What is really sad is that the buck stopped there. Doesn’t anyone recall the Milgram experiments? Most people can be convinced to commit atrocities like this with the appropriate authority structure. We are really quite submissive beings for the most part, and can rationalize almost anything in the right circumstances.
Thats why, when authoritarian structures, like the military force, are constructed, the higher ups are supposed to be responsible for their subordinates. Partially this is to be sure the subordinates are watched, but also to prevent exactly this sort of depravity from being rationalized to begin with.
The problem was systemic, and it recieved a topical treatment. As an American, I found this to be a true embarrassment.
Still not seeing the torture eh? How about a man being hooked up to electricity in the first photo. The second one the man is covered in ice which probably resulted in frostbite. Third photo is more mental torture although I would imagine that at some point the dog was released on him for a bit, but that’s just speculation. And the fourth one is absolutely disgusting and degrading. He’s naked, probably beaten and lying on the floor while a soldier poses for a picture holding the leash he is attached to. If this isn’t torture I don’t know what is.
@ steve
You have the right idea, but Zimbardo did the experiments involving roles of prisoners and guards. Milgram’s studies had more to do with diffusion of responsibility. Both scientists’ studies are very interesting and more people should be aware of them.
We’re supposed to care because images like this expose our abject hypocrisy, McCain, because images like this show that we don’t give a damn about spreading ‘civilization’ or ‘democracy’ or whatever the f*ck we state our foreign policy objectives are.
The acts of these ’soldiers’ were disgusting and disgraceful, but be careful not to associate all of us (American soldiers) with the acts of a few disturbed cowards or assume that this reflects on our mentality as a whole. Even the greatest nation on Earth has scumbags. Hard to believe, I know, but true.
Are we any worse than the people we are fighting?
We do this to a person, and yet the “enemy” is cutting off people’s heads with a hacksaw, and mailing a tape of it to their family.
Honestly, we’re all the same.
Every country on Earth is committing atrocities, and no one has said anything about it until the “Good Ol’ USA” does the same thing about the rest of the world.
I think the use of torture is acceptable as a last resort when the lives of many are at stake. If it comes down to the safety of my family or friends I’ll waterboard them myself!
But this act was horrendous. This abuse is NOT tolerated in America. And it was shameful to our nation, but I’m grateful it was brought to public attention.
And I think you missed Silus’s point, RT. By a lot.
The Milgram Experiment and Standford Prison Experiment are great studies in terms of showing what people become capable of when they are given power, and what we do when told something by a superior. They do not justify what the soldiers have done at all, but until you are in the place of those soldiers, and have walked in their shoes you should not pass judgement on them, because you very well could be the same way in those circumstances. You can go to pretty much any place in the world and see some form of torture, doesn’t make it right, but you can’t just get upset at the ones you see photos of- the people that do worse tend to not be dumb enough to let others tape it and send it around the world.
#13 Cynthia
what is a last resort? a “terrorist” has planted a bomb and only he knows, so you torture the information out of him? a) information obtained through torture is unreliable b) why stop with the terrorist? torture his kids, his wife, his parents, anyone associated with him.
ur logic is flawed
shut up with your “oh your hurting the prisoner”. please you all should know that war is hard plain and simple. Grow up already. Just like most of the dem’s. Grow up already. USA is the greatest because it gives freedom and freedom comes with COST.
Oy vey.. The internet enlightens me to just how many people out there from all over are still so ******* prejudice.. So and so, hates a whole country because of actions of someone from there… If you’re going to generalize everyone that lives in a country.. be sure to know everyone in that country first, otherwise you’re just a dumb ***. If you’re going to follow such prejudice.. then sorry, you can’t like anyone, because every country in the world has had horrible people.
It may cheer you up to know the history of the woman in the second picture. It’s too long to go over right now, and I’m sure google can find it if you’re really interested, but the long and the short of it is this:
She was one of several soldiers who were assigned cleanup duty after an Iraqi prisoner was accidentally killed by a pair of interrogators who had been flown in to practice “enhanced interrogation techniques.” She and her comrades suspected that the Iraqi man had, in fact, been killed by illegal torture. They took pictures to document the evidence before the body was disposed of (other images not shown here focus on the wounds inflicted on the man before his death). To avoid arousing suspicion they posed with the corpse, grinning, as though they were just viciously delighted with the situation and wanted to record their participation.
Of course, when the photos leaked, Washington chanted “a few bad apples” and the people who were actually trying to do something good were lumped in with the Lynndie Englands (4th photo down) who were only to happy to join in with the “pre-interrogation” “hazing.”
Then again, maybe the people who actually were torturing detainees weren’t happy about it at all. Maybe some of them were profoundly disturbed, but got used to it. Maybe the majority were just waiting for someone to speak out against it but were themselves too frightened and fatigued to object. Maybe they really were just nasty people, bad apples before the ever even joined the military. Probably some of both. I don’t ******* know.
(Maybe they had orders from superior officers to do what they were doing–part of a systemic and quiet embrace of torture across all levels of command. But if that were the case, surely people would be more upset about it. Right?)
Your comment implies that because the “other side” does does brutal things, it’s only fair that we get to do them too. After all, they do it, why can’t we do it back?
In other words, you expect us to be no better than people who will kidnap civilians, even children, slowly saw their heads off with a knife, videotape it, and release it to the world on the internet.
You are part of the problem. **** you. I can’t say it forcefully enough.
Ronald, the equally horrendous photos you ask for do not exist… you see, Ronald, The US attacked Iraq, the US (rather systematically) imprisoned, and tortured Iraqis… The US didn’t even have a plausible excuse (which is why so many enlightened geniuses like Tor get to post with impunity)… but grim photos from the other side of the coin do exist and were widely published (private “contractors” being dragged around an Iraqi city or beheaded online) these ones are a bit more chilling due to the reversal they caused, generally speaking, to the goodwill the US felt throughout much of the world for the last 50 years. But maybe you don’t remember that time…. I know it’s faded for me a bit.
Let me re-phrase, both sides of the coin are very grim (and tragic), but do to our previous standing etc. etc. etc….. this is why these were picked for this particular website.
let me re-phrase again, by “these photos” I mean the ones on this site, not the ones specified in the parenthesis. and I may as well supplement chilling with “powerful.”
# brinnnn Says: aka oxyMORON!
‘USA is the greatest because it gives freedom and freedom comes with COST.’ — haha best quote on here! are you really tell me that the above picture symbolise freedom?
‘go to work
go to school
follow fashion
watch tv
obey the law
it is world’s shame
it is our shame
we could be as like them
everything is not money Go america go your town leave them alone!
You didn’t give them freedom or agriculture you give them only sadness and unhappiness
What happens to dissidents in China? Or happened to them in pre-invasion Iraq? Or still happens in other parts of the world? They’re killed, tortured, or required to witness their family members being killed or tortured. What happens to Americans? Nothing. We’re allowed to say, worship, read, and watch whatever we choose. Not so much in other places.
@Sian:
Are you saying that making a living presents a lack of freedom? At least we’re not told what job we’re going to have. We can choose where we want to work. Not everyone follows fashion nor are we the fashion capital of the world. I also suppose you’re implying that no other country in the world watches TV. That’s news to me.
Like other’s have said, let’s not generalize. I don’t torture people or advocate it. But you don’t like me because I’m American. Oh shit everyone run! An American! We’ll be infected with his stupidity. Don’t lump informed humans with the idiots that end up on TV or in office. Thank you very much
How can you say you enjoy American freedom when the cost is what you see on these photos? That’s just not right, man.
I’m not at all in a position to judge or generalize the americans, but you don’t show a pretty good example when you post statements like that on the internet, for the rest of the world to see, do you?
And if you were enlightened enough you would know that the average American actually isn’t that free compared to other countries in the world - and that’s a fact.
So enjoy your “freedom” while you are thinking of the thousands of women and children suffering in Iraq and Afghanicstan, because of a war that should have been stopped a long time ago!
