely some kind of ironic juxtaposition to comment on the awfulness of a life snatched away by the combined actions of corporate vampires and government ghouls?

    Nah, I didn’t think so.

  69. sheyda Says:

    its….awful!

anyone else who is so insensitive with their comments, think about if you had a child and they end up dead like this one. honestly think about it, would you want to go on the internet and find comments like the ones you left? you sicken me.

  80. Anon Says:

God, America causes so much shit. All of the worst disasters in the world are almost always America’s fault.

  81. Reason for Skepticism Says:

I believe that this is a real child, but there’s reason to be skeptical. Last year when Israel invaded Lebanon in retaliation for Hezbollah kidnapping 2 soldiers, the papers and internet were filled with photos of the devastation coming from Israeli rockets. Then some blogger noticed what the NYTimes and others had not. Many of the photos had been photoshopped, others had been staged. One of my favorites was the series of photos showing rescuers searching through rubble and then finding a “victim” who coincidentally looked and dressed identical to one of the searches in the earlier photos. Remember that the news bureaus use stringers and freelancers from the region, many of whom have an axe to grind and bias even stronger than the media’s. They stage photos and the world trusts them.

Come on “real poopoo” people, the holocaust did happen.. You idiots. And yeah shame on America, but honestly, shame on America for producing and raising people such as “barbie”. FYI, humans, and other species, do in fact decompose. So maybe “barbie” needs to adjust her vision from playing with herself, and other dolls all day and learn that there is a difference between dolls and children. Lets not have history repeat itself, and stop being god damn ignorant.