ok ok ok, i will start by saying that this was a very disgusting thing to do, it was disgraceful to all of you american citizens, let me ask you a question tho, did you ever think that these soldiers might be ******* with the people that just killed their best friend the day before? I agree that it was wrong and that it was a sick thing to do, but what would you do to the man that you arrested after watching him shoot your best friend dead not 2 minutes earlier, all of you people are bitching about the military and america, and everbody is so caught up in the politics of this war that people forget to realize that there are 17,18,19,20 year old kids like me out there on the front lines because we have to, **** the news they overexaggerate everything and you all eat it up day after day, i see it like this, either grab a gun and change something or just shut your ******* mouths because you can’t tell me the shit that you will do in a warzone while your sitting on your *** drinking coffee and reading the media bullshit
Your think this is sick? How about an Islamic Terrorist cutting off an American reporter’s head with a dull knife? **** you saying America is sick. This is nothing compared to what other countries do to POW’s. These pictures were ******* hilarious and those terriorist deserve every bit of humiliation and “”torture”"..
@Steve:
It has been settled that, yes, human beings are capable of such things.
However, those studies are no justification. If we use the yardstick applied to Nazi soldiers at the end of of WWII then these soldiers should have simply refused to obey an order. The result of the Nuremberg trial was the assertion that a soldier has the moral duty to refuse an immoral order. This was the standard held up by the allies, so it stands to reason that they should apply it to later situations.
Then the only conclusion is that these soldiers, knowing the fact that they should disobey immoral orders, chose to follow those orders of their own accord.
Those ******* towel heads… where is your “Ala akbar” now?? ******* muslims, they only call it outrageous when something is done to them. What did they have to say when september 11 or the massacre at the beslan school… **** you Bush, you should have the balls to NUKE THEM ALL!
WHY ? why they did it ? and why they are smilling and happy ?! I can’t understand .. it makes me angry .. thats why I want to truely believe in hell and heaven , so people like this get punished
Some of the comments on here, eg the ones above mine are truely sick and make me ashamed to be part of the human race.
USA is the greatest because it gives freedom and
freedom comes with COST. - When did people decide that America was the greatest? I doubt this very much. America gives freedom? It doesn’t have freedom, I study politics therefore I know.
Not only this, America does far worse in Guantanamo Bay. Stop pretending to be the greatest country, no one else likes you. You have alienated most of the world.
This war in Iraq was a LIE! George Bush and his team of LIARS openly DECEIVED the United States and it’s only ally- UK to go to war because George wanted to.
And then to see these pictures come out from there? It’s disgusting. These may be a select few people but it still hurts to know that there are these people breathing our precious air.
An interesting fact I came across is that (according to the photographer), the first photo was staged, the wires weren’t live, and the prisoner knew it. I don’t remember the source, and I don’t even know if it’s true, but it’s interesting nonetheless, methinks.
Are we any worse than the people we are fighting?
We do this to a person, and yet the “enemy” is cutting off people’s heads with a hacksaw, and mailing a tape of it to their family.”
that all happened after USA wrongfuly and delibratly accused iraq of having weapons of mass distruction.
which was all a big plot to get their hands on the oil.
the USA was never occupied by Iraq, and was never
any threat to the USA’s security.
all what bothered the US was its money and wealth.
they want to get their hands on arabic oil and they dont mind occupying, killing, bombing and framing any arab country to do so.
i dont know what you would call it. but taking what does not belong to you by force is called terror & robbery.
id like to see how you would react if someone did the same to you in the USA.
im sure someone will come out and say 9/11.
the only country that benefits from 9/11 is the USA
cause it gave the USA the green light to do whatever the hell they want to any country in the world under the umbrella of ” THE WAR ON TERROR”
An interesting fact I came across is that (according to the photographer), the first photo was staged, the wires weren’t live, and the prisoner knew it. I don’t remember the source, and I don’t even know if it’s true, but it’s interesting nonetheless, methinks.”
the only mistake made was in allowing photographs to be taken in the first place!
i vote iraq and france for the 51st and 52nd states respectively! and then maybe iran as the 53rd i quess.
Might be everything goes on the brains of what one thinks…but this might be a nightmare for a single clean man to be in that prison and think of why he was born as a man….
my view kill the killers let the normals live (what u think)
me personally don’t like americans(just like the whole rest of the world). and by seeing the pictures i remember why. They only think about consuming end being completely egoistic with no moral for any ethical values.
It is interesting that so many comments are that people hate Americans. Do you know every single American? Do you think that every single American approves of this war brought on by the people in charge? I am sure there are plenty of Americans who are good people just like the good people in all the other countries of the World who work hard and provide for their families. Media propaganda owned by the governments always makes America the bad guys, but is it all of America and all Americans or is it the small percentage that is photographed and touted on the internet and news media? There are evil people all over the world and it is hush hush when other countries do it. As soon as there is an American involved it suddenly is a huge issue. Think beyond what the media has told you, do not hate for hate sake. Be an individual and see that what is posted here may just be the one bad apple that has ruined the barrel for what could be normal people just like you.
Well America is the Last Super Power so they are expected i na sub conscious way to be perfect.I’m american I’m expected to be above avergae. Asl othere are tons of pictures taken each day/this small percentage is evener smaller compared to all the photos people go through to delibertaley put this on. I’m sorry my brain is fryed currently I’ve been reading all the comments and my ADD is acting up. I applaud the last comment even though frankly I think comments are bad because they never seem nice. But any way i’m trying to be nice and I hope the next comment will be nice too.
yea sure. terrorists blow up a few of our buildings, kill thousands of our people, but we embarass a few (maybe even killing less than 10) and we are the bad people.
the americans in this photo did NOTHING wrong. absolutly nothing wrong.
let me tell you something about soldiers. If a person is intelligent, he will do anything possible to avoid becoming a soldier or going to war. if not, he will try to avoid violence whatsoever. who do you think ends up in the army? letalone the mindnumbingly stupid patriots ‘I’m here to serve my countrY” evolutionary leftovers that willingly enroll. YOU CAN’T FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. YOU ONLY GET MORE FIRE!
Bob was a big hit at the annual Christmas masquerade party with his tree imitation, Sally caught Jack Frost (thats Bill from down in accounting), Terence from HR weaseled a few extra presents from Santa (hats off to our new operating CEO Jim Sanders for the non-traditional Santa costume, he’ll be bringing his new ideas to increase corporate name recognition to the board room this year!) and of course little Liz from the secretarial pool got drunk again and found a new way to hang ornaments…
how a mankind can behave others like these?! are these human or just their shapes are like human?!!
now america claim that the middle esat nations specially Iranians are terrorists or they are supporting terrorism ,but with all these obvious evidences of violence , how they can still talk about human rights or peace?????!!!
Jess, who is to say what their response is? I can imagine some of them would be interested in getting away from the place where the torture took place and forget it and try to live a normal life, if possible, again.
Assuming knowledge of how other beings’ behaviour is, and expecting other people to be vengeful in their behaviour, most of all illustrates your world view and how you’d respond. But implicitly assuming that others would do the same need not be true.
I like to believe I could never hurt other people like that, even though I’ve experienced my shared of bad stuff in my life.
AMERICA = Continent… You “americans” know that?. right???,. or are you geographical impaired? I mean, it doesn’t take ******* Colombo to show you where AMERICA is and the fact that U.S.A. is ON America, just as Canada, México, Honduras, and so on…
The only thing tragic about this photo group, is that dog didn’t tear that hajj’s throat out. The only thing these monkeys understand is barbarism. They’ve been butchering each other for thousands of years and will continue to do so. Any argument to the contrary is ignorant and unfounded. Read the Koran. I’ll guarentee not ONE person boo-hoo’ing about this shit has read it or has any inkling of war/life in the middle east since the dawn of time. If you did, you’d not be bitching. I wish we’d treat all these ******** just the same. Open up a hundret Gitmo’s, drench the fuckers in pigs blood and force feed them bacon. High fives to every soldier at Abu Gharib for this. They deserved much worse. Using kids to blow up market places and kill 100 civilians to get 2 soldiers….hmmm…that sounds like the actions of a religion doing it’s best for “Allah” doesn’t it? **** ‘em, feed ‘em pig heads. All the middle east is, as it always has been, is a breeding ground for murderers and charity cases. Let’s get out of there and let them go back to blowing each other up in the name of tribal boundaries and their false God.
Though it’s not agreeable with what they’ve done and I never agree with anything America does, as a Canadian as our laws are much different, and I have to say the idiot who labeled Canada part of North America needs to go to hell, I’m sorry, Canada has no relation to the ignorance of American’s and their Military, but stuff like this happens all the time in war, The leaders are people like us that have to make decisions based on what the probable outcome will be.
I agree theres always a few bad apples that spoil the bunch, if you want us to agree “Yeah, we are in North America” or agree to enjoy being partners with them, they need to show better examples of themselves, Not only are a majority of American’s arrogant, they pretend like their way s always better- It isn’t it never will be.
To every single one of you who think they are so much better than Americans. I pitty you. You will most likely never be subjected to the mental strain that these young people were going through. You’ll probably never have the pleasure of being shot at, hated in your own country, hated in every other country, criticized around every corner, and generally disliked almost everywhere you go. I pitty the fact that, no matter what is going on in the world, you all seem to find some way to blame the “evil Americans” for all the worlds problems. That you chose to ignor the fact that these ******** were part of the vast minority of our troops, and that they were dealt with accordingly in a court of law, tells me you all deserve great pitty. None of you choose to actually do anything about the woes of the world… You just sit back and watch it in High-def., and then ***** and complain when things don’t go the way you think they should. Bravo, World.
flfisher: the media comes out in a bad way portraiting america, the election and all kinds of stuffed connected with america(ns). all that god bless mentality and your dobbelmorals are so obviously disgusting.
i think much of the hate lies there. sorry to say that whats shown abroad your country comes out all “directed and produced” in other cultures eyes. what the states has as culture? skyscrapers? that last one was a joke. have to warn so no one out there gets triggered
To the guy who said the second guy is covered in ice… thats because he is dead. Dead guy + desert heat - a/c = SMELL. You can’t torture a dead guy. dumbass.
the firs photo…KKK…
the second.. oh my…whats the chick have in your brains.,..
the third.. another nobrainswoman take your pet to pee…
thats horrible…
such love in their hearts..such love…
thats sad..
First: These are photos of repulsive behavior and it sickens me.
Second: Lets clarify the photos here. The man on the box is led to believe he is hooked up to electricity but isn’t actually electrocuted. The ice is there because the man is dead; it’s horrific because she enjoys that. The other two? Well, I guess things done in fraternities, football field houses, band camp, military brotherhood ceremonies (submariners do worse during ceremonies to cross the equator or the prime meridian), etc…are all torture. Hey, doesn’t justify it at all, but you know what the golden rule is. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you…preferably BEFORE they do unto you.
For the record, I dont condone this, but I have experienced it. Man it sucked. I hope I am not forced to get naked and be humiliated again, wait….I have to shower in open bay showers with a bunch of infantile idiots who snap my *** with towels and punch me in the nuts. Guess it’s not in the cards for me then.
No matter which way you see it, when you are involved in a war situation then intelligence gathering comes in many ways.
You can get a prisoner who is not in uniform, and who cannot be considered eligible for the rules of the Geneva convention to apply, to give you the information you require by politely asking for it or simply by threatening dire consequences for refusal to divulge.
The fact that the prisoner is a terrorists and so commits unspeakable acts against your fellow soldiers puts him/her into a completely different category.
Merely constantly pushing a needle beneath the finger nails of each finger to get the prisoner to speak is probably quite painfull, but with training and courage there are some recruits that either don’t have any information or just can’t feel the pain.
Where do you draw the line? Do you go for broke and end up with a bloody mess? Not very scientific when there are a whole lot of torture methods that since the beginning of time have been designed to make a person suffer form verbal diarrhea and still leave a whole body to face the final executioners axe.
The point as to whether or not the US of A should be in Iraq is irrelevent, especially when someone with a high powered weapon has taken offence to you and in the process has killed a number of your comrades and other innocent people.
The other point is what does it profit a man/woman to gain martydom when the cause they are fighting for is so obscure.
Torture methods will ALWAYS reveal the required intelligence, provided there is some information to be gathered, otherwise the torturer is just being sadisitic for personal satisfaction.
The last point is, don’t get caught bending the rules in interrogation otherwise it could be embarrasing when the details leak out.
Handlewanker: “You can get a prisoner who is not in uniform, and who cannot be considered eligible for the rules of the Geneva convention to apply, to give you the information you require by politely asking for it or simply by threatening dire consequences for refusal to divulge.”
I am sorry, but that is the worst political stunt in a very long time. Blatantly evading the Geneva convention with the term illegal combatants, despite the fact that the Geneva convention has functioned well for so long, shows complete disrespect for people and historical ignorance. What you basically are saying is that Guantanamo is needed.
When CIA capture people and fly them to countries in which torture can take place without less intervention, while also signing deals with Britain and other countries about extradition of foreign citizens to the US for trial - while refusing to sign the international crime court so that no US citizen can be the same for crimes done elsewhere, and, while creating laws that govern illegal actions done abroad (i.e. if I as a European, and if I lived in Britain, and I did something that was legal in Britain but not in the US, the US could have be extradited to the US because have laws that cover foreigner’s actions performed in their own home countries - then our world is fucked. The last 10 years the US has transported their own paranoia, fear, and “patriotism” to the rest of the world. So sad.
Let us reverse it. Say EU has rules where your actions performed in the US could be illegal here, and you would be extradited for that to be in prison here - you’d feel your national sovereign rights were violated, right? But, apparently the US has the “right” to violate the rest of the world, because.. what, to fight terror? Well, my nation’s people are dying in IRAQ with the US troops as well, but OUR people are also prone to be shipped abroad to the US for trial? I am sick of it.
oh, and btw, what I meant is that my nations troops were shipped to IRAQ to fight alongside the US, yet our people back here are shipped to the US for trials. Sick!
Tor, you’re doing it wrong! I realize you are doing this to be a troll/somewhat funny, but it would have been PERFECT if you didn’t say ANYTHING for this picture and ONLY this picture. Why? Because this is the only picture out of this entire album that shows Americans being racist ignorant ******** that you accuse them of being in every picture, regardless of the pictures being of Americans at all.
The acts of these ’soldiers’ were disgusting and disgraceful, but be careful not to associate all of us (American soldiers) with the acts of a few disturbed cowards or assume that this reflects on our mentality as a whole. Even the greatest nation on Earth has scumbags. Hard to believe, I know, but true
WTFE! but be careful! whats that a threat! i dont assume anything! and it does reflect on your mentality as a whole bunch of narrow minded sheep! cause its your choice as an individual or a whole to prove otherwise! The greatest nation on earth! Says who? YOU! WTFE! I was born and raised in America and maybe at one time this was a nation with the best intensions but now its all about LIES GREED and not to forget mentioning just about everything is illegal in some way or another! This nation has fallen from grace along time ago! If there was another revolution i’d be on the front line day one against the present America Id rather die for something then live for nothing! So take your brainwashed comments and shove up your im a soilder dumbass!!!!
@Mike,
you are full of crap. America is the greatest country the world has ever known! You are lucky we allowed euro-trash like you to come here and be educated, thats right, all of you suck up tp us , take advantage of our largesse and generosity, and then stab us in the back, typical low life ********, thats what you are, ******** with no appreciation, you dirty little….oooops, gotta run
Remember -WE PROSECUTED these people for doing what these pictures portray! We hold our people accountable.
This is an example of failed leadership from the team and squad level all the way to their commander. The General in charge of the prison has lost her career. Some of these soldiers are in jail still. This is a textbook example of what happens when bad units are deployed to a combat zone. This unit lost all discipline and structure. That’s why the ***** England got pregnant by one of her NCOs. A colossal leadership failure and a disgrace to the American uniform.
For the Argentenian who is all spun up about people referring to the States as “America”: That’s the way Europeans have referred to us since our birth as a nation. For the record -America is not a continent. NORTH AMERICA and SOUTH AMERICA are seperate continents. Geography class is over.
yes we did by golly, they got off too, or were barely punished. The guy who executed the prisoners just got off the other day too— with one hand we say, look, we arrested them, with the other hand we say, look, we’ll let you go….
Dennis(dutch): I assume you are Dutch. I find it funny because I am sure you didnt hate Americans when we were kicking the ******* Germans out of your country. Or Brits who hate Americans, forgetting we gave them supplies in WWI and basically gave them Battleships for free in WWII. Its a shame that the new generation forgets what America did and still does for the world. When I was in the Navy 20 years ago I was treated like royalty in the Phillipines and Australia because the remembered how we saved both places from being taken over by the ****. **** you guys who are ungrateful. They negative actions of few apparently reverse great actions of many. How about the millions of money from taxpayers that goes to aide 3rd world countries? Oh wait, I suppose that’s our fault too somehow. Here is an idea, if you dont want to be tortured, DONT BE A TOWELHEAD! Then there isnt a risk. Nuke the ********, that’s what I say. The whole region is the armpit of the world and the quicker people realize that the better.
Look fellas and other types, if you really want to know what the bad boys/girls did just try asking them in the politest way and they will tell you in the politest way to go and get f………, being a gentlman I desist from using foul language, but you you really have to come into the real world when it’s the truth you are after.
In the middle ages, when the chips were down, they really knew how to get the other guys to spill the beans.
Let’s be cool, supposing someone kidnapped your 3 year old child for ransom and even though you caught the mother f………, oops almost slipped, they wouldn’t tell you where the child was, what do you do?
Supposing there was a time problem in that your child after 3 days would probably be deceased from whatever conditions it was kept under.
I think there are a lot of ways to get someone to speak frankly and clearly without leaving a mark on them, or even harming them.
Psychology is the best form of torture, whereby you get into the other persons skull and make them feel the pain without actually applying it.
Of course if you are a redneck mayhem merchant then the first course of action is to beat the living hell out of the patient and so render them incapable of even grunting a reply to your questions.
Torture is and will always be a method that is tried and trusted by all authorities around the world, but wtf, if the other guy won’t come to the party, make him/her, the consequences are not your problem.
There is a case to be made for someone who is innocent, but usually a prima face case is established before more brutal means are applied, in any event if the person is guilty, who really cares if their civil rights are ignored to some degree or other. The end will always justify the means, trust me.
Abu Graib=Total failure of leadership/supervison. Prisoners were treated badly. Prisoners are always treated badly. If photos of Turkish prison guards beating Kurdish terrorists to death were shown on CNN everyone would just shake their head and say “what a shame.”
War is not a game, quit treating it as such with political rules and regulations. anything goes in love and war.
research “total war” an American tradition created by an American founder George Washington
war should be the last resort, but if it happens it should not be a ******* game. let the soliders do what they must to finish it as quickly as possible.
If that is torture, then what is it when you starve people in a cage, or pull off their fingernails, or cut off fingers joint by joint, or cut their heads off, or drag their beaten bodies through the streets as they die, or shove sharpened broom handles up their privates and impale them to death, or electrocute them, or shave layers of skin off, or gouge their eyes out, or castrate them and let them bleed to death?
Those are all common in the Middle East or Asia.
Scaring people or making them uncomfortable is torture? Please…
The US can keep their so called “freedom”. Most of the US citizens were in favor of this war from the beginning. Even though there were demonstrations all over the world against it, even though there weren’t any weapons of mass destruction, even though the UN had not approved it. You went on with it anyway. You don’t like it so much now not because of the torture, or the hundreds of thousands innocent dead. It’s because of your unhappy pockets and your “good boys” (like the ones on the photos) coming home dead or maimed.
I’m not saying that all americans are evil or anything, you’re just as average as the rest of us almost-human-foreigners, you just have more power and money. The rest of the world doesn’t hate you because of Iraq only, you should read about all of the other “freedom deeds” your country has done in central and south america in the past centuries.
Don’t get me wrong, i don’t hate americans, that’s unwise and narrow minded. You’re just playing your role in history. As an economic and cultural power you have also given the world great works of art and science. You just have to keep you freedom to yourselves, let the rest of the nations follow their own fate.
There was a military government in my country, there was systematic torture and thirty thousand people died. But the thing is we did it within our country’s geographical limits and to ourselves! That’s what you should do, keep the bombing and the torture to yourselves and the rest of the world will be cool about it. Just a thought.
in response to number 10:
you’re right, the greatest nation on earth wouldn’t torture people. but people within the greatest nation on earth WOULD.
in being the greatest nation on earth, don’t you think it would be a free country? with laws and regulations, of course… but if it was a free country, and some rotten egg grew up there and was a legal citizen, do you think the greatest country on earth would deport its own citizens for doing bad things? prooooobably not. so that rotten egg could live there all his/her life and do torturous things like we see here.
for whatever reason, some (many) of the people who have replied to this act like the entirety of the american population did this. like all 300 million of us were witnesses to these acts and then put in our own two cents of beating on each of these men being tortured.
i don’t know if you’re aware of this, but that didn’t happen.
and thank you to all the people who assume all americans are bad because of the choices of some of our people. it’s really admirable that you make the choice to lump 300 million people together and then insult them all at once.
that was sarcasm, yes.
i just wanted to say i’m an american and i distance myself from these acts. what kills so many is that many are guilty by association. i will not accept this. these soldiers are not a representation of me, other americans or my family. they’ve disgraced themselves.
somebody said :”USA is the greatest because it gives freedom and freedom comes with COST.”
isn’t it a joke! are you kidding us?
great joke
Freedom ,where it is ,in US
Maybe you mean liberty statue!
Yes you are right is in the US.
But how about reality do we have?
Is it possible !?
what kind of freedom you are speaking?
Wake up man
What an expensive cost for having such freedeom
Please keep in yourself don’t give to the other nations.
As an American I am ashamed everytime I see this photo.
Not because of the image, but because of the coward that took it to the press.
War is terrible. Once war begins, no matter what the cause, the objective to to save american lives. PERIOD.
I did not and do not bleed for any one who can support the acts of such a cowardly act as the terroist may commit. I have donemy part, and I would gladly kill thousands more or torture any of my enemy if it saves one American soldier or one American citizen, let alone 3000 +.
When the whole world claims for peace this is what americans do with the world.
They use the flag of democracy to kill childrens, women, fathers, just for oil and their politicans.
There is no wonder why the whole world hates these guys.
There is no wonder why a monster like Osama arises.
and there is no wonder if more like them arise.
every country has evil. yes, these soldiers were being hateful, but imagine the shit they have seen over there. every war is filled with hate and torture, this war is different only because we have such a wide media. Internet makes it so easy to see things that only soldiers have to deal with. Right now you see the brutality of it, but you are not seeing the whole picture. So if you want to judge America sign up for the ******* war and see for yourself that there is no peace and respect when it comes to fighting for your country.
Oh man, these soldiers are just so sick… I mean I’m sure if the tables were turned, and it was the americans that were prisoners, they’d be getting lobster thermidor and back rubs…. No, they’d be getting raped, beaten, and then their heads cut off and the video tapes sent to Al-Jazeera. You liberal sissies need to stop crying for the enemy, and move to Iraq where people still won’t like you.

August 26th, 2008 at 9:18 am
these pictures are truly sickening…America refers to the middle east as backwards and barbaric yet look what American soldiers are capable of doing
August 26th, 2008 at 10:08 am

August 26th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Um… still not seeing the torture.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Still not seeing the torture eh? How about a man being hooked up to electricity in the first photo. The second one the man is covered in ice which probably resulted in frostbite. Third photo is more mental torture although I would imagine that at some point the dog was released on him for a bit, but that’s just speculation. And the fourth one is absolutely disgusting and degrading. He’s naked, probably beaten and lying on the floor while a soldier poses for a picture holding the leash he is attached to. If this isn’t torture I don’t know what is.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
@ steve
You have the right idea, but Zimbardo did the experiments involving roles of prisoners and guards. Milgram’s studies had more to do with diffusion of responsibility. Both scientists’ studies are very interesting and more people should be aware of them.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Who cares?
August 26th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
We’re supposed to care because images like this expose our abject hypocrisy, McCain, because images like this show that we don’t give a damn about spreading ‘civilization’ or ‘democracy’ or whatever the f*ck we state our foreign policy objectives are.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
The acts of these ’soldiers’ were disgusting and disgraceful, but be careful not to associate all of us (American soldiers) with the acts of a few disturbed cowards or assume that this reflects on our mentality as a whole. Even the greatest nation on Earth has scumbags. Hard to believe, I know, but true.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Sorry Silus but ‘the greatest nation on earth’ wouldn’t torture people.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
sorry rt, but there isn’t a nation-state that has ever existed that did not use some form of torture.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Here’s a question for you all:
Are we any worse than the people we are fighting?
We do this to a person, and yet the “enemy” is cutting off people’s heads with a hacksaw, and mailing a tape of it to their family.
Honestly, we’re all the same.
Every country on Earth is committing atrocities, and no one has said anything about it until the “Good Ol’ USA” does the same thing about the rest of the world.
Just my $.02
August 26th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I think the use of torture is acceptable as a last resort when the lives of many are at stake. If it comes down to the safety of my family or friends I’ll waterboard them myself!
But this act was horrendous. This abuse is NOT tolerated in America. And it was shameful to our nation, but I’m grateful it was brought to public attention.
And I think you missed Silus’s point, RT. By a lot.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
The Milgram Experiment and Standford Prison Experiment are great studies in terms of showing what people become capable of when they are given power, and what we do when told something by a superior. They do not justify what the soldiers have done at all, but until you are in the place of those soldiers, and have walked in their shoes you should not pass judgement on them, because you very well could be the same way in those circumstances. You can go to pretty much any place in the world and see some form of torture, doesn’t make it right, but you can’t just get upset at the ones you see photos of- the people that do worse tend to not be dumb enough to let others tape it and send it around the world.

what is a last resort? a “terrorist” has planted a bomb and only he knows, so you torture the information out of him? a) information obtained through torture is unreliable b) why stop with the terrorist? torture his kids, his wife, his parents, anyone associated with him.
ur logic is flawed
August 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Excuse me. Where are the equally horrendous photos of what American soldiers experienced?
August 27th, 2008 at 1:34 am
@sarahbean
Right?)
August 27th, 2008 at 1:52 am
@Ronald
I’m an American. I assume you are to.
Wait, maybe I can.
****. YOU.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:11 am
August 27th, 2008 at 2:16 am
Let me re-phrase, both sides of the coin are very grim (and tragic), but do to our previous standing etc. etc. etc….. this is why these were picked for this particular website.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:06 am
let me re-phrase again, by “these photos” I mean the ones on this site, not the ones specified in the parenthesis. and I may as well supplement chilling with “powerful.”

When will these ones “change the world”, exactly?
We’re kinda still waiting.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:58 am
On the topic of freedom.
@Sian:
Thank you very much
August 27th, 2008 at 8:58 am
@brinnn
August 27th, 2008 at 9:08 am
this is the end result when you have Donald Rumsfeld as an advisor.
Rumsfeld should be held as a war criminal and be tried accordingly.

ok ok ok, i will start by saying that this was a very disgusting thing to do, it was disgraceful to all of you american citizens, let me ask you a question tho, did you ever think that these soldiers might be ******* with the people that just killed their best friend the day before?
August 27th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
if you were on the front lines, you wouldnt have time to be ******* around on the internet.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Americans truly make me sick. Is this what they call liberating a country?
August 27th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Your think this is sick? How about an Islamic Terrorist cutting off an American reporter’s head with a dull knife? **** you saying America is sick. This is nothing compared to what other countries do to POW’s. These pictures were ******* hilarious and those terriorist deserve every bit of humiliation and “”torture”"..
And im no american.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
The fact that these pictures are not being actively suppressed by the government means that our freedom is definitely NOT fucked.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:14 am
Due process anyone? That’s what sickens me most about these photos, Assumed guilty, no chance to be proven innocent.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:03 am
This is Bush-Cheney show. America is different. trust me on that.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:06 am
@Steve:

These may be a select few people but it still hurts to know that there are these people breathing our precious air.

that all happened after USA wrongfuly and delibratly accused iraq of having weapons of mass distruction.
which was all a big plot to get their hands on the oil.
the USA was never occupied by Iraq, and was never
any threat to the USA’s security.
all what bothered the US was its money and wealth.
they want to get their hands on arabic oil and they dont mind occupying, killing, bombing and framing any arab country to do so.
i dont know what you would call it. but taking what does not belong to you by force is called terror & robbery.
id like to see how you would react if someone did the same to you in the USA.
im sure someone will come out and say 9/11.

September 3rd, 2008 at 6:02 pm
September 3rd, 2008 at 6:32 pm
September 3rd, 2008 at 6:34 pm
September 3rd, 2008 at 6:36 pm
America is a poor example of a true nation, they need to crawl back into whatever hole they came out of and rot there.
September 3rd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
flfisher: the media comes out in a bad way portraiting america, the election and all kinds of stuffed connected with america(ns). all that god bless mentality and your dobbelmorals are so obviously disgusting.
i think much of the hate lies there. sorry to say that whats shown abroad your country comes out all “directed and produced” in other cultures eyes. what the states has as culture? skyscrapers? that last one was a joke. have to warn so no one out there gets triggered

SHAME
September 4th, 2008 at 8:57 am
September 4th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
If you want change….and I mean real change why not take a look at Bob Barr, he understands what needs to be done and has learned from our mistakes.
September 4th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Ive waited all my life for a man like Bob Barr! Is he in one of these photos?
September 4th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Bob is the guy with the friendly dog. The guy wearing the over-alls has a biscuit. The dog must choose which hand it’s in.
September 4th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

September 5th, 2008 at 8:29 am
oh, and btw, what I meant is that my nations troops were shipped to IRAQ to fight alongside the US, yet our people back here are shipped to the US for trials. Sick!
September 5th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Tor, you’re doing it wrong! I realize you are doing this to be a troll/somewhat funny, but it would have been PERFECT if you didn’t say ANYTHING for this picture and ONLY this picture. Why? Because this is the only picture out of this entire album that shows Americans being racist ignorant ******** that you accuse them of being in every picture, regardless of the pictures being of Americans at all.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
this picture seems to show americans being racist ignorant ********….that cant be right!
September 5th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

all of you are sick and live in paradigm.
America is always gonna be attacked and west destroyed if you guys don’t change your self.

Silus Says:
September 6th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
@Mike,
you are full of crap.
September 6th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
its my experience that when shocked they fall off the box….
September 6th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
lol. Arm is cool
September 6th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
September 6th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
yes we did by golly, they got off too, or were barely punished. The guy who executed the prisoners just got off the other day too— with one hand we say, look, we arrested them, with the other hand we say, look, we’ll let you go….
September 6th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

September 7th, 2008 at 12:42 am
Doctors cut, burn, and torture the sick, and then demand of them an undeserved fee for such services.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:09 am
Abu Graib=Total failure of leadership/supervison. Prisoners were treated badly. Prisoners are always treated badly. If photos of Turkish prison guards beating Kurdish terrorists to death were shown on CNN everyone would just shake their head and say “what a shame.”
September 7th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
@and justice for all…yeah, and in the ancient days if a doctor failed to heal the sick, the DOCTOR had to pay!
September 8th, 2008 at 7:42 am
War is not a game, quit treating it as such with political rules and regulations. anything goes in love and war.
research “total war” an American tradition created by an American founder George Washington
war should be the last resort, but if it happens it should not be a ******* game. let the soliders do what they must to finish it as quickly as possible.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:35 am
If that is torture, then what is it when you starve people in a cage, or pull off their fingernails, or cut off fingers joint by joint, or cut their heads off, or drag their beaten bodies through the streets as they die, or shove sharpened broom handles up their privates and impale them to death, or electrocute them, or shave layers of skin off, or gouge their eyes out, or castrate them and let them bleed to death?
Those are all common in the Middle East or Asia.
Scaring people or making them uncomfortable is torture? Please…

September 9th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
September 9th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
in response to number 10:
you’re right, the greatest nation on earth wouldn’t torture people. but people within the greatest nation on earth WOULD.
in being the greatest nation on earth, don’t you think it would be a free country? with laws and regulations, of course… but if it was a free country, and some rotten egg grew up there and was a legal citizen, do you think the greatest country on earth would deport its own citizens for doing bad things? prooooobably not. so that rotten egg could live there all his/her life and do torturous things like we see here.
for whatever reason, some (many) of the people who have replied to this act like the entirety of the american population did this. like all 300 million of us were witnesses to these acts and then put in our own two cents of beating on each of these men being tortured.
i don’t know if you’re aware of this, but that didn’t happen.
and thank you to all the people who assume all americans are bad because of the choices of some of our people. it’s really admirable that you make the choice to lump 300 million people together and then insult them all at once.
that was sarcasm, yes.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
@Central Scrutinizer … Frank Zappa, what kind of a stupid liberal pinko ****** commie *** name is that?
September 9th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

September 10th, 2008 at 10:15 am
i just wanted to say i’m an american and i distance myself from these acts. what kills so many is that many are guilty by association. i will not accept this. these soldiers are not a representation of me, other americans or my family. they’ve disgraced themselves.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:52 am
i completley agree with cody ^^. these arent acts of true americans.
September 11th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

September 15th, 2008 at 8:16 am
As an American I am ashamed everytime I see this photo.
Not because of the image, but because of the coward that took it to the press.
War is terrible. Once war begins, no matter what the cause, the objective to to save american lives. PERIOD.
I did not and do not bleed for any one who can support the acts of such a cowardly act as the terroist may commit. I have donemy part, and I would gladly kill thousands more or torture any of my enemy if it saves one American soldier or one American citizen, let alone 3000 +.
September 16th, 2008 at 9:07 am
When the whole world claims for peace this is what americans do with the world.
They use the flag of democracy to kill childrens, women, fathers, just for oil and their politicans.
There is no wonder why the whole world hates these guys.
There is no wonder why a monster like Osama arises.
and there is no wonder if more like them arise.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
@Lucca,,,, maybe soon one will arise in your country and then we can free you, just be patient.

Most soldiers are low-life dogs, and that’s why they’re soldiers in the first place.
September 25th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
why doesnt someone help these prison guards?
September 25th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
this picture was accidentally mislabeled, it should have read the last jews in bu Ghraib get their comeuppance. Sorry about the mix up folks.
September 27th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
them are some strong boxes they have, ours would collapse!
September 28th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
every country has evil. yes, these soldiers were being hateful, but imagine the shit they have seen over there. every war is filled with hate and torture, this war is different only because we have such a wide media. Internet makes it so easy to see things that only soldiers have to deal with. Right now you see the brutality of it, but you are not seeing the whole picture. So if you want to judge America sign up for the ******* war and see for yourself that there is no peace and respect when it comes to fighting for your country.
September 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Sick sick people. These soldiers are Nazis.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Oh man, these soldiers are just so sick… I mean I’m sure if the tables were turned, and it was the americans that were prisoners, they’d be getting lobster thermidor and back rubs…. No, they’d be getting raped, beaten, and then their heads cut off and the video tapes sent to Al-Jazeera. You liberal sissies need to stop crying for the enemy, and move to Iraq where people still won’t like you.
